Three-in-five Canadians think employers should be allowed to give drug tests to any employee now that marijuana is legal, according to a new poll.

The online survey by Research Co. showed 58% of Canadians think drug tests should “definitely” be allowed. That is down two percentage points from a similar survey in October 2022.

“Support for the legalization of marijuana is highest among Canadians aged 55 and over (66%),” said Mario Canseco, president of Research Co. “The proportions are lower among those aged 35-to-54 (56%) and those aged 18-to-34 (48%).”

Almost 70% of Canadians say the federal government should be providing expungement orders to people convicted of possession of cannabis for personal use with no intent to traffic.

In Canada, an expungement order requires police forces and federal departments to remove any judicial record of a conviction.

Seventy-two per cent of people in Ontario are in favour of pardons for people convicted of possession of cannabis for personal use with no intent to traffic.

Only one-in-eight Canadians believe it is time to legalize other substances, such as ecstasy, cocaine, heroin, and crack. Just over half of Canadians (53%) say they have never consumed pot.

One-third of respondents reported they tried cannabis before legalization in October 2018.

Conducted Oct. 11-13, the online survey of 1,000 Canadian adults is considered accurate within 3.1%, 19 times of out 20.
