WHO TO BLAME

White Christians made Donald Trump president — again

(RNS) — White Christians remain an influential force in American culture and politics. Their support, and the support of Hispanic Christians, helped Donald Trump regain the White House.

(RNS) — While the United States has become more religiously diverse in recent decades, white Christians remain the largest religious segment of the country, making up about 42% of the population, according to data from the Public Religion Research Institute. And for Donald Trump, their support has once again proved key to his victory.

Exit poll data from CNN and other news outlets reported that 72% of white Protestants and 61% of white Catholics said they voted for Trump. Among white voters, 81% of those identified as born-again or evangelical supported Trump, up from 76% in 2020 and similar to the 80% of support Trump received in 2016.

Ryan Burge, associate professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University, said that kind of support is hard to overcome, especially in the Rust Belt swing states that helped seal Trump’s victory.

“It’s hard to overcome the white God gap in a place like Pennsylvania, or Michigan and Wisconsin,” he said.

But Trump also won the Christian vote overall: 58% of all Catholics voted for him and 63% of Protestants, according to the early exit polls. If the early exit poll numbers hold steady, that will prove to be a jump in Catholic support for Trump compared with 2020, when 50% of Catholics voted for him.

Some of that may have to do with an increase in Trump support among Hispanic voters. Almost two-thirds of Hispanic Protestant (64%) and just over half of Hispanic Catholic voters (53%) also supported Trump, according to initial CNN exit polls. In the 2020 election, only about a third of Hispanic Catholics voted for Trump.

Jews (78%), other non-Christians (59%) and those with no religious affiliation (71%) supported Kamala Harris, according to the CNN exit poll.

Robert Jones, PRRI’s president, said more data is needed to understand the Hispanic vote in the 2024 election. But he wonders whether economics played a major role in Hispanic support for Trump, more than religion.

“They don’t feel like their situation has improved over the past four years,” he said.

Jones said Trump was able to send two distinct messages during the campaign — one about being tough on immigration and crime, which appealed to white Christians, and the other about the economy, which appealed to Hispanic Christians.

Burge suspects Hispanic Catholics and Protestants are more conservative on social issues, such as abortion and LGBTQ rights, which may also have played a role in the election.

He wonders if the Harris campaign’s support for abortion rights, in particular, may have backfired with Hispanic Christians.

“That’s a hard message for a moderate Hispanic voter,” he said, adding that while voters in a number of states supported abortion rights, that did not carry over to overall support for Harris. Burge also wonders if inflation and other issues about the economy swung the elections. While Trump is known for causing controversy online, Burge said, many voters are paying more attention to day-to-day concerns.

“All they are thinking is, gas is expensive, bread is expensive, milk is expensive,” he said. “Let’s try something else. That’s the story.”

Both white and Hispanic Christians may also be worried about the changing nature of America and the decline of religion’s power in the culture. While few Americans want the nation to have an official Christian religion, many do see Christianity as important or feel a nostalgia for God and country patriotism, rather than a culture where secular values dominate.

And the swing states that decided the election, such as Wisconsin, are places where white Christians — especially white mainline Protestants and white Catholics who supported Trump — are found in large numbers.

Samuel Perry, a University of Oklahoma sociologist who studies Christian nationalism and other religious trends, wonders if the growth of nondenominational and Pentecostal churches in the United States may have played a role in the 2024 races.

Those churches are often multiethnic, he said, but not because white Christians are joining predominantly Black or Hispanic Christians. Instead, he said, Christians of color are joining majority-white churches that often lean Republican. That can affect their voting patterns, he said.

“Their allegiance is not to their ethnic group, who tend to vote Democrat,” he said. “It’s going to be more of a multiethnic conservative, white-dominated Christianity that unequivocally votes Republican.”

Jones said the 2024 election once again shows the close allegiance between white Christians and the Republican Party and the divided nature of religion in America. Most faith categories in America — Jews, Muslims, Black Protestants, nonreligious Americans and, until 2024, Hispanic Catholics — have supported the Democratic Party. White Christians, on the other hand, remained tied to Republicans.

“They have not moved a centimeter,” said Jones. “And they get out and vote.”

Faith groups resolve to protect migrants, refugees after Trump win

(RNS) — ‘Together, we will transform our grief into a force for change that will build a more just, equitable society that respects the dignity of all people,’ Omar Angel Perez, Faith in Action’s immigrant justice director, said.

(RNS) — Former President Donald Trump’s election to a second term prompted faith groups that work with migrants and refugees to reaffirm their commitment to continue their work on Wednesday (Nov. 6), after Trump campaigned on blocking migration and carrying out record deportations.

“Given President-elect Trump’s record on immigration and promises to suspend refugee resettlement, restrict asylum protections, and carry out mass deportations, we know there are serious challenges ahead for the communities we serve,” said Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, president and CEO of Global Refuge, formerly known as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, in a statement.

On the campaign trail, Trump also promised to end automatic citizenship for immigrants’ children born in the U.S.; end protected legal status for certain groups, including Haitians and Venezuelans; and reinstate a travel ban for people from certain Muslim-majority areas

If Trump carries out his plans, FWD.us, an immigration and criminal justice reform advocacy organization, projects that by the start of 2025, about 1 in 12 U.S. residents, and nearly 1 in 3 Latino residents, could be impacted by the mass deportations either because of their legal status or that of someone in the household.

“If the mass deportation articulated throughout the campaign season is implemented, it would tear families, communities, and the American economy apart,” Mark Hetfield, president of HIAS, a Jewish nonprofit working with refugees, said in a statement. “The solution to the disorder at the border is to prioritize comprehensive immigration reform that updates our antiquated immigration laws while protecting people who need refuge.”

“We will continue to speak truth to power in solidarity with refugees and displaced people seeking safety around the world,” Hetfield said. “We will not be intimidated into silence or inaction,” his organization wrote.

Omar Angel Perez, immigrant justice director for Faith in Action, a social justice organization, said in a statement, “We recognize the fear and uncertainty many are feeling and pray that we can channel that energy into solidarity and resilience.”

“This moment calls us to take immediate action to protect the communities targeted throughout this campaign and during the prior Trump administration,” Perez said. “We remain committed to providing resources, support, and training to empower people to know their rights and stand firm against attempts to undermine their power.”

Matthew Soerens, vice president of advocacy and policy at World Relief, the humanitarian arm of the National Association of Evangelicals, pointed to polling by Lifeway Research earlier this year that showed that 71% of evangelicals agree that the U.S. “has a moral responsibility to accept refugees.”

“A majority of Christian voters supported President-elect Trump, according to the exit polls, but it’d be an error to presume that means that most Christians align with everything that he’s said in the campaign related to refugees and immigration,” he said.

Soerens explained that when Christians “realize that most refugees resettled to the U.S. in recent years have been fellow Christians, that they’re admitted lawfully after a thorough vetting process overseas and that many were persecuted particularly because of their faith in Jesus, my experience has been that they want to sustain refugee resettlement.”

“We’ll be doing all we can to encourage President-elect Trump, who has positioned himself as a defender of Christians against persecution, to ensure that the U.S. remains a refuge for those fleeing persecution on account of their faith or for other reasons recognized by U.S. law,” he said.

In a statement, Jesuit Refugee Service said Trump’s 2024 campaign rhetoric and his previous term had harmed “forcibly displaced people.”

Policies in his first term “separated families, set up new hurdles in the asylum process, dramatically reduced the number of refugees the U.S. resettled, introduced a ban on admitting travelers from predominantly Muslim countries, and deprioritized international efforts to address the exploding global refugee population,” the Catholic organization said.

To welcome and serve migrants is “an obligation” for Catholics, the JRS statement said. “How we respond to the tens of millions of people forced to flee their homes is a serious moral, legal, diplomatic, and economic question that impacts all of us,” the organization wrote.

Despite the disproportionate impact that Trump’s proposed immigration policies would have on Latino communities, Trump made significant gains among Latinos compared with previous elections, winning Latino American men’s vote by 10 points.

The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, attributed Trump’s success to several factors, including a rejection of progressive ideologies, economic concerns and concerns about government overreach.

But the evangelical megachurch pastor also said, “While immigration is a nuanced issue within the Latino community, there is a growing sentiment against open-border policies and the provision of resources to illegal immigrants at the perceived expense of American citizens.”

Karen González, a Guatemalan immigrant and author of several books on Christian responses to immigration, called Trump’s victory in the popular vote “especially crushing” in light of his anti-migrant rhetoric. She attributed Trump’s success with Latinos to white supremacy and misogyny within the community.

“We really aspire to be secondary white people, and we think that aligning ourselves with white supremacy is going to save us, and it’s not,” she said.

González was among the faith leaders who said they had not emotionally reckoned with the possibility of a Trump win before the results were announced.

Dylan Corbett, executive director of Hope Border Institute, a Catholic organization that supports migrants in El Paso, Texas, and in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, across the U.S.-Mexican border, told RNS, “I was hopeful that we had turned the page because I think (the first Trump term) represents a really challenging time in our country.”

Corbett called for “deep reckoning” in churches and grassroots communities. “There’sthe perception that the (immigration) system is broken, and I think the longer we wait to really fix the situation, you open up the door to political extremism. You open up the door to incendiary rhetoric, to cheap solutions,” he said.

While President Joe Biden’s administration had begun with “some really aspirational rhetoric,” it “left a mixed legacy on immigration,” opening the door to Trump’s “dangerous politics.”

“Faith leaders in particular are going to have to assume a very public voice in defense of the human rights of now a very vulnerable part of our community,” he said.

Corbett expressed concern that Trump might mirror Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s tactics in Operation Lone Star in his push for massive deportations, citing deaths due to high-speed chases on highways and record migrant deaths.

“It’s going to fall to border communities like El Paso to deal with the fallout of what we can expect will be some very broken policies and some very dangerous rhetoric,” Corbett said. “And so I think we have to prepare for that. And that means turning back to our faith, going back to the Gospels, going back to the witness of Jesus, the witness of the saints, martyrs,” he said.

In Global Refuge’s statement, the organization encouraged Americans to support immigrants and refugees, “emphasizing the importance of family unity, humanitarian leadership, and the long-standing benefits of immigrant and refugee contributions to U.S. communities and economies.”

Vignarajah added, “In uncertain times, it is vital to remember that our role as Americans is to help those in need, and in doing so, we advance our own interests as well.”

Perez told RNS before the election that Faith in Action had prepared for a potential Trump win and that the organization would draw on its experience “responding to the attacks on the immigrant community” and mounting protection defense campaigns to prevent deportations.

González recalled working in a legal clinic after Trump’s 2016 election and helping migrants process citizenship and sponsorship applications before he took office. “This is really the time for that sort of practical action of how we can serve our neighbors,” she said.

“Together, we will transform our grief into a force for change that will build a more just, equitable society that respects the dignity of all people,” Perez said.

Five takeaways from the 2024 election

(RNS) — An editorial writer is someone who comes upon the scene of a disaster and assigns blame. This election season has provided rich fodder for editorial writers of both parties, but especially Democrats.

In such a close election, almost anyone could be blamed or praised for the results. Democrats will look for people to blame; Republicans for people to praise. The exit polls are bad news for Democrats, showing them doing worse with women, Hispanics and young people than they did in the last two presidential elections.

Having followed the American political scene since I was a graduate student in political science at the University of California, Berkeley, in the early 1970s, I know that this process of blame and praise often ignores larger trends that really mattered.

Instead, here are five takeaways that I believe political scientists and historians will be pondering for years in an attempt to make sense out of this election.

First, yes, it was the economy, stupid. From the Great Depression through the 1960s, men without a college education were the backbone of the Democratic Party — so much so that progressive elites, who had lured them into the party, came to take them for granted. Their concerns were not taken seriously, and instead, Democrats constantly talked of the plight of minorities and women, but not of working-class males.

Under President Bill Clinton, free trade and globalization were supposed to make everyone’s life better, but in reality, they only made the lives of the college-educated better. Blue-collar workers were told to retrain for new industries after their jobs were lost, but the programs meant to facilitate this were a joke.

RELATED: Bipartisan stupidity

With the end of factory jobs, the path to the middle class closed for many men, and the healthy neighborhoods and small towns they supported were gutted. It should have surprised no one that these alienated men turned to Donald Trump as their savior. COVID, supply chain disruptions and the Biden administration’s massive spending bills, meant to fix this problem, added inflation to that mix.

Second, nativism, racism and isolationism, which have afflicted America in the past, are by no means dead.

The Republican Party appears to be especially susceptible to these diseases. Richard Nixon had his Southern Strategy to entice Southern whites into the party. He also preyed on the fears of white middle-class Americans with faintly disguised racial tropes.

Wall Street elites, who favored immigration and globalization, thought they could continue to control the party even as it racked up votes by pandering to bigots. But with the rise of Trump, they lost their handle on the party. This is no longer the GOP of Ronald Reagan or the Bushes.

This profoundly changed the political landscape. College-educated Americans who once tended to vote Republican because of economic issues switched to the Democratic Party because they rejected the GOP’s culture wars. Noncollege educated whites became Republican. This was the most significant party realignment since white Southern voters turned Republican at the end of the 1960s.

Third, Kamala Harris attempted to mobilize women with her uncompromising support for abortion, but the strategy did not work. Her edge among women this year (10 percentage points) did not exceed that of Biden (15) or Hillary Clinton (13). Nor did Taylor Swift deliver younger voters (18 to 29 years), who shifted toward Trump in comparison with 2020 and 2016.

Women’s issues are central to the Democratic Party. The teachers’ union, whose members are mostly women, is the party’s most powerful ally. Abortion is nonnegotiable for the party, as are diversity, equity and inclusion. Yet despite doing everything it could to push women away — nominating Trump, a serial abuser of women, demonizing DEI programs and largely retaining its opposition to abortion on the state level — the GOP doesn’t seem to have lost its share of women.
RELATED: In a world where Christ is king, authoritarian leaders can only be antichrists

Fourth, the anti-abortion movement is in disarray without a home, as both political parties have become pro-choice. While anti-abortion forces celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade two years ago, it was a Pyrrhic victory as a majority of voters in almost every state where it was on the ballot voted to protect abortion rights.

For years, the anti-abortion movement ignored the polls and claimed that the American public was opposed to legalized abortion. The polls and the votes on abortion-related referenda show that the public wants abortion to be legal.

Instead of converting the public to their cause, anti-abortion proponents relied on Republican politicians and judges to get their way. Facing electoral losses, Trump and Republican politicians ran away from the issue as quickly as they could.

But Democrats have only doubled down on choice. After Trump forced the GOP to abandon its abortion plank at the party’s convention this summer, Harris showed herself unwilling to say that medical personnel would not be forced to perform an abortion if it violates their faith, even though, as a lawyer, she knows courts will support doctors whose consciences will not allow them to do abortions. (In any case, who in their right mind would want an unwilling doctor to operate on them?)

Fifth, evangelical leaders continue to compromise their Christian beliefs for partisan ends. While most Catholic bishops do not endorse candidates or political parties — and I thank God they don’t — they also fail to point out that LifeSiteNews, Catholic Vote and Catholics for Catholics are political not Catholic organizations.

Too many progressive Democrats, meanwhile, continue to exhibit hostility toward religious Americans — remarkable, given that both Joe Biden and Harris are active Christians themselves.

In late October, when a man yelled “Jesus is Lord” at a Harris rally in Wisconsin, she responded, “You guys are at the wrong rally.”

This was a stupid response. She could have said, “Yes, and Jesus said, ‘Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked.’ He said, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Isn’t it wonderful that we live in a country where everyone can believe and practice their faith in freedom.”

Progressive Democrats don’t know how to talk to Christians, even when Jesus is on their side.

Pro-Kurdish party co-chair faces probe for remarks criticizing removal of mayors

Turkey’s interior ministry has announced the launch of an investigation into the co-chairperson and a party official of the country’s main pro-Kurdish party due to remarks made earlier this week criticizing the removal of mayors in the predominantly Kurdish southeast.

Three mayors, representing the cities of Mardin and Batman as well as Halfeti, a district in Şanlıurfa province, were removed by Turkey’s Interior Ministry earlier this week and replaced with government officials in a move that sparked widespread condemnation and protests.

All three mayors are members of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party).

The interior ministry announced on X on Thursday the launch of an investigation into DEM Party co-chairperson and lawmaker Tuncer Bakırhan and Mardin provincial chairman Mehmet Mihdi Tunç due to comments they made in speeches on Monday about the removal of the DEM Party mayors.

Bakırhan said during a protest in Mardin that Kurdish people will not remain silent in the wake of efforts aimed at usurping their will, citing the past examples of Kurdish leaders such as Seyid Riza and Sheikh Said, both Kurdish religious and political leaders, who were accused of revolting against the Turkish government in eastern Turkey in the early years of the Turkish Republic.

Some pro-government figures targeted Bakırhan for his reference to Seyid Riza and Sheikh Said and called on prosecutors to launch an investigation on the grounds that he was calling for a revolt against the government.

The DEM Party denied the claims in a statement, describing them as an effort to manipulate events.

The three mayors were removed from office for convictions and charges on terrorism-related offenses, including membership in an armed group and disseminating propaganda for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Since 1984, the PKK has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state that has killed thousands and is formally recognized as a terrorist group by Turkey and its Western allies.

Dozens of pro-Kurdish mayors from predecessor parties were also removed from their posts on similar charges in the past; however, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently expressed full support for efforts to reach out to Turkey’s Kurdish population, describing it as a “window of opportunity.”

Besê Hozat: We stand behind the will of Leader Öcalan

KCK Executive Council co-chair Bese Hozat said that the Turkish state could solve the Kurdish question with Leader Öcalan and added: “Leader Öclan is ready. We, as a movement, are behind his will.”

To begin with, we would like to talk about what people are currently most concerned about. A meeting with the people’s leader, Abdullah Ocalan, has taken place. What does that mean? How do you evaluate this? And what impact does it have on ongoing processes and discussions?

As a result of a great struggle, Rêber Apo [Abdullah Ocalan] was allowed to hold a meeting with his family, meeting Omer Ocalan. Before that, various rumors were spread to the public regarding the health condition of Rêber Apo. It has always been like this in the past 26 years. At various times, this, on the basis of the continued special warfare persisting state, has been disseminating rumors regarding Rêber Apo’s health and security status through various individuals, causing great concern and anxiety among the Kurdish people, almost creating an outcry, and then having various short-term meetings for a few times or maybe even just once. It is trying to create a perception in the public opinion, as if the isolation has been broken, as if it has been overcome. In this way, it is trying to pacify the rising resistance and break its effect. After that, the special warfare policy continues with all its violence and without any change.

Now again, the same procedure can be observed. The global freedom campaign aiming for the physical freedom of Rêber Apo has reached a very important impact. A very strong resistance and a high level of people taking responsibility in the struggle for the physical freedom of Rêber Apo have emerged globally. From the academic sphere, over many non-governmental organizations to so many other relevant institutions, masses of people have taken the struggle against the torture and isolation system in Imrali on their agenda. Social resistance grew everywhere.

The level of resistance that emerged through the global freedom campaign has brought such games to the agenda of the Turkish state. Because it was stuck and was facing difficulties. Also, the developments in the region are pushing the Turkish state to the limit. It is experiencing a serious deadlock in domestic and foreign policy. When all this came together, it led to the decision to allow this meeting.

Of course, this in no way means that the isolation has been overcome. Again, the Turkish state is with great effort trying to create a perception that the isolation has been broken. This has nothing to do with reality. This is part of their special warfare concept. Whatever the purpose of such information provided in the framework of the special warfare and propaganda regarding the health and security of Rêber Apo, whatever the calculations of the Turkish state, these will come back to the Turkish state in a very bad way. This is something I want to particularly point out.

Rêber Apo has always stated this in the past years. Any negative development in Imrali cannot be considered normal by this movement, these people, and the general democratic society. Nothing is normal on Imrali; nothing is left to fate. Everything that happens in Imrali develops as a result of a genocidal policy, attack. If even one single hair of Rêber Apo’s is harmed, these people will take it as a reason to destroy the Turkish state. There will be no such thing as Turkey, no such thing as the Turkish state anymore. Turkey will turn into hell. This would mean a civil war in Turkey that would end with the collapse of the Turkish state and the disappearance of the Republic of Turkey.

Rêber Apo is the mortar of the brotherly coexistence, unity, and alliance of the Kurdish and Turkish people. Rêber Apo stands for the Kurdish people. Rêber Apo stands for the alliance of the Kurdish and Turkish people. Rêber Apo stands for the democratization of Turkey and for the freedom of the peoples of Turkey. In this sense, any approach or practice that threatens Rêber Apo’s health or security will bring the end of Turkey. It will bring the end of the Turkish state.

They are playing with fire. Over the past 26 years, they have tried many things and played many games. The rumors that they spread regarding his health and security solely serve their special warfare. This is done by the state itself. They are trying to create a perception in society in order to pacify it. They are trying to break the impact of the developing freedom struggle, the freedom campaign that especially aims for the physical freedom of Rêber Apo. But the system of torture and isolation is continued with all its intensity. The genocidal attacks against the Kurdish people are being continued without interference.

As I pointed out before, what happened is staged. The rising struggle and the people’s outrage brought such a meeting to the agenda. Now again, the attacks of the state are intensifying. It started with the attack on the municipality of Shevshek (tr. Esenyurt). Now, they appointed trustees to the municipalities of Merdin (tr. Mardin), Elih (tr. Batman), and Xelfeti (tr. Halfeti) as well. The entire infrastructure of Rojava was bombarded on the pretext of the TUSAŞ attack. The genocidal attacks on Rojava have without a break continued and intensified. Similar attacks continue with all intensity and violence in northern Kurdistan, as well as in the Medya Defense Zones2. This situation has once again reveals the true face of this special warfare state, this special warfare government of the AKP-MHP, and the fascist government with all its nakedness. It was Rêber Apo who once again ripped the mask off their faces and emphasized that the isolation continues.

Rêber Apo revealed his stance and his approach in a very striking way. He said that if the conditions arise, he has the theoretical and practical power to turn the process from the armed struggle to the political and legal ground. He has this power, and as he pointed out, he can play a strong role in the democratic solution of the Kurdish question and can fulfill his duty and role in bringing peace and democracy to Turkey. As he said, he wants to serve the peoples of Turkey, wants to serve the democracy of Turkey, the democratic republic, and the democratic solution of the Kurdish question. The interlocutor of the Kurdish question is Rêber Apo. Rêber Apo is the negotiator for our movement, for our people. He represents the will of our people. He is the leader of the peoples. He is the pioneer of freedom. The Turkish state must solve the democratic solution of the Kurdish question by taking Rêber Apo as an interlocutor. Rêber Apo is ready for negotiations. He openly declared this to the public again.

If this state is going to take a step in this regard, if it is ready to solve the Kurdish question democratically, to save Turkey from a great catastrophe, from tumbling into the abyss, and from being dragged into hell, it will solve this issue with Rêber Apo. Rêber Apo is ready for this, and we as a movement stand behind him. As had been announced, we as a movement will take the solution and approach that Rêber Apo will develop as a basis for any step we take. We are a movement that will implement the instructions and perspectives of Rêber Apo.

The problem lays with the Turkish state, which is yet again after another of its games. By trying to deceive the Kurdish people, it hopes to get itself out of this difficult phase with little damage. This is the entire calculus of this government. For them, it is not about the democratic solution of the Kurdish question and not about the democratization of Turkey. It isn’t interested in the brotherly coexistence of the peoples. All it cares about is its own power and its own survival.

There are serious developments in the region, and they strongly affect Turkey and form a serious challenge for the government. Turkey’s geopolitical and geostrategic position can no longer be marketed as effectively as it used to be. Turkey’s geopolitical position is gradually weakening, and so its general influence is also weakening. The developments in the region and the agreements made create serious new situations for the Turkish state. Now, the government itself is in a great panic. It is in great fear and anxiety of losing its power. It is in search of how to get out of this. And so they try to abuse the influence of Rêber Apo and his movement to their advantage. The Turkish state is trying to surrender the freedom movement. It is trying to break the will of the Kurdish people and surrender the Kurdish people. It is gradually trying to completely neutralize the democratic forces in Turkey and take them over. And is trying to design the opposition in Turkey according to their own needs. It is trying to drive everyone into the service of its own power. Therefore, it is conducting such intense special warfare.

Our people should not fall for these games. No inappropriate and unrealistic expectations should arise among our people and in democratic public opinion. One must be aware that this government is after a game. It is after deception and deceit. It is trying to break and neutralize the resistance and will of the people. In this respect, there should be no relaxation, no weakening, especially regarding the global freedom campaign. The global freedom campaign must continue to grow bigger and stronger. Today, if the state has been forced to let Omer Ocalan meet with Rêber Apo, if it has created a very limited and partial relaxation in this regard, it is because it has resorted to tactical maneuvers in order to get out of this situation.

The influence of the global freedom campaign is very crucial in this regard. The resistance developed by our people, of the guerrilla, of the women, and of the youth has a huge impact. All this resistance, all this struggle, hence the level of the campaign, have brought about such a situation that they were forced to a tactical maneuver. The global freedom campaign must grow even stronger. Social resistance must develop and grow everywhere.

On November 16th, a big rally is going to take place in Cologne. Young and old must participate in this extremely meaningful march. From the beginning of the month until the 16th, there need to be strong and meaningful actions in the four parts of Kurdistan, and the diaspora also needs to strongly mobilize. In itself, however, this does not only apply to the current phase. We are in an extraordinary situation. A genocidal war is being waged against the Kurdish people, against the peoples. Very historical developments are taking place. We are going through a fate-determining process for our people and for the peoples of the Middle East. So constant action and mobilization are necessary. This should not be limited to the march in Cologne. But of course our people, together with their international friends, in Europe must show a strong will there as well. But this must continue in the form of a serhildan3 both in the four parts of Kurdistan and outside the country. And this must be pioneered by the women and the youth. They must lead this mobilization strongly and continuously until concrete results are achieved, until Rêber Apo’s health, security, and physical freedom are ensured. As a matter of fact, when Rêber Apo attains his physical freedom, the Kurdish question will be solved democratically, Turkey will be democratized, democracy will spread to the region, and the peoples will be liberated. The key is the physical freedom of Rêber Apo.

Therefore, the global freedom campaign has such historical meaning and importance. It needs to be carried out and strengthened in every regard. The social, legal, political, diplomatic, and ideological resistance must continue with all its strength. And concrete results must be achieved. The level reached by the campaign has proved that if this struggle is continued vigorously, exponentially, the physical freedom of Rêber Apo will be ensured. We will realize the democratic solution to the Kurdish question. We can ensure the democratization of Turkey and the democratization of the region. There is already more than enough ground for this. The signs of this have also emerged. With this hope, belief, and excitement, and motivated by the beautiful greeting received from Rêber Apo, the campaign must be continued strongly. Based on this, I sent my greetings with great respect, love, and longing to Rêber Apo.

To have a closer look at the discussions in Turkey about the possible start of a new solution process. How do you assess this in view of the developments of the last few days?

There is no solution process, as they say. There is no will in this state for a solution in the current situation. There is no change in its mentality. There is no change in the century-old policy of denial and annihilation. On the contrary, the current state mentality and the AKP-MHP government aim to finalize and complete the century-old Kurdish genocide policies by mobilizing all its means. This is very clear and something they admitted themselves. There is no will for a solution on the part of this state, this government, and this ruling power. What exists are the ongoing genocide policies. There are a thousand and one special war methods and games developed to bring these genocide policies to a conclusion. This is how this process needs to be evaluated, understood, and grasped. There is a very intense special war. In the frame of this special warfare, many games and tactical maneuvers take place. I mean, one can’t even say that there is a change of discourse; there is literally no change. There are just games and special warfare.

But still, one needs to question why these discourses developed lately. These discourses need to be read and evaluated together with the developments in the region. The region is going through a very serious process. The borders are changing in the region, and new maps are being drawn. A different situation gradually emerges in the region. In other words, the region is currently being redesigned on the basis of Israel’s interests, on the basis of guaranteeing its security. Therefore, Israel is being provided with all kinds of means and support. Israel is currently waging a massive imperialist war in the region. In the same way NATO offers all kinds of support to the Turkish state, the US offers all kinds of support. The Turkish state is conducting a similar policy in the region under the name of neo-Ottomanism; an expansionist, occupying, and imperial policy. Israel and the Turkish state are conducting a similar policy in the region and therefore are in very serious competition.

Each state is trying to establish its hegemony over the region with the support of NATO, America, and Britain. And now the situation is this, that the Greater Middle East Project, which is being developed under the leadership of Israel with the support of Israel, America, Britain, and generally the West, and the concept developed for the region, currently excludes Turkey at many points. Many new energy and trade agreements have been made. Turkey has been left out of most of the agreements and equations developed in many regions, from India to the Mediterranean to Europe. Turkey is extremely worried about this development. It is experiencing great fear and anxiety. Because the policy and strategy currently being implemented in the region brings with it the shrinking of nation-states in the region. The ongoing discourses should be evaluated in relation to these developments. The Turkish state is trying to get out of this difficult situation, this impasse, with as little damage as possible by deceiving the Kurds, by neutralizing their struggle, by neutralizing the opposition in Turkey, and by aligning everyone with the government. It is trying to save itself. And the government wants to do this through special warfare, deception, and subterfuge. But it couldn’t keep this up for very long. The TUSAŞ attack unmasked this immediately. It revealed their true face. The TUSAŞ attack revealed how false these discourses were, how such a horrible genocide plan was trying to be carried out in a more violent way, and how it wanted to develop it. It revealed the true face of the AKP-MHP government.

How did they react to the TUSAŞ attack? Without any research or investigation, they immediately claimed that those who carried out the action had come from northern Syria and used it directly as a pretext. Their language is fake, and their mentality is genocidal. There is obviously no change. There are just their games, tactical maneuvers, and their special warfare. Already on the same night of the TUSAŞ attack, they bombarded the entire infrastructure and all the service centers of the people in North and East Syria. In the course of their prepared attack, they bombarded the peoples of North and East Syria everywhere and launched a horrible genocidal attack. And they developed the same intensity of an attack on the Medya Defense Zones. And then, immediately afterwards they appointed the trustees. This shows clearly how false the rhetoric of this government is – that it is a deception. It immediately deflated the mood of those who had been listening to this, who had wondered whether there was really a solution process, whether a step would be taken, whether something would happen. All this happened in such a short period of time. It is a game played by the state. If there was a real will for a solution, would it be possible for all this to happen, particularly in such a short period of time? No one must fall for their games.

Right now, the whole aim and goal of this state, this government is to bring the genocidal policies aimed at the Kurdish people to a conclusion. That is why they are carrying out relentless genocidal attacks everywhere and will continue to do so. It will persistently continue this.

As long as the government does not give up its policies of denial-annihilation, as long as it does not give up its genocidal policies, this trustee policy will not end; it will continue. When the trustee was appointed to Shevshek the other day, we said that this would spread to Kurdistan as well. And it did. We knew it because we knew the mentality of this state and this government. It comes one after the other. The other morning, they appointed trustees in Merdin. Elih and Xelfeti. They will gradually appoint trustees to other municipalities as well. In Turkey, they will gradually appoint trustees also to the Istanbul municipality. Gradually, they will appoint trustees to every place where democrats have been elected.

They are conducting a genocidal policy. Turkey is currently being ruled by a fascist dictator. The opposition did not want to see this. All kinds of lawlessness, injustice, persecution, oppression, and even torture against Kurds were seen as normal. Everyone turned a blind eye to these. Now they are gradually turning against them too. As they say, those who are the most silent will be the next in line. And they were very silent. This will not be limited to Kurdistan and Shevshek. It will gradually spread to Istanbul and Izmir as well. It will reach everywhere. Wherever dissent is heard, trustees will be appointed. Those who criticize will be locked up. Particularly for this reason, they had prepared the so-called law against espionage. They will lock up anyone who makes the slightest criticism, raises a voice, or objects. They will say they are associated with terrorism and that they are a threat to Turkey’s survival. This is how they try to crush all opposition. This is a reality that we have been pointing the finger at for years. If there is injustice and lawlessness and you don’t speak out against it, it will some day come back on you. When decay starts, when morality and conscience disappear, and you do nothing about it, then one day it will fall on your feet. What is the origin of all this? The torture and isolation system of Imrali. A horrible lawlessness takes place there. It started there, spread to all of Kurdistan, and now it is spreading to Turkey. There has not been a single voice from the opposition against the isolation until now. No one has put forward a reaction. If you don’t speak out against the system of torture and isolation in Imrali, if you don’t take a stance against the lawlessness and injustice there, you cannot prevent the lawlessness and injustice in Turkey. This will come to Istanbul and to Izmir as well. It will come to the CHP’s doorstep as well. Who knows, maybe tomorrow they will say that the CHP is affiliated with terrorism and will seal the CHP party office. Maybe they will arrest Ozgur Ozel, they will arrest Imamoglu. If you don’t take a stance, you won’t be able to prevent this.

We reached a point where everyone, including the fascists Bahceli and Erdogan, the government, and the opposition, admit that there is isolation in Imrali. They confessed what kind of crime against humanity they commit. Because that is what isolation is – a crime against humanity. Now they all admit that they have been committing a crime in Imrali for 26 years. To confess isolation is to confess that they are committing a crime against humanity.

There are nationalist, chauvinist circles in the CHP that do not even want to mention the word isolation. They are living such a nightmare. They want to prevent that the conditions of Rêber Apo change, that the so-called right to hope is discussed, and that Turkish law is applied. They want to prevent Rêber Apo from being taken as an interlocutor. They are playing games, trying to find others to be taken as interlocutors, and generally searching to prevent the solution of the Kurdish question. They say that the representative of millions, the representative of the will of a people, should not be seen as an interlocutor. What a poisonous mentality and language is that? What kind of Kurdish enmity is this? Opposing Rêber Apo means opposing the Kurdish people. Enmity against Rêber Apo is enmity against the Kurdish people. Whoever has such an approach towards Rêber Apo has a wrong approach towards the Kurdish people. Rêber Apo represents the will of the Kurds. He is their leader. He is the interlocutor for the democratic solution of the Kurdish question. Opposition and hostility towards Rêber Apo is hostility towards the Kurdish people.

At the moment, there are some circles within the CHP who are called leftists, some say they are social democrats, some say they are patriots, and things alike, but live enmity to Rêber Apo. They live in Kurdish enmity. No solution can emerge from such people.

Recently, the CHP has given some positive statements. It has been admitting that there is a Kurdish question. When Devlet Bahceli said that there is no Kurdish problem but a terror problem, Ozgur Ozel objected to this and pointed out that indeed there is a Kurdish problem. Devlet Bahceli denies the existence of a Kurdish question, and so does Erdogan. Ok, so there is no Kurdish problem in Turkey, but a ‘terror problem’, but why does this ‘terror problem’ exist? Where did this ‘terror problem’, as you call it, come from? Where did it come from? If there was no Kurdish question, the PKK would not have emerged. Now they call all Kurds who struggle for freedom terrorists. They call all Kurds who demand rights and law terrorists. All Kurds have been declared terrorists by this state. It calls all Kurds who want freedom, who want an honorable life, who want to share a common life with the Turkish people, who want to live together democratically, terrorists.

Now the CHP also objected to this, saying there is a Kurdish problem and that they would solve it. Good; one needs to applaud this approach. But the Kurdish people are fed up with this rhetoric. This is not new. All past governments have at some point said that there is a Kurdish problem. Even Erdogan did so back then when it suited him. When it no longer suited him, he started to deny it again. When it suited him, he said the path to the solution of the Kurdish problem passes through Amed (tr. Diyarbakir); when it didn’t, he said there was no Kurdish problem if you don’t think about it. Erbakan from his predecessors also said this, as did Ozal and Mesut Yilmaz. Saying it, putting it into a program with a few sentences… That period is over. This has expired. Now the Kurdish question imposes itself with all its urgency. The solution imposes itself. The democratic solution to the Kurdish question in Turkey is imposing itself with all its urgency. But the question cannot be solved with the current discourse. The CHP has to put forward a program for the solution of the Kurdish question. It has to put forward a road map for the solution of the Kurdish question. Accordingly, they will have to hold rallies everywhere and organize meetings with the Kurdish people. They will have to talk with the Kurdish people, with civil society organizations, with workers and laborers, and all the interlocutors of the Kurdish people, and listen to their demands. And first and foremost, they have to go to Imrali and take Rêber Apo as interlocutor. There is no way around this. The interlocutor is Rêber Apo. If the CHP is sincere on this issue, then it will have to be brave. If it is sincere, it will have to put forward its will. If it is sincere, it will have to take practical steps. If it is sincere, it will have to back up this promise. Against all kinds of pressure, all kinds of attacks, all kinds of blackmail, it will have to put forward a strong will for a solution and make it count. For example, if there had been serious social resistance in response to the appointment of a trustee in Shevshek, including from the CHP, then it could have become the leading party in Turkey again.

The CHP has taken 70 percent of the municipalities across Turkey. In fact, the CHP is currently governing Turkey at the local level. All the metropolitan cities of Turkey, the industry, the economy, and all sources of income are in the hands of the CHP. The CHP governs the intellectual world, that is, all the social circles that we can call intellectuals, or modern as they call them. Now, when the trustee was appointed in Shevshek, if the CHP had mobilized all its grassroots, if it had mobilized the people, if it had taken to the streets, Ahmet Ozer would have persisted in charge of the municipality. But the CHP did not put forward a serious will. Their resistance remained in words again. It made statements, held meetings, and made objections as if there is a judiciary, justice, and law in Turkey. There is no judiciary; there is no law. What law are you talking about? Is there the state you think there is? That state has collapsed. The institutions of the state have been liquidated. The CHP is deceiving itself. It is trying to deceive society. It is not putting forward anything serious. For example, if it had conducted effective politics, if it had mobilized millions of people behind it, if it had taken to the streets everywhere, would this situation have happened? It would not have happened. Now they have appointed trustees in Kurdistan. They will appoint municipal trustees like this everywhere.

What is the appropriate thing to do now? The thing to do is for the whole society, regardless of young or old, to take to the streets. A strong social resistance must emerge. Politics must be conducted through this social resistance. The opposition must take the social resistance behind them. This is what will change the situation. Otherwise, it will not stop until the opposition is completely eliminated. With this, they are also sending a message to Istanbul. They want to close the political space of Kurds in Turkey, prevent democratic politics from spreading in Turkey, and prevent the unification of the Kurdish and Turkish peoples. The fascist Erdogan talks about Kurdish-Turkish unity and brotherhood, but this is all demagoguery. He speaks into the void. They have a terrible fear of the unity, common struggle, and alliance between Kurds and Turks. They are afraid of it.

So what is the thing to do now? To resist strongly in Kurdistan, Turkey, and everywhere. Hundreds of thousands, millions of people must stand up and resist. This is the only way democratic politics and the opposition can achieve results. Otherwise, if they don’t do this, they will be neutralized. Moreover, our people have that will. It put forward a very strong stance from the very first moment. It must continue this. Hundreds of thousands, millions, should be in a continuous struggle. They must protect their will. They must protect their votes.

The Turkish State is applying colonial law in Kurdistan. It has abolished the right to be elected and to elect. It recognizes neither the elected nor the votes of the Kurdish people. It has actually deprived the Kurdish people of their citizenship. It is applying a law of genocide. Everything to be done against this is total resistance. It is necessary to wage a strong social and political struggle and, through this, achieve results.
Muslim: Salvation of Turkey is in the hands of Abdullah Öcalan

PYD politician Salih Muslim said: "It may be a game, but we must not be deceived."

While the Turkish army is bombing Northern and Eastern Syria, some within the Turkish government camp speak in a way intended to suggest a willingness to find a solution to the Kurdish question. In an interview with ANHA news agency, board member of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Salih Muslim, assessed these developments.

The Kurdish question is being discussed in Turkey and North Kurdistan. The Turkish government has made statements about this. At the same time, the army attacks by the regime in Ankara are escalating. How do you evaluate this?

A change is underway in the Middle East. Some people think that a third world war is taking place in the Middle East, and that is true. In every world war there have been changes, and the current war is bringing about changes in the system. In World War I the nation-state came to the fore. In World War II the world became bipolar. This system collapsed in 1990, so a new system was needed. This reordering process is now called World War III. In this new system many things can change. Sovereignty, borders, state, government, etc. can change. This process has been going on since 2010 and what is happening now is part of it. Those who stand in the way of this project will be eliminated. This included Hamas and Hezbollah.

"The Turkish state is in a hopeless situation"

Turkey also sees what is happening. Erdoğan says: ‘Israel will attack us.’ This is not geographically possible, but Erdoğan does not want to admit that the world is changing. The conditions and developments in the Middle East make this necessary. Turkey has never stopped the war it has been waging against the Kurds for ten years now. The Kurdish representative and Kurdish intellectuals have said: ‘If you solve the Kurdish question, both the Kurds and the Turks will win; Turkey could become a major power in the Middle East.’ But they have not listened. Now it has been understood that change is necessary and that nothing is possible without a solution to the Kurdish question. After ten years of war, Turkey is on the brink of economic, political and diplomatic collapse. Turkey must find a solution. The way is to solve the Kurdish issue, but the Turkish government has not yet been able to bring itself to do so.

"The Ottoman game does not end"

Many words and speeches have been made, but nothing binding. Apart from that, no practical steps have been taken. Whatever the government says, it is denied the next day. We saw this after the Dolmabahçe Agreement in 2015. Back then, it destroyed everything. The Kurdish people should also learn from their experiences. During the Turgut Özal era, some promises were made, but they were not kept. In 1993, there was a negotiation process, but this was also broken off by the Turkish side. Another attempt was made in 1998 during the Erbakan era, but Turkish fascism destroyed it too. The same thing happened in Oslo and in 2015. We should learn from this. It is true that the internal and external situation force us to take action. But the Ottoman game does not end. No practical steps have been taken so far.

Turkish government officials made similar statements at the beginning of the Rojava revolution. They invited you to Ankara, but then labeled you and your party as “terrorists”…

In 2013, 2014 and 2015, we came to the fore as a force. The international powers did not recognize us. We waged war against al-Nusra, the Muslim Brotherhood and other mercenary groups. Turkey had incited them against us. At that time, Turkey had just recognized us, they said: ‘A new group has emerged.’ This is how they wanted to reverse the situation. It was about getting us to line up with them and eventually join the Muslim Brotherhood. That was what it was about then. At that time, Ilham Ehmed, Asya Abdullah and I traveled to Ankara and Istanbul and sat with Turkish government officials. When they realized that we would not put ourselves under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood and that we were choosing the Third Way in Syria, they declared us “terrorists.”

Is the situation today comparable to that?

It is a game. It was a game then, and it is a game now. The games may be different. They want to distract the Kurds from their goals and fob them off without giving them anything. The Turkish government will go before the press and say that it did this and that, but in practice nothing will happen. Back then it was only about Rojava, now it is about all Kurds.

Ömer Öcalan, nephew of Abdullah Öcalan and a member of the DEM party, was recently able to visit the Kurdish people’s leader in Imrali. Öcalan conveyed an important message. How should we assess this?

Visits to Imrali are a right of Rêber Apo [Abdullah Öcalan] and the Kurdish people. After four years of total isolation, a visit took place. We were seriously worried about Abdullah Öcalan's health. For this reason, this visit is very important for us and our people. He sent his greetings to our people and is following the process closely. In his message he said that if the conditions are right, he has the theoretical and practical power to move this process from a conflict and violent environment into a legal and political one. He has international power, the whole world is watching him. Now it is up to the other side, and it will be seen how honest they are.

But will Turkey take its necessary steps?

There is no alternative, the external and internal conditions make it imperative for them. The key is Abdullah Öcalan. Of course, the Ottoman game will continue to be played. It is about weakening and destruction. But the salvation of Turkey is in the hands of Abdullah Öcalan. The moment has come, the government can no longer refuse.

So what needs to be done for a solution or a meaningful process?

The conditions must be created for Abdullah Öcalan to be able to communicate freely with individuals, his people and his organization. If this does not happen, nothing will happen, and then we cannot talk about a negotiation process. These are the preconditions. Conditions must be created for the peace process to take place. If you want peace, you must first give Abdullah Öcalan these opportunities.

During the Dolmabahçe trial, Abdullah Öcalan insisted on bringing the matter to parliament. Because the issue was being discussed both officially and by the whole people. It should be discussed in parliament. The Kurdish people want equality, nothing else.

Where do you think the current situation will lead?

Global developments make the Kurdish question as urgent as the Middle East issue. If you want peace in the Middle East, Syria, Turkey and elsewhere, you must solve the underlying problems. International and regional powers have recognized this. The more games are played, the later a solution will come. Delays make the situation worse. This question must be solved. The solution depends on the Kurdish people and other peoples. There may be games, but we should not be deceived. The Kurdish people have been subjected to tyranny many times in their history, but they have also played a pioneering role for humanity. Today, the Kurdish people and other peoples are ensuring unity and peace. We are the pioneers of democracy in the Middle East, so we are expected to play our historic role today. International powers have also recognized this. We must continue our struggle in accordance with this reality.

As a result of the bombing of strategic and service center buildings in Northern and Eastern Syria by the occupying Turkish state with warplanes and unmanned aerial vehicles between October 23-27, dozens of infrastructure went out of service, 18 citizens were killed and 65 were injured.

Citizens in Hol city of Cizîr Canton spoke to ANHA about the attacks.

Mihemed El Ebid said that these attacks developed within the framework of a plan to occupy the entire region. El Ebid emphasized that targeting the infrastructure and cutting off the economic resources of the people of the region aimed at eliminating the democratic nation project.

El Ebid said: “All of these plans will be thwarted. Because the people of Northern and Eastern Syria, especially the people of Hol, have chosen the democratic nation project, which embraces all peoples and is the most appropriate solution to the problems in the Middle East.”

Sheima Ebdulkerim El Hemadi condemned the occupation attacks on the regions of Northern and Eastern Syria and the targeting of civil infrastructure.

Noting that one of the aims of the attacks is to create conflict between the communities in the region in order to frustrate the democratic nation project, El Hemadi said that these attacks will not drive the people of the region to despair because they are working together for the success of the democratic nation project.

Protesting to the silence of the international community against the occupation attacks on Northern and Eastern Syria, El Hemadi said that this silence has caused the Turkish occupation to increase its attacks on the region.

Fewzî El Ilêwî noted that all the people of Northern and Eastern Syria are being targeted by the occupying Turkish state. El Ilêwî drew attention to the fact that all the people of the region are harmed due to the cuts in electricity, fuel, water and basic needs.

El Ilêwî added that the ideas and philosophy of Leader Abdullah Öcalan are the best solution not only to the Kurdish question but for all the problems in the Middle East.

At the end of his speech, El Ilêwî demanded the physical freedom of Leader Abdullah Öcalan so that he can play his role in solving the problems in the Middle East.
A PRESCIENT WARNING

Disaffected Voters May Want to Consider What Decades of Right-Wing Minority Rule Could Bring

Donald Trump will not last forever, but if he wins his far-right Republican Party’s system of minority rule could be here for decades.

The damage they would inflict on the people of this nation—and the world—is horrifying to contemplate.

November 5, 2024
Source: Common Dreams

It is widely believed, including by experts, that this presidential election could be one of the most important in U.S. history. And polling data still marks it as too close to call. Various groups of voters who might normally vote, but decide to sit this one out, could decide the outcome.

On the Democratic side that includes a significant number of people who will not vote for the party’s nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, because of the support that the Biden administration has given to Israel’s current military campaign. This support includes about $18 billion in weapons shipments from the United States to Israel.

More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its military operations in the Gaza Strip on October 7, following a Hamas attack from there that killed about 1200 people, mostly Israeli citizens. Public health experts have stated that the Palestinian death toll is likely considerably higher.

The majority of Palestinians killed have been women and children, often in Israeli bombings of civilian areas which include hospitals, schools, aid distribution points, emergency services, residential buildings and tents. American surgeons working in Gaza have documented multiple cases of pre-teen children killed with a single bullet to the head. The World Food Program warns that just 20 percent of the required basic food aid is being let in by Israel. The food situation is so bad that the Biden administration issued a complaint to Israel over the issue; Israel responded by banning UNRWA, the main source of humanitarian aid in the strip.

“Israel’s Imposed Starvation Deadly for Children” is the headline for a report from Human Rights Watch, one the most prominent human rights organizations in the United States.

Israel has banned foreign media from entering Gaza and has killed so many local reporters that the Committee to Protect Journalists has called it the “deadliest period ever for journalists.”

One place where there is a large number of voters who feel strongly about this is Michigan. It has more than 300,000 people of Middle Eastern or North African descent. It is one of the three swing states (along with Wisconsin and Pennsylvania) that together would provide Harris with the most likely path to winning the electoral vote and therefore the presidency.

Current polling shows Michigan too close to call right now, so the Arab-American vote could make the difference; NBC Newsnotes that recent polls show this vote “breaking roughly evenly between Harris and Trump, while they have typically broken closer to 2-to-1 for Democrats in recent elections.” And more than 100,000 voters in Michigan last year voted “uncommitted” in the Democratic primary, protesting Biden’s support for Israel’s military in Gaza.

It is not only Michigan where Democratic voters are horrified by the mass killing they see in Gaza and now Lebanon, where at least 1800 people have been killed by Israeli forces in the past five weeks. There are millions of people throughout the United States who feel the same moral revulsion. And it could cost a close election in another swing state.

But Trump would be worse. Most importantly he has a Congressional and powerful funding base—including a billionaire who has contributed hundreds of millions to him and the Republican Party—that would continue to push him to support violent extremism. His political base would put much less, if any, pressure on him to end the war; or even to stop it from expanding. And his likely cabinet choices would also be less willing to bring about a negotiated solution to the conflict.

Trump’s return to the presidency would also consolidate and allow for the expansion of minority rule in the United States. Under this system, Democrats need more than 40 million more votes to get the same 50 seats as Republicans in the Senate. And then the filibuster means they need 10 more for most legislation.

Our system of minority rule has also allowed two presidents since 2000 (George W. Bush and Trump) to take office after losing the popular vote. The election of 2000 brought us the Iraq War, which was found to be based on lies, took the lives of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and led to further avoidable violence in the region.

Trump and his Senators abused their power to get a 6-3, hard right-wing majority on the Supreme Court. A Court with unprecedented corruption. And a court that took from women their right to control their own bodies.

Trump will not last forever, but his party’s system of minority rule could be here for decades, as the Republicans continue to use their control of the Supreme Court and much of the judiciary, state legislatures, and the executive branch to tilt the electoral playing field further—through voting restrictions, gerry-mandering, and attacks on organized labor, with a focus on swing states.

All this does not diminish this urgent moral imperative of putting an end to the mass killing of innocent civilians in the Middle East, and our own government’s support for the attacks. But our ability to stop this and other crimes in which U.S. foreign policy is involved, is being eroded every day as the United States becomes less of a democracy.

So, for those who believe in the sanctity of human life and our shared humanity with people of different nationalities, religions, and ethnicity, it is clear that we have a big stake in tomorrow’s election. We have a dire need for a new foreign policy that shares these basic human values. This election may well determine how much we can make progress towards this goal—immediately as needed in the Middle East—and in the foreseeable future.

Palestinian BDS National Committee: Sanction Israel’s genocidal and apartheid regime (plus: Palestinian trade unions call for escalating BDS pressure)

In September, the UN General Assembly passed a historic resolution, calling for states and the UN to sanction Israel. This resolution affirmed that the July 2024 ruling by the ICJ triggers the legal obligation of all states to end complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid regime. 124 states across the globe committed to take the first steps to impose sanctions. The time to make this a reality is now!

For over a year, we have been sharing the images, stories and ghastly statistics of the rising number of Palestinians killed, burned, starved, displaced, and fallen sick in Israel’s ever more devastating genocide against the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza. We have been calling louder than ever for pressure on states and international institutions to fulfill the bare minimum of their legal obligation to end complicity by imposing lawful, targeted sanctions on Israel.

It is the complicity of the “international community” with Israel’s 76-year-old regime of settler-colonialism, ethnic cleansing and apartheid that has given it what the UN Secretary General calls “total impunity,” emboldening it to perpetrate the world’s first livestreamed genocide against the Indigenous Palestinian people.

Faced with Israel’s ever worsening atrocities and crimes against humanity, a growing number of states have started to heed the Palestinian call to end Israel’s impunity, giving in to pressure of the mass movements across the globe.

Some states have ended or downgraded diplomatic ties with Israel. Many have been forced to at least proclaim that they stopped military exports and transfers to Israel, even though the policy statements are often still not followed up in reality. Courts have ruled against sending weapons to Israel. Corporations have ended expansion plans and ties with Israel. Ships carrying weapons bound for Israel are being denied docking permission by a growing number of statesTrade unionsstudents, civil society organizations, cultural and academic collectives along with tens of millions of people of conscience around the world have been relentlessly organizing and calling for sanctions, military embargoes, boycotts and divestments against Israel and complicit corporations.

Yet, apartheid Israel continues its genocide in Gaza along with intensifying its violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, its rolling massacres in Lebanon and escalating aggression against other states in the region. Even though it has attacked the UN relentlessly, including killing at least 228 of its staff members, destroying UN schools, targeting UN peacekeepers in Lebanon with white phosphorus, and now banning the UN Relief and Works Agency in areas under its control, Israel remains a member of the UN!

As Israel’s shocking pulverization of international law threatens to push the entire world towards a colonial “might makes right” order, it is not sufficient to point the finger at Israel’s Western partners in the genocide. States across the world have to step forward and cut their own military, trade, diplomatic, academic, sports and cultural relations with apartheid Israel, as was done to isolate apartheid South Africa.

Join us in a global week of action from 20th to 29th November, leading up to the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, and pressure states and the UN to take concrete actions of accountability. Pressure your government to heed the unified Palestinian call for sanctions by:

  • Calling for or supporting demands to suspend Israel at the UNGA and to exclude it from international fora.

  • Imposing a mandatory and comprehensive two-way military embargo on Israel, including all military and dual use equipment and joint military and dual-use research and military-industry partnerships.

  • Imposing lawful and targeted sanctions, including ending diplomatic relations with Israel, imposing banking and financial sanctions on it as well as suspending trade and other cooperation agreements with it.

  • Refraining from aiding, assisting or recognizing the unlawful situation created by Israel’s breaches of international law, including through a comprehensive ban on business deals involving Israel’s illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories.

  • Imposing targeted sanctions on complicit physical and legal persons, Israeli and international corporations and institutions involved in Israel’s breaches of international law and international crimes.

Here are some suggested actions for this week:

  1. Peacefully disrupt the genocide enablers, the decision makers in your government and state institutions that keep up the ties of complicity.

  2. Organize a letter/email-action or other forms of mass mobilization to pressure your government, relevant ministries and/or parliament to heed context-sensitive demands, using accessible, local/regional languages.

  3. Organize advocacy meetings with MPs and ministers, briefing them on their obligations to end genocide and apartheid against Palestinians. You can find relevant materials for these briefings here.

Channel your grief and anger towards meaningful collective action. Push your government to end complicity with genocidal Israel and hold it accountable for its crimes against Palestinians and against humanity at large.

Never Again is Now!

Palestinian trade unions & professional syndicates call for escalating BDS pressure to end complicity with Israel’s #GazaGenocide & apartheid

First published at bdsmovement.net.

More than one year into the livestreamed genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in the occupied and besieged Gaza Strip, Palestinians stand united in resisting Israel’s genocide and decades-old regime of settler-colonialism, occupation and apartheid. We call on trade unions and workers worldwide to escalate BDS pressure to end the complicity of states, corporations and institutions in Israel’s crimes against the entire Palestinian people, as well as the fraternal people of Lebanon, among others.

International workers’ solidarity begins with ending complicity. This is not just a moral issue but also a legal obligation. The rulings by the International Court of Justice against Israel’s genocide, occupation and apartheid, the UN Human Rights Council’s call for a military embargo on Israel, and the UN General Assembly’s calls for sanctions all show that BDS measures are not just a right, but also a legal obligation.

Here are some of the most inspiring measures taken by trade unions worldwide in the last year alone in support of the Palestinian liberation struggle:

  • IndustriALL Global Union, a global union federation that represents 50 million workers in 140 countries in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors, has endorsed BDS, becoming by far the largest trade union body to support BDS

  • Norway’s one-million strong trade union federation LO has played a significant role in the divestment of the Norwegian sovereign fund, the largest in the world, of its entire holding of approximately $500 million of Israel Bonds.

  • Major Indian trade unions representing tens of millions of workers have demanded of the Indian government to cancel an agreement to “export” Indian workers to Israel to replace Palestinian workers, urging workers to boycott Israeli products and to not handle Israeli cargo.

  • Dockworkers unions in BelgiumIndiaCatalonia, Italy, Greece, Turkey, California, and South Africa have taken actions against Israeli ships or arms shipments to Israel.

  • The UK’s Trades Union Congress (TUC), representing 5.5 million workers and 48 unions, has unanimously called for a full arms embargo against Israel’s system of occupation and apartheid, reminding government of its obligations to prevent genocide.

  • IAATW, an international alliance of app-based transport workers unions with 100k members from over 27 countries and 6 continents, has decided to boycott Chevron gas stations.

  • USS, one of the UK’s largest pension funds, has divested its over $100 million holding of Israel Bonds after pressure from the University and College Union (UCU).

  • For the first time ever, 7 major US labor unions, representing nearly half of all union members, have called to “shut off US military aid to Israel.”

  • The General Union of Workers of Ecuador (UGTE) has endorsed BDS, including the cultural boycott of Israel, declaring itself an Israeli Apartheid Free Zone (AFZ).

  • Australia’s National Tertiary Education Union, representing 27,000 university workers, has endorsed the boycott of all complicit Israeli universities and called on Australian universities to end ties with the Israeli military and its suppliers.

  • France’s CGT Thalès (trade union representing workers of this arms company) has called for “suspending all collaboration with Israel because of what's happening in Gaza.” Most recently, the Paris section of the CGT trade union federation has endorsed BDS.

  • 700 members of Hollywood’s SAG-AFTRA union, including Oscar winners, have condemned Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and its murder of Palestinian journalists.

  • Argentina’s ATE Córdoba trade union has endorsed BDS, declaring itself an Israeli Apartheid Free Zone.

  • The Scottish Artists Union and the Artists Union of Ireland (Praxis) have both endorsed BDS, including the cultural boycott of Israel, with the latter declaring itself an Israeli Apartheid Free Zone (AFZ).

The Palestinian Federation of Unions of University Professors and Employees (PFUUPE), and the Palestine Academy for Science and Technology (PalAST), representing nearly 10,000 university workers, has welcomed measures by universities worldwide toward “reviewing, suspending and severing collaboration agreements with Israeli universities and research centers that are complicit in Israel’s war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.”

BDS pressure is the most effective form of international solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for liberation, justice, and the return of our refugees, building people power to end complicity. Accordingly, and in harmony with our call from October 2023, we call on all of you to escalate BDS pressure:

  1. Divest & Exclude from Contracts and investments, where applicable, complicit companies like IntelChevronAmazon, GoogleHPCaterpillarHD HyundaiCarrefourMcDonald’sFANUCSiemensAXA, and others. Pressure your institution (city council, university, etc.) or employer to do the same. Also partner with strategic justice movements (including student-led groups) to mobilize pressure on institutions, like universities and city councils, to divest from and end ties with military, tech and other companies arming or otherwise enabling Israel’s genocide, apartheid, and military occupation. This has been successfully done at Columbia University-affiliated Union Theological SeminarySan Francisco State University, the city councils of Richmond (California)Liege (Belgium)Oslo (Norway), and Belem (Brazil), among others.

  2. End Arms Trade with Genocide: Refuse to build, handle, or transport any military and dual-use items for genocidal Israel. Stop Israel-bound ships and military cargo, including providing “ flags of convenience,” through protests, pickets, lobbying governments, legal action, “bureaucratic” measures, and media campaigns.

  3. No Tech for Genocide or Apartheid! Tech workers and labor unions: organize from within the tech sector to build power to end the complicity of companies, such as Amazon, Google, MicrosoftHPIntelPalantir, and Cisco that are enabling Israel’s genocide and/or automating its apartheid.

  4. Pressure Governments to End Complicity and Impose Military Embargo & Sanctions! Keep following Palestinian civil society’s policy guidance and demands here.

  5. No Ties to Apartheid Union: Cut ties with Israel’s Histadrut, a pillar of colonialism and apartheid.
