A NEW campaigning and social organisation has been launched in Britain in the name of Irish revolutionary James Connolly.
The James Connolly League launched in Manchester’s Irish World Heritage Centre over the weekend, with delegates from Ireland, England and Scotland.
Speakers included veteran Irish republican Tommy McKearney, Frankie Quinn of the 1916 Societies and trade union activist Kevan Nelson.
They highlighted the need for a united, sovereign and socialist Ireland and said all the people of Ireland should be included in any future border poll and other decision-making arrangements.
They also looked at wider issues in British and world politics.
Other issues covered included Ireland’s allowing the US military to use Shannon airport and the rise of the far right in Ireland and recent riots in Dublin.
The group said: “There are hopes to form James Connolly League branches in different areas including Leeds, Glasgow and the Midlands.”
It is not thought to be linked to the existing Connolly Association, which organises among Irish communities in Britain and campaigns for Republican principles.
