Okay, I know what you are getting at, but do you honestly believe that?
ReplyDeleteFor one thing, for a significant proportion of the American electorate (considered in the actual context in which these contests occur in terms of the media and the options on the table) fielding only "white guys in suits" is actually seen as a plus...scary but true.
For another, I think it is not at all accurate to say that "Democrats represent the diversity of America and the rest of the world." I mean, even in that picture, you have five white men in suits, a Black man, and a white woman...in what meaningful sense does this represent even America let alone the rest of the world? And when you get beyond the liberal notions of "diversity" and "inclusion" and "representation" in trying to understand such things and actually look at policy and at historical political practice, it is a no-brainer to see the Dems as just as committed to maintaining social relations of white supremacy, patriarchy, class exploitation, and imperialism around the world as their occasional opponents and oft-time dance partners in the Republican Party.
Not that I am one to ignore the small but real differences between these parties in certain specific areas or to advocate electoral absetntionism or anything as puritanical and disconnected from life on the ground as that, but Democratic "diversity", particularly at the top of the party hierarchy, is mostly about performance rather than substance.
It's all about 'optics'...
