And to think some Blogging Tories pooh-poohed me when I predicted this because Derek Burney one of Harpers key post election advisors has been outspoken in his promotion of BMD/US Canadian joint Missle Defense.OTTAWA (CP) - Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor says he's willing to reopen the controversial debate on ballistic missile defence if the United States extends another invitation.
However, the minority Conservative government would eventually put the question before the Commons and since all three opposition parties have opposed the idea in the past, the concept is likely dead before it starts.
"It would really, ultimately, be up to a vote in Parliament," the minister told reporters Thursday.
His comments came as a former Pentagon official was in Toronto urging Canada to spurn missile defence and instead lead an international charge against space weapons.
Phil Coyle, an assistant secretary of defence and senior weapons tester at the U.S. Department of Defence from 1994 to 2001, said missile defence is seductive but unworkable.
"All you get is a scarecrow defence."

Yeah and I guess while he was musing on BMD he forgot this:
ReplyDeleteOur Priorities
Harper says Canadians will choose the composition of the next Parliament. Should Conservatives lead that Parliament, the Conservative Party will pursue the following five priorities:
* Clean up government by passing the Federal Accountability Act;
* Provide real tax relief to working families by cutting the GST;
* Make our streets and communities safer by cracking down on crime;
* Help parents with the cost of raising their children; and
* Work with the provinces to establish a Patient Wait Times Guarantee.
Mr. Harper noted that Paul Martin has labelled almost every issue he confronts as a priority, and as a result he has nothing to show for his two-plus years in office other than plans and meeting minutes.
“The only way to decipher any sort of hierarchy among Paul Martin’s many priorities was to separate those that were very important from those that were very, very important,” said Mr. Harper."
Gee now Stephen Harper is suffering from Martinism he has very very important priorities and very very very important priorities.
I guess BMD is now very very very important unlike Same Sex Marriage which is only very very important.
Both are about free votes in the house.
