No end in sight for rail strikes, says Mick Whelan

As the latest rail shutdown across England begins, the boss of the train drivers’ union has warned: “This is going to go on until the government give us a solution.”

Aslef, and the larger RMT rail union, are involved in parallel disputes on pay, jobs and working arrangements with the train operating companies (TOCs) that are contracted by the government to run services.

Today marks the 12th strike day by members of Aslef since national rail walk-outs began in the summer of 2022. On Saturday, train drivers will withdraw non-contractual overtime at the same time as up to 20,000 members of the RMT will stop work in their latest national strike.

General Secretary of the RMT union Mick Lynch has told Sky News 50% of the railways are closed down and doesn't "take any pleasure in that".

It comes as 20,000 members of Mr Lynch's union walk out in a dispute over pay, jobs and condition

The General Secretary of the RMT, Mick Lynch has said that the end of the rail strikes is “not in sight,” and that the government holds the key to develop a settlement with the train staff. Members of the RMT at 14 train operating companies launched a 24-hour strike on Saturday in long-running disputes over pay, jobs and conditions. Mick Lynch insisted that the RMT continued to receive support from members of the public.
