DIRECT ACTION ANARCHISTS ARE INVIDUALISTS

11 Years After the Death of Comrade Sebastian Oversluij

Dec 14 2024

From Abolition Media

“Throw yourself into freedom, that’s my proposal!”

The Knife and the Word, Pelao Angry, Written/Song.

On December 11, 2013, comrade Sebastián Oversluij Seguel “Pelao Angry” was killed in an action/expropriation of a Banco Estado in the commune of Pudahuel, at the hands of a security guard of capital. In his life he carried out various anti-authoritarian political projects and initiatives, including: publishing projects, musical ensembles, libraries, action groups and propaganda. Since his death, he has been vindicated for the creative expression of anarchist ideas through music, drawing, writing, conflict and the constant tension to achieve coherence between word and action. From an anti-speciesist, anti-civilizational and nihilistic vision, he was a defender of propaganda by the deed and direct action.

11 years have passed since his departure, and from our present of struggle we remember the comrade, distancing ourselves from memory as a mere act of remembering, but rather, connecting with Pelao Angry in the current validity of expropriation as a form of struggle against the capitalist system. Historically, the action of expropriating the capital of the powerful has meant a means by which the exploited have recovered autonomy, throwing themselves into freedom to move towards an individual and collective existence outside the logics of wage exploitation.

The history of social movements, revolutionary organizations, anarchist groups and individuals and conscious exploited people, account for the innumerable examples in which assault, expropriation, theft and recovery, allowed access to what the political and business class has denied us. Whether as a vindication of the right to leisure, a fight against accumulation or as a means to sustain revolutionary projects and processes, the truth is that it constitutes an act that has accompanied the struggle against the commodification of all forms of life: human, animal and the earth. In this territory, the recent past accounts for the actions of distribution of the goods of the powerful in towns, land occupations, universities, schools and in rural sectors.

To take from the rich and give them to the exploited, as an exercise in subversion of power relations. However, our anarchic history connects Pelao Angry with the recoveries and assaults that comrades once executed: Durruti with the solidarios, Rosigna, Di giovanni, Tamayo Gavilan, Jacob, among many others. We do not fetishize or romanticize one political practice over another, we are emphatic in pointing out that within the multiformity of our acts and actions, expropriation is one more, among many, where the anarchist revolutionary proposal comes to life.

11 years after the death of comrade Sebastian Oversluij Seguel, we know that the conditions of power established by the State, its defenders and perpetuators, are sustained and reproduced day by day, making it more than necessary to put anarchist revolutionary projects into practice. From there we also connect with Pelao Angry, because the commodification of life, the exploitation of some over others, the annihilation of the earth and non-human forms of life, is sharpened, deepened and reproduced without equal, cutting the horizons of living an existence outside the logics of power and capital, in short, Nothing has changed and if it has, it is to maintain this criminal and murderous social order.

The revolt of 2019 made it clear to us that the institutional path of change and the capitalist model are not the option to live freely. The constituent processes that came from the pact of the Chilean political class are nothing more than the reconfiguration of the ways in which the powerful maintain their privileges at the cost of submission, death, misery, indebtedness and repression.

We do not intend to impose a single truth, much less a single way of remembering, as anarchist collectivities and individuals, we are aware of the approaches we have with the ideas that Angry held in life. For us, bringing it to the present is to open dialogue, tension and the act of rethinking that the anarchist proposal of self-organization and struggle is not only possible but necessary, that it is still alive, and that despite the death and confinement of comrades these are part of our political proposal of an anarchism without adjectives, but which nevertheless bets on constant revolt and conflict against all forms of domination and power.

Against the indebtedness and misery of the banks

THEFT IS JUSTIFIED!

Self-organization, struggle and direct action.

Daniel Andreas San Diego arrested for 2003 animal liberation bombings

Dec 13  2024

From Dark Nights
November 27, 2024

Full title: North Wales, UK: Daniel Andreas San Diego arrested by counter-terrorist cops, wanted by the FBI in connection with two animal liberation related bombings in San Francisco in 2003.

Daniel Andreas San Diego has been wanted by the FBI in connection with two bombings which took place in San Francisco in 2003 claimed by Revolutionary Cells – Animal Liberation Brigade, simliar to the Animal Rights Militia in the UK, that ignores the Animal Liberation Front’s policy of taking all necessary precautions to avoid harm to human life. The two bombs were placed at the offices of biotechnology corporation Chiron Inc. in Emeryville, California, in August 2003. The first bomb detonated early in the morning, while the second, which was set to detonate an hour after the initial blast, was found and defused before it went off. Chiron Inc. was targetted for its links to Huntingdon Life Sciences (now Inotiv), the animal torturers and killers who were targetted by the Animal Liberation Front (A.L.F.) and campaigned against by Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC).

A month later, another bomb filled with nails went off at a nutritional products corporation, Shaklee Corporation, which makes nutritional supplements and eco-friendly shampoos and lotions – in Pleasanton, Calififornia. Nobody was killed or injured in the blast. It was targeted because its parent company, Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical, who does/did business also with HLS.

Communique of the Revolutionary Cells – Animal Liberation Brigade bomb attack on Shaklee :

“On the night of September 25th volunteers from the Revolutionary Cells attacked a subsidiary of a notorious HLS client, Yamanouchi. We left an approximately 10lb ammonium nitrate bomb strapped with nails outside of Shaklee Inc, whose CEO is both the CEO for Shaklee and Yamanouchi Consumer Inc. We gave all of the customers the chance, the choice, to withdraw their business from HLS. Now you all will have to reap what you have sown. All customers and their families are considered legitimate targets.

Hey Sean Lance, and the rest of the Chiron team, how are you sleeping? You never know when your house, your car even, might go boom. Who knows, that new car in the parking lot may be packed with explosives. Or maybe it will be a shot in the dark.

We have given all of the collaborators a chance to withdraw from their relations from HLS. We will now be doubling the size of every device we make. Today it is 10lbs, tomorrow 20….until your buildings are nothing more than rubble. It is time for this war to truely have two sides. No more will all of the killing be done by the oppressors, now the oppressed will strike back. We will be non-violent when the these people are non-violent to the animal nations.

In memory of all of those fallen before us in the war for liberation: Jill Phipps (animal activist), Barry Horne (ALF), Olaia Kastresana (ETA), Arkaitz Otazua (ETA), Angayarkanni (LTTE), Babu (LTTE), Bobby Sands (IRA), Patsy O’Hara (INLA), Carlos Guiliani (anti-globilization martyr), Lee Kyung-hae (farmer and anti-globablization victim), and many more on numerous other fronts. We won’t forget you, we won’t let your deaths be in vain.

Gora Euskadi Ta Askatasuna!
Up the Real IRA!
Long live the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine!
Viva La Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia!
Long live the Frontu Di Liberazione Naziunalista Corsu!
For the creation of Revolutionary Cells!
For Humyn, Earth & Animal Liberation!

Bringing the bomb and the bullet back into amerikan politics, Revolutionary
Cells –animal liberation brigade

—-

The revolutionary cells exists as a front group for militants across the liberationary movement spectrum. We are anarchists, communists, anti-racists, animal liberationists, earth liberationists, luddites, feminists, queer liberationists, and many more things across various other fronts. Where ever there is oppression there are those unwilling to idly stand by and let it occur, and those people make up the nucleus of the revolutionary cells.

Who are the revolutionary cells? It is an anti-gmo activist destroying a gmo crop, it is a basque youth driving a car packed with explosives destined for a spanish politician, it is a queer bashing back, a rape victim putting a bullet in the rapist, a corsican nationalist planting a bomb at a french bank, it is a cincinatti riot in response to police brutality, an animal liberationist shooting a vivisector dead on his doorstep. In short it is the spirit of resistance realized. It is moving from politics to praxis.

Anyone who takes part in the war against the oppressive heirarchies in this world can consider themselves a member of the Revolutionary Cells.

Revolutionary Cells Guidelines:

1. To take strategic direct action (be it non-violent or not) against the oppressive institutions that permeate the world.

2. Make every effort to minimize non-target casualties, be they human or non-human.

3. Respect a diversity of tactics, whether they be non-violent or not.

4. Any underground activist fighting for the liberation of the humyn, earth or animal nations may consider themselves a Revolutionary Cells volunteer.”

San Diego was later put on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list in 2009. He was arrested at a property in a rural area next to woodland. Following his capture, San Diego appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court as the process to extradite him to the US to face charges begins.

Solidarity and complicity to Daniel Andreas San Diego who had the strength to take the eco struggle to the belly of the beast.

Assassination as an Anarchist Tactic

From Montreal Counter-Information

Anonymous submission to MTL Counter-info

This is a raw, underdeveloped reflection on why political assassinations of CEOs, politicians, slumlords, etc., should happen more often. The assassination of UnitedHealthCare Executive CEO, Brian Thompson left me spiralling in a myriad of unexpected ways, mostly around these two questions: why doesn’t this happen more often? And perhaps, why do anarchists seemingly no longer do this?

Assassinations are primarily political. They are a radical act resulting from either a political analysis of power, or a threat to the order of it. Police, state, and corporations commit assassinations but they use their justice systems to legitimate them.

I find myself so hesitant to discuss with some of my most trusted, beloved comrades. It feels so taboo. What has liberal democratic propaganda done to anarchism that makes the topic of assassination so uncomfortable to talk about it as a rationale and reasonable act? Even if we hate to admit it, non-violence has a more pervasive creep than many of us are willing to admit.

In some circles, I hear a lot of people talk about the necessity of violence, but I’m not sure if it’s anything more than a romanticized notion of it. The experience of committing violence against one’s adversary is many things, though it often comes with a rush of adrenaline, sometimes a fleeting sense of euphoria, but it can also come with nausea, shock, and the intuitive feeling that with every act of violence a piece of one’s self is forever changed.

And at the same time, what the fuck world? We’ve been shown that the legal system is a joke. We know laws are made for the most powerful. We know that politicians don’t care about systemic change, but rather, they are more invested in the maintenance of capital and state order albeit with different takes depending on the political party. We know demonstrations alone don’t work, we know breaking windows or setting an executive’s car on fire isn’t enough to deter or intimidate, so what is one left with to do? What is left to be done so that when one says, “no, this will not happen any longer,” and acts accordingly, it happens no longer?

Those who have power and shape the socio-political terrain of this world will not step aside peacefully. We are fucking delusional if we think that another petition, demo, vigil, frontline is going to change anything. While friends and comrades caught RICO charges from the Stop Cop City struggle, Donald Trump caught the same charges and became President, again!

The state uses the police to back multibillion dollar projects. We cannot win when we try to stand against them as equal opponents, even in asymmetrical attacks the outcomes are grim. But if the heads of corporations, etc were killed, one by one, think of the way their networks would implode into chaos because of the fear and knowledge that they are no longer untouchable? They can be found. I’m not saying that assassinations are the only thing left to do. I’m just wondering aloud into the anarchist universe as to why this tactic is used more by the state, the police, etc., and less by individuals who understand/ experience the harm and greed of certain individuals who just need to die.

Millions of people applauded the recent assassination of UHC CEO Thompson, they also applauded the most recent assassination attempt of Trump. We are on a precipice. I want those reading this text to seriously examine their relationship to violence. Ask yourself and trusted friends, “how far are you/ am I willing to go?” Would you know the conditions necessary for that relationship to change or intensify? Or, do you provide endless justifications as to why a tactic of accelerated violence won’t make a difference. Be honest. Sometimes we say such things because we are just afraid of the consequences of getting caught or failing. When we are honest about our fears we can make plans to move beyond them. What things would you need in place to feel like you could increase your capacity to act violently? And to that end, to commit an assassination?

Assassinations are an anarchist tactic. The following is a list of known anarchist assassins – definitely incomplete – who decided that this was a viable tactic throughout history. Wikipedia has pages on each of them:

Licia Pinelli (1928-2024)

HER HUSBAND; PINO PINELLI WAS MURDERED BY THE ITALIAN STATE

From Kate Sharpley Library

On the morning of November 11, 2024, Licia Rognini Pinelli left us. We will surely remember her great determination and extraordinary commitment throughout her life in the struggle for truth and justice – not only regarding the fate of her husband Pino Pinelli – that made her an outstanding figure in the history of twentieth-century Italy.

For fifty years this determination also manifested itself in the painstaking collection of all the newspaper articles that spoke of that story “almost only hers,” of Pino’s murder, bombs, plots and State mystifications; we want to thank her again for allowing us to collect and digitally preserve the fruit of her efforts.

We will do everything we can to continue to preserve and tell the story of Pino and Licia, a founding part of our archive. A story not only ours, but everyone’s. Our thoughts are with their daughters Claudia and Silvia and their families, to whom we send a big hug.

From the Centro Studi Libertari / Archivio G. Pinelli di Milano, https://centrostudilibertari.it/
Archivio Licia Rognini Pinelli

A very important collection of the project “Pinelli: a history” is represented by the Licia Rognini Pinelli Archive (1969-2024), widow of Giuseppe (Pino) Pinelli. The archive consists of two series: “Correspondence” (1969-2024) and “Press Clippings” (1969-2015).

The “Correspondence” series includes the correspondence held by Licia during the same time frame with different subjects, including a good part of the letters she herself sent. The latter is not currently available for consultation for privacy reasons.

The “Press Clippings” series, which has been digitized and published online, includes thousands of articles pertaining to the investigations into the Piazza Fontana massacre, the trials, the inquiries regarding Pinelli’s assassination, the demonstrations, the trial and private vicissitudes of Pietro Valpreda; in a word, any article published in the main Italian newspapers (but also some minor and movement ones) from 1969 to 2015 that concerned Giuseppe Pinelli and the events of Piazza Fontana. The press clippings are arranged chronologically within subseries named after the newspapers’ mastheads.

Licia Rognini
November 11, 2024
From Federazione Anarchica – Milano – F.A.I.

This morning, November 11, 2024, following an illness, Licia Rognini, widow of Pino Pinelli, left us .

In the face of pain, not all of us are able to show strength of character, dignity and rigor as Licia was able to do for a long time when she was grappling with a cowardly and murderous power, a servile, manipulative and mystifying press.

Much of her life was dedicated to the battle to give back to Pino what the State tried to take away from him, his humanity, his ideals of social justice and freedom, and at the same time to raising two daughters, Silvia and Claudia, who are today always present in the anti-fascist and anti-authoritarian battles and in affirming the memory of our unforgettable comrade Pino.

Licia Rognini Pinelli
November 26, 2024
From Umanità Nova

“A State that does not want to recognize the truth is a State that does not exist. I do not feel defeated because I did not have justice in the courtrooms. Justice lies in the fact that everyone knows the truth.”

With this lapidary phrase Licia Rognini Pinelli – who passed away at the age of 96 on the morning of November 11th – summarized the path that characterized her life since her husband Pino was thrown from the office of Commissioner Luigi Calabresi to the fourth floor of the Police Headquarters in Via Fatebenefratelli in Milan, on the night between December 15th and 16th 1969, the day after the Piazza Fontana massacre. An uphill path, full of obstacles of all kinds, placed by those who held the reins of the anti-popular provocation that had to find in the anarchists, at all costs, the scapegoats for those infamous bombs. Licia, in her life, pursued with stubbornness, with lucidity the goal of knowing the truth about Pino's death in the Police Headquarters. A truth that the anarchists, and not only them, immediately affirmed, summarizing it in the slogan 'Valpreda innocent, Pinelli murdered, the massacre is by the State'. A truth that the State never wanted to give her, offering instead - after the false reconstructions of the first moments functional to present Pino as responsible for the massacre together with Valpreda and his companions and after the attempts to archive the case - the phantasmagorical tomb pronouncement of judge D'Ambrosio very close to the PCI who in 1975, in the rising climate of the historic compromise of Berlinguerian memory, resorted to the theory based on the "collapse that manifests itself with the alteration of the center of equilibrium which is not followed by loss of muscle tone and which is often accompanied by active and uncoordinated movements", in essence the famous 'active illness' - as it was called then - which would have forced Pinelli, subjected to the stress of an increasingly pressing interrogation, to stumble in the middle of the room until he leapt over the window railing. : After having ascertained the anarchists' innocence in the attack carried out by the fascists in collusion with parts of the State, it was no longer possible to continue with the tale of suicide, but it was also impossible to admit the complicity of those who were then in the Milan Police Headquarters, at the Ministry of the Interior in Rome and at the Reserved Affairs Office: so everyone was saved with the idea of 'active illness'. But Licia could not accept this solution and continued undaunted in her search for the truth, that truth that had seemed within reach when in 1970, Commissioner Luigi Calabresi, left alone by his superiors and tired of a press campaign fueled above all by Lotta Continua, had denounced the newspaper's managers for defamation in a trial that had immediately turned against him: from accuser he became accused; the subordinates present in the police room had begun to string together increasingly contradictory testimonies, forcing the judge to silence at least one, the most talkative. Licia will say that never before had the truth seemed to come to light. The recusal of judge Biotti and then the murder of Calabresi will take care of sinking that trial. Before then Licia had continued her fight with the complaint, in June 1971, for voluntary homicide of Calabresi and his associates present in the room. D'Ambrosio will take charge of the complaint to bring it where we have already seen, drafting a sentence without even a public trial, without cross-examination.

Year after year, decade after decade, the mobilization for truth and justice on the Piazza Fontana massacre and the murder of Pino Pinelli continued and never stopped. Just as the meetings of Licia, and then of her daughters Silvia and Claudia, continued in schools, clubs and situations where she was invited to talk about Pino and that massacre.

For Licia, the invitation to the Quirinale by President Napolitano in 2009 seemed like yet another opportunity to obtain the justice she had sought. After so many cover-ups and archiving, Napolitano's words acknowledging the wrongs suffered by her partner seemed to be able to open a door for a new proceeding that would bring those responsible to trial. Nothing. It was just a political operation aimed at 'pacifying' those who had never been in conflict, the widows, sons and daughters of the anarchist and the commissioner. And with this 'pacification', trying to close an entire historical period, effectively hiding the responsibilities of the political class and the Italian bourgeoisie in the strategy of tension.

Not even an investigative book, written by Gabriele Fuga and Enrico Maltini (published first by Zero in Condotta and then, expanded, by Colibrì) which revealed for the first time ever the presence of agents of the Italian secret services, of the infamous Reserved Affairs Office, in the interrogations that led to Pino's death, served to reopen even a shred of an investigation.

A magistrate once confided to Licia that if it weren't for her, with her stubbornness and determination to seek the truth about Pino's death, Valpreda would have been sentenced to life in prison. It's no coincidence that those who knew Licia always called her a 'rock', a stone that contributed to derailing a train, together with all those who, in this half century, have worked to keep alive the memory and denunciation of the misdeeds of power.

On the afternoon of Friday the 15th, her funeral took place at the funeral home on Via Corelli, the family having refused the institutional ceremony proposed by Mayor Sala. Several hundred people gathered around Licia's family, her daughters Silvia and Claudia, and her grandchildren in an embrace that was not at all ceremonious, with flag waving, songs and words. Numerous speeches followed, focusing on the human dimension and Licia's commitment to the truth. Truth that can only mean the full assumption of responsibility by the State apparatus in Pino's murder. There was no shortage of political and social figures in attendance, such as the Milanese secretary of the ANPI who supported the Pinelli sisters in organizing the funeral, as well as representatives of Milanese society. Many anarchists contributed, with their testimony and their presence, to remembering the meaning of that massacre, of that murder and of the false accusations that kept Valpreda, Gargamelli and their companions in prison for three years.

IWA Report on activities during the Week Against Non-Payment of Wages

Report on activities during the International Week Against Non-Payment of Wages

In the third week of October, we have been highlighting the phenomenon of non-payment of wages for several years. This year, member sections and organizations close to the International Workers' Association (MAP) organized perhaps the most diverse forms of activities to date between October 14-20 - public meetings, pickets, discussion meetings and workshops, but also hanging banners, distributing thematic publications, stickers and posters in the streets, or sharing information about non-payment of wages in the online space. Let's take a closer look at them.

SPAIN

The National Confederation of Labor (CNT-AIT) in Albacete organized a rally in the Plaza del Altozano (https://cntaitalbacete.es/2024/10/sindical-la-lacra-del-regimen-salarial...). On Saturday, October 19, union members unfurled a banner and distributed leaflets. The location was deliberately chosen so that the union could confront the event of employers' organizations that are campaigning for consumption.

The CNT-AIT also pointed out the situation in the country:

"Recently, non-payment of wages has become widespread in the Kingdom of Spain, mainly in the private sector providing public services. This concerns, for example, companies that are in charge of retirement homes, cleaning, cooking, transport, etc."

She also pointed out that in addition to exploitation that arises due to the existence of the wage system, non-payment of wages also has other causes:
- insufficient application of collective agreements and wage tables by employers,
- non-payment of overtime,
- fraud in hiring,
- unilateral application of fundamental adjustments in the field of working conditions,
- incorrect application of job categories,
- non-payment of bonuses and holidays,
- dismissals, etc.

During the discussions in the square, it was clear that non-payment of wages and exploitation is widely understood as a problem and needs to be confronted - raising awareness, organizing and conducting disputes through direct actions and in a way that allows for assemblies to decide. The CNT-AIT also pointed out the international dimension of the problem and expressed solidarity with other MAP unions that are involved in disputes over unpaid wages:

"We would also like to express our support to the couriers in Poland fighting against precarious work and unpaid wages, to the friends in Slovakia who worked at Veganano, to the friends in Madrid fighting against Grupo Los Serenos, etc., and to the entire working class involved in the struggles against unpaid wages."

The CNT-AIT in Madrid held a picket on October 17 against the company “Grupo Los Serenos”, which owes its member wages, severance pay and holiday pay (https://sovmadrid.org/piquete-contra-el-grupo-los-serenos-el-jueves-17-1...). Our friend worked for them from 2023 to 2024. When he started speaking out against working conditions and went to court, the company responded with fabricated warnings so that it could “objectively” fire him. The protest took place in front of the building that is the customer of Los Serenos’ cleaning services. In this way, the CNT-AIT is trying to put pressure on the company, which is silent and difficult to contact. The president of the building owners’ association also came to see the action, and was asked to terminate his contract with Los Serenos. Discussions were also held with people from the neighborhood, slogans were chanted, reasons were explained why not to cooperate with this company, but there was also talk about precarious working conditions, the need to collectively defend our rights and put an end to the class system in which we live.

In Madrid, during the Week, there was also a protest against the company Acaya, which has owed salaries to workers at the Pipo Velasco youth center for two years (https://sovmadrid.org/piquete-contra-el-impago-de-salarios-de-acaya-ocio...). The date was deliberately chosen to coincide with the CantArte dance and music festival, which is known for its large attendance. Banners were unfurled, slogans were chanted at the center's staff, and leaflets were also handed out to passersby.

FRANCE

CNT-AIT France prepared a report for the MAP sections, from which we select:

"This week is a week like any other for us, because the fight against wage theft is part of our regular activity. But at the same time, during it we can point out what is the 'everyday' activity of an anarcho-syndicalist organization, which we usually don't talk about because we consider it too common."

In mid-October, a worker from a cleaning company contacted the union in Toulouse. Due to the distance, he had to use a car to travel to work, but it broke down and the company threatened to fire him. It turned out that according to the collective agreement for the sector, the dismissal of the worker would be illegal and that for years the boss had systematically deprived him of part of his salary, which was due to him for car maintenance and for transfers between individual work locations. The union offered to go to the boss together with the worker, but the worker decided to confront the boss alone. After a week, he contacted again and thanked him, saying that thanks to the information from the union he had managed to keep his job and that he would work elsewhere, where he could get to by public transport. He decided not to ask for the money owed.

At the same time, a seasonal worker in Paris contacted the union. He went to pick fruit, but he had no employment contract or pay slip and was receiving a lower wage compared to others at his workplace. The union tried to obtain the missing documents from the employer, which they managed to do, but they were not complete. It turned out that in this case it would be difficult to reach a settlement - there was no interest on the part of colleagues to get involved and the harvest had already ended, so the possibilities of putting pressure on the boss were significantly limited.

The CNT-AIT also develops the idea of individual and more collective disputes:

“We prefer to support collective struggles. An example is the recent struggle at Ducuing Hospital (https://www.ainfos.ca/24/aug/ainfos00398.html), where administrative staff went on strike for payment of part of the wages that management had stolen from them. However, in the case of extremely precarious jobs, such as cleaning jobs or seasonal agricultural work, it is more difficult to organize than in enterprises where you have a permanent contract, because workers with precarious and temporary contracts often do not know each other and are only together for a limited time on a construction site, on a temporary assignment or during the agricultural season.”

He adds that an important part of the union's activities is building class awareness and spreading ideas that say that working people as such have common interests, regardless of their origin or situation (permanent contract, fixed-term contract, temporary work, etc.). These interests have nothing to do with the interests of bosses and, in conjunction with organizing in anarchist unions and on a solidary basis, we can have power. Such awareness, gained in times of "peace", can later help us to stand up for ourselves and act collectively in disputes with bosses.

SERBIA

The Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative (ASI) has also managed to establish contacts with workers without paid wages this year.

In one case, we already know the outcome. It was the case of DExpress, which ignored the worker's requests for payment of wages, per diems, and transportation and food expenses, while working most of the time without a contract. However, he was determined to fight together with ASI. After ASI contacted the company and indicated the problems that direct action would cause them, the entire amount owed was immediately paid, as well as compensation for the other items mentioned.

During the Week, stickers dedicated to the topic also appeared on the streets of several Serbian cities, and a new issue of the newspaper Direktna akcija (Direct Action) was distributed in front of businesses. The articles dealt with non-payment of wages, violence against women in the Yura factory, the fight against unpaid wages in schools, etc.

ASI explains that when people are alone, it is often very difficult for them to take up the fight against their bosses. However, if they act collectively and with determination, the balance of power can change and the other side will start to back down. That is why it makes sense to organize also in the fight for higher wages, more breaks, lighter work, a shorter work week, more autonomy at work and other demands.

"Thanks to organizing and direct action, we can achieve everything that bosses owe us by law, but not only that! ... Through collective organizing, decision-making, sharing experiences and overall building a culture of mutual assistance, we are building a world where people's needs are important. That is why we organize and connect with workers all over the world. Intergalactic Diner, Detox Kitchen, Ana Ćirković doo, Drink Store are examples of companies that paid back wages after we, our union and the workers, put pressure on them."

POLAND

The Polish Trade Union Confederation (ZSP) has a lot of experience in fighting for the payment of unpaid wages. Recently, it has focused mainly on the Żabka grocery chain, against which it has already succeeded in a number of disputes. Before the start of the Week, it organized a picket in Gdańsk in connection with the payment of wages to a teenager who came to Poland from Ukraine after the outbreak of war. The problem was resolved very quickly.

Although the ZSP had to deal with an urgent case of unlawful dismissal during the Week, it managed to spread a publication on non-payment of wages for workers from abroad on social media. It is currently available in English (https://zsp.net.pl/files/wage-theft-foreigners.pdf) and Ukrainian, with other languages possibly added.

He also spread the word about the issue among people in the courier services industry, where he is currently involved in a dispute. It is not about non-payment of wages, but previous experiences with Uber have shown that it is a topic that people need to be informed about.

SLOVAKIA / AUSTRIA

For the Priama Akcia union, this year was the first experience with the promotion of the Week connected with the ongoing dispute over unpaid wages. On Wednesday, October 16, an international campaign was launched to support workers in the dispute with the VegaNana confectionery, which has been ongoing since the end of August. Articles in English and German with information on how to get involved in the dispute from abroad were added to the English section of the PA website and to the MAP website (https://www.priamaakcia.sk/kategoria/english). The articles contained sample protest messages, which made it easier for MAP sections and other people to participate.

The expansion of the dispute to the international level has significantly increased the pressure on those responsible. This was also facilitated by cross-border cooperation with another MAP section - the Vienna Workers' Syndicate (WAS). Both unions held a joint protest in Vienna on October 18. During the protest, former VegaNana employees Jana, Laura and Veronika personally handed over a letter to GlutenFreeX to remind them that they had still not answered questions regarding their cooperation with VegaNana. VegaNana's debt is €17,252.30 and, despite all the facts, GlutenFreeX continues to buy cakes from the person responsible for this debt and, moreover, slanders PA online. The dispute is still ongoing.

In addition to the aforementioned activities, stickers and posters for the Week were also distributed in Slovak cities, and the PA published a text calling for contact if workers have problems with unpaid wages.

IRELAND

On Tuesday 15th October, Organise! held a workshop on wage arrears in Belfast at the new library, reading room and community space, The (A) Centre. They discussed what wage arrears, or wage theft (as some organisations call it), is and how it can be combatted.

Successes in obtaining unpaid wages associated with termination of employment were mentioned. These were mainly in the restaurant industry and although there were no major disputes, the fact that workers were given advice and the amounts owed were calculated together helped. In the cases mentioned, the employers paid the debts. Organise! adds:

"So far, confident and factual argumentation on the part of workers about what is theirs has been sufficient, but it is clear to us that this will not always be the case."

The meeting also discussed a situation that sometimes occurs when a problem affects more than one person.

"In one case, the employer did not pay the salary of a female and a male worker after the termination of the employment relationship (unpaid vacation). Only one of them, with whom we had already been in contact, contacted Organise!. After discussing the problem, the female worker submitted a written request to the employer for payment of the unused vacation, and the employer paid it immediately. The second worker, despite being encouraged by a colleague to contact us, preferred a more humble oral request. In the end, he was intimidated by the owner and two managers, who told him that they did not owe him anything. This showed us how necessary self-confidence and solidarity are when confronting bosses. Although these were not major disputes and did not escalate, they are significant on a small scale."

A positive outcome of the meeting was that those present were encouraged to organize further open meetings, discussions, and workshops dedicated to organizing in the workplace.

In addition to the workshop, Organise! also covered the issue of unpaid wages in the October issue of the Northern Black Star newsletter (https://organiseanarchistsireland.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/BlackSt...). They also highlighted the fact that in Northern Ireland, employers are withholding wages worth an estimated £200 million a year (mostly in the restaurant industry, which employs around 65,000 people).

BRITAIN

The Solidarity Federation (SF) also has extensive experience in combating wage arrears. On Saturday 19 October, SF organised a workshop in Bristol to discuss various forms of wage arrears in both the private and service sectors and how to combat them. The union also produced a comprehensive infographic on the topic (see FB post: https://www.facebook.com/bristolsf/posts/pfbid02wCJmBSx5Y6SsuG8dHg1yofRc...) and promoted the Week in the Streets.

NORWAY

The Norwegian Syndicalist Federation (NSF) promoted the Week on its website, Mastodon, on a well-known FB page dedicated to the struggles of workers and among people in its vicinity. It brought new information about the application of the 2022 law, which, according to the government, was an example of its serious interest in protecting workers, but is intended to punish only serious acts. The law has been used in 284 cases in the eighteen months since its adoption. However, only in one case has anyone actually been convicted and there is no evidence to confirm that it has succeeded in reducing the number of cases of non-payment of wages.

The NSF also published a multilingual publication dedicated to the rights of foreign workers in the country in the areas of wages, working hours and contracts, vacations, and the work environment.

GERMANY

In Germany, three anarcho-syndicalist groups from Cologne, Munich and Ravensburg officially merged in early November under the unified name Anarcho-syndicalist Network (ASN) and act as MAP's contact in Germany. The Cologne group had previously prepared thematic posters in Arabic, Kurdish, Spanish, English, French and German. In a published statement, they state that non-payment of wages is a global problem and point out its various forms:

“Withheld wages sometimes accumulate in the form of several months of arrears. Or wages are only paid partially. Sometimes there is no compensation for overtime or the minimum wage is underestimated. There can also be non-payment of bonuses or illegal deductions from wages. In the worst cases, non-payment of wages leads to outright slavery. Wage theft often causes significant financial damage to workers. They usually have little or no savings and find themselves without the means to make a living. ... Several sections of the International Working Men’s Association have already taken direct action against companies that defraud workers. And anarcho-syndicalists are often successful in recovering unpaid wages.”

The ASN in Munich made a large banner that they hung on a road bridge.

RUSSIA

The Confederation of Revolutionary Anarcho-Syndicalists (KRAS) has one of the most interesting websites and FB pages dedicated to the struggles of workers in Russia and elsewhere in the world. Although it has very limited opportunities to actively lead struggles in the workplace, it makes up for this by regularly informing about the problems of workers. It identifies non-payment of wages as the main cause of labor disputes in Russia. At the end of September, they wrote about the activities of bus drivers in the city of Pyt-Yach (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug), in October about the case in Moscow. More information at https://aitrus.info.

UKRAINE

Although the Assembly collective from Kharkiv is not part of MAP, it also pointed out the ongoing Week this year. This time, it linked the non-payment of wages to a topic it has been working on quite actively lately - leaving the war-torn country and helping soldiers deserting from the army to get to countries west of Ukraine. The collective explained the ban on traveling from the country in a broader context, which also has an economic dimension - preventing the outflow of cheap labor.

In articles on the Assembly website https://assembly.org.ua from September and October, we can read about working conditions in companies and how non-payment of wages occurs. It is clear that non-payment of wages is also common in the EU, but not to the same extent as in Ukraine, so leaving the country makes sense for people.

CHILE

Workers' Solidarity (SO) are Friends of MAP and have recently become more active in addressing workplace issues. They participated in the Week for the first time and used it to promote a call for workers to share information about unpaid wages and organize direct action to secure their payment.

USA

The Workers Solidarity Alliance (WSA) in Philadelphia got involved in the Week in a creative way. Three specific workplaces where its membership works posted messages about engaging in solidarity activities in the fight against unpaid wages. One of the messages reads:

"Many of us have been working in the US for years, even decades. We have experienced bosses not paying us what we were owed or refusing to provide us with various benefits. We have heard bad experiences from our families or had friends or colleagues with similar experiences. Now we have the opportunity to learn, in the context of our own work situation, how to act in solidarity in the event of such problems!"

WSA also said they are pleased to be part of MAP in the US (it has Friends of MAP status) and plans to organize a workshop on solving problems with non-payment of wages and how to stand up for people in the immediate area if something like this happens to them.

The International Week Against Non-Payment of Wages was also discussed at the MAP plenary in Colombia in June 2024, where conclusions were adopted to improve coordination. More organizations ended up participating in the Week in some form than last year, and we also know that others (including from South and North America) planned to participate. We are constantly working on this topic and we believe that participation will increase even more next year.

"Unpaid wages are a problem that many people face, but not all workers and workers feel that they can do something about it. However, such actions show people that it can be done. They have nothing to lose and there is a very good chance that they will succeed!" (MAP Secretariat)

Israel does not want peace

Saturday 14 December 2024, by Édouard Soulie
The United States said it could impose a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. This was declared on 29 November for a period of 60 days. Just long enough for Biden to say that he had ‘done the job’ and hand over to Trump at the end of January. An inglorious end to the reign of ‘Genocide Joe’, who has spent the entire year supporting, arming and ultimately encouraging Israel’s genocidal escalation.

Since 8 October 2023, Israel has targeted Lebanon, in particular the south, claiming to be attacking Hezbollah ‘terrorists’ but waging the same style of war as that on Gaza. This policy accelerated at the beginning of August 2024 and, following the so-called pager attacks, Israel waged war on the whole of Lebanon: flights at the speed of sound, threats to airspace, widespread bombing in popular and populated neighbourhoods in both the north and the south. The aim was clear: to create the conditions for a civil war in order to bring about a regime change that would be more favourable to Israel.

A fragile ceasefire and no halt in Gaza

The initial conditions of the ceasefire included an end to the offensive in Gaza: these clauses are no longer demanded by Hezbollah, which has agreed to withdraw north of the Litani River. Israel did not really have to withdraw since its offensive never succeeded in establishing a lasting position in southern Lebanon.

The temporary ceasefire offers respite to the Lebanese people who had fled the south because of the bombardments. Several thousand people returned to the south of the country to find their villages and homes devastated. The damage is extremely extensive: dozens of villages almost completely razed to the ground, infrastructures devastated and another 4,000 deaths to be deplored. All this for a temporary and fragile ceasefire, since several violations of the agreement (52 in total, at the time of writing) by Israel have been recorded. For the moment, there has been no escalation, but it is to be feared that this will only be temporary.

Indeed, in operational terms, Netanyahu was somewhat forced into a ceasefire: an army of exhausted reservists, no victory either tactically (on the ground) or politically in Lebanon and an expectation of rearmament.

Nevertheless, the Gaza front was not interrupted at all. The massacres in the north of Gaza continue amid general indifference and blindness. Particularly since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed 192 journalists in Gaza. The death of aid workers from the American charity World Central Kitchen, which caused a scandal in April, has this time gone unnoticed by the media.

Destabilisation of the region

UNRWA has decided to halt all deliveries of humanitarian trucks through the northern entrance to Gaza. The UN organisation accuses Israel of allowing armed gangs to attack the lorries, either by demanding ransoms or by stealing the goods directly. Some of these groups have clashed with Hamas. Hamas accuses the Israeli army of complacency with the thieves. The disastrous consequence is that the whole of northern Gaza is left to fend for itself without any means of subsistence. Even if a Hamas delegation was received in Cairo to resume ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, it is clear that Israel has no intention of stopping the destruction and massacres.

Israel has profoundly destabilised the region. Palestine, Lebanon, but also Syria, with renewed fighting between armed factions in the Aleppo region. For decades, the presence of the colony in Palestine has been the main cause of instability in this region of the Middle East. It is high time for this breathless and increasingly dangerous colonial state to collapse and become a state free of apartheid, occupation and military expansionism.
