William F.Buckley 'Get Out Of Iraq Now'

The elder voice of the Conservative right in the United States opines that the U.S. efforts in Iraq have been a colossal failure and the best bet is to get out now.

Bad enough the Prez is facing a united front of Democrats and Republicans over the whole Dubai owns our Ports issue, and united front calling for his impeachment over illegal wiretapping, now Bill Buckley slaps him upside the head over Iraq.

Not a good week for King George II.

IT DIDN'T WORK

By William F. Buckley Jr.Fri Feb 24, 9:05 PM ET

“I can tell you the main reason behind all our woes — it is America.” The New York Times reporter is quoting the complaint of a clothing merchant in a Sunni stronghold in Iraq. “Everything that is going on between Sunnis and Shiites, the troublemaker in the middle is America.”

Mr. Bush has a very difficult internal problem here because to make the kind of concession that is strategically appropriate requires a mitigation of policies he has several times affirmed in high-flown pronouncements. His challenge is to persuade himself that he can submit to a historical reality without forswearing basic commitments in foreign policy.

He will certainly face the current development as military leaders are expected to do: They are called upon to acknowledge a tactical setback, but to insist on the survival of strategic policies.

Yes, but within their own counsels, different plans have to be made. And the kernel here is the acknowledgment of defeat.

A tactical setback would be a typical spin for the Bush media, Fox News et al for the last week in Iraq. I wonder how long it will be before the tame media in America begin to spin the continued collapse in Iraq, not to mention Afghanistan, as a success for US Policy. You can write the script for it: 'not our fault they wouldn't be helped', 'sectarianism undid our good work'. The contribution of US incompetence/brutality will be airbrushed out. 'Mission Accomplished'(otherwise known as cut and run) is not far away. Sorry, 'Mission Accomplished' was in 2003, wasn't it.
Here's a must read about the level to which the US Media have sunk:

Yep hiding in the Green Zone and at the Airport with occasional excusrions to attack Sunni cities has produced nothing, now the war comes home to the Green Zone and its Seige USA. Opps wait the siege was what Saladin used against the Crusaders as Acre and Jeresulam fell so goes Baghdad.
