Bolivian artist paints Indigenous woman like the Mona Lisa

Bolivian artist Claudia Callizaya has a unique take on portraiture, and her newest creation outfits a woman with a similar steady gaze as the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci, with a traditional bowler hat worn by Bolivia’s cholitas - Indigenous Aymara and Quechua women.
The woman featured in Callizaya’s portrait is a local indigenous woman featured in a woven Andean shawl.
The artist says “I painted the Mona Lisa, with earrings, a Cholita hat, and a blanket. And finally now I’m painting her ‘aguayo’. Dressing the Mona Lisa like an Andean woman, like a woman from the highlands, she represents women from all over the world.”
