UN Official: Gaza’s Rubble from Israeli War May Take 14 Years to Clear

April 29, 2024

A UN official, Pehr Lodhammar from the United Nations Mine Action Service, revealed on Friday that the aftermath of Israel’s devastating war in the Gaza Strip could require approximately 14 years to remove.

Lodhammar disclosed this during a briefing in Geneva, highlighting the staggering scale of destruction that has left an estimated 37 million tons of debris in the densely populated region.

Media reports from Gaza indicate that Israeli airstrikes have decimated around 70,000 homes and severely damaged an additional 290,000 structures, rendering them uninhabitable.

Among the targeted sites are government buildings, hospitals, schools, mosques, churches, and historical landmarks.

In addition to the staggering death toll of over 34,000 Palestinians since October 7, the Israeli genocide has wrought widespread devastation upon the enclave of 2.3 million people.

As a result, vast swathes of the region now lie in ruins, with the majority of civilians left homeless, hungry, and facing heightened risks of disease.
