Why is Ukraine’s wheat so important?

His lined face squinting into the wind, Sergey Plaksia trudged through the snow towards the barn where he keeps his golden wheat stocks through the winter.

For the past 30 years, he has farmed the endless fields stretching across this part of Ukraine, expanding his smallholding of 250 acres into more than 6,000 acres managed by 110 employees and producing 2,000 tonnes of wheat a year. Now he is beginning to fear that a Russian invasion — or threat of one — could devastate his life’s work.
