Interview with a Canadian Marxist

Canada has a quite a strong home grown left and even an emigre community of Marxists who view themselves as Canadian, because of our unique situation of having an actually existing socialist party in this country, that is the NDP.

We can argue later about how left wing or socialist it is, however since most of the Marxist Left cut their teeth in or around the NDP, suffice it to say it is the party of the Left in Canada despite all the Trot and ML sect wannabes. Even the old CP cuddled up to and was formitive in the development of the NDP out of the CCF.

An interesting interview in the Monthly Review online is with the American emigre Canadian Marxist academic Michael Lebowitz who is now living in Venezeula. With his wife they are active in the Bolivarian movement there, as well as building international solidarity links to support the Chavez government.

Michael is one of the more accessible Marxists, who I have had the pleasure of cooresponding with by email, and far from being just an academic he has remained an activist.

Completing Marx's Project: An Interview with Michael A. Lebowitz
by Mark Fischer

Michael A. LebowitzMichael A. Lebowitz, the author of Beyond Capital: Marx's Political Economy of the Working Class, argues that Capital, taken alone, is one-sided, given Marx's intention to also write a book on wage-labor. The incompleteness of Marx's work has helped produce a left whose theory is distorted and characterized by economism and programmatic narrowness. I spoke to the comrade in Venezuela, where he currently lives. He began with a description of his personal evolution as a communist.

Last, very last, really, last chance

The congenital idiots behind the kidnapping and hostage taking of the Christian Peacekeeper Team in Iraq who have been silent since their first death threat came and went in November have issued another last, final, no really, we mean it this time, very last, no we are not kidding, give in to our impossible unrealistic demands or else, threat to kill their hostages. 'Last chance' for Iraq hostages

Now these guys who are unknown to anyone else in the 'know' like Hamas and Hizbollah, should know that they have ticked off the Muslim world and if they carry through on their death threats it ain't US and Iraqi forces that hunts them down like the dogs they are, but the aforesaid H&H. So give it up and let the peacekeepers go.

Out of Print Download it for Free

Doug Henwood the left wing economist and lurking debunker of neo-liberalism and what he calls globalbalony, whose Left Business Observer is a must read, and is linked in my left hand sidebar, has offered his first book, Wallstreet for free.

Yep Verso publishers the publishing arm of New Left Review, a left wing Capitalist enterprise which overcharges for its books, (they limit their readership to well heeled academics) has put his book OP. Out of Print.

So Doug ever clever at marketing, better than NLR or Verso, has put it online for free download. Yep free. Of course he does invite donations, but I would suggest a subscription to his Left Business Observer would be a good bet.

This is a damn fine read for those who waited for the Left to finally criticise neo-liberalism and the junk bond casino capitalism of the Reagan, Clinton, Bush years. And waited, and waited until they all turned into Tony Blair.

Wall Street was first published in hardcover by Verso in 1997, and in paperback in 1998. Since Verso chose not to reprint it when it went out of stock, the rights reverted to the author in March 2005.

It's now available for free download on the web, under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs license. It may be recirculated freely for noncommercial use only. No alterations are allowed, and the author must be credited.

The book is a definitive overview of the financial markets and their economic and political role.

The file is in Acrobat 5.0 format and is 1.1 megabytes in size.

The author made less than $10,000 on this book for six years of work, even though it sold over 20,000 copies. So please consider a contribution here (via Paypal). If you prefer the old-fashioned way, you can mail a check (payable to Left Business Observer) to Doug Henwood, LBO, 38 Greene St - 4th fl, New York NY 10013-2505.

Klein My Way Healthcare Reform

It is known in Alberta as the 'Third Way, for medicare reform. But in reality it should be called Ralph Kleins My Way or the Highway medicare reform.

I am not the only one concerned about the Klein Government announcement this week that he will challenge the Canada Health Act with his long awaited Third Way reforms that will supposedly be introduced into the next sitting of the Legislature in February.

This will be six years after the passage of
Bill 11 which opened the door to private health care in Alberta. A bill which saw mass spontaneous demonstrations at the Legislature, some of the largest ever, attempts to take over the Leg.

Despite all that and a continued fight against the privatization of health care, and despite numerous costly studies by the Klein government on how to privatize, studies which continued to show it was a DUMB idea, ah well now Ralph can push ahead with little or no opposition from Ottawa. Or so he thinks.

Blogging Tory CIVITANTENSIS says its Deja Vu all over again, and wonders why the PC caucus unanimously approved it. Well probably they didn't, since Ralph has lied before about caucus unaniminity. CIVITANTENSIS also wonders why Ralph is challenging Stephen Harper over this.

Well thats simple; in Alberta it doesn't matter the government in power in Ottawa, they are all 'Eastern Bastards' to good old Klein. Opps except Harper is from Calgary. Good point that. Now we will see who is loyal to Harper and the Conservatives and who is loyal to King Ralph and his Party of Calgary.

Calvert fears Klein's reforms

"I have never quite understood the specifics of what the Third Way is,'' Calvert said. "If the Third Way finds itself to be in violation of the Canada Health Act -- the principles and values expressed in the Canada Health Act -- then I oppose any violation of that Act, its principles and its values, anywhere in Canada.''

The Alberta premier was also quoted as saying he believes the Canada Health Act, designed to help the federal government ensure the province and territories adhere to the principles of a free and universal publicly funded health system, should be amended in the future.

Klein said he and Prime Minister-designate Stephen Harper "are on the same wavelength'' and the federal leader promised during a brief conversation with Klein on Thursday to respect areas of provincial jurisdiction.

Calvert stressed the role of the federal government is to ensure the Canada Health Act's principles and values are being adhered so that Canadians can be confident health care will be provided no matter where they live or what is available in their wallet.

"That is the role of a national government and I would look to Mr. Harper's government to maintain that role,'' he said.

Union Free State Capitalism

Neo-liberal state capitalism is not nationalized industry operated by the state, instead its the state funding of private capitalism.

In this case it's the Nova Scotia government funding the French Multinational Michelin which proudly proclaims itself 'Union Free'.

For Nova Scotias decades of investment, over $80 million dollars ,one would expect that workers who pay the taxes to support Michelin would have the right to unionize. But no such luck under neo-liberal state capitalism the state puts impediments in the way of unionizing.

Union at the gate, but Michelin to pump millions into Nova Scotia ... CBC News

Organizing the Michelin workers has been a tough struggle for unions, due largely to a law known as the Michelin bill requiring activists to organize workers at the entire organization in the province, rather than on a plant-by-plant basis. The Canadian Auto Workers have tried repeatedly to unionize despite the law, with the last attempt collapsing five years ago.

Usually it's he who pays the piper that calls the tune. But not with neo-liberal state capitalism, it's the government that gives the carrots; tax breaks and investment capital, and business that carries the big stick; threats to relocate refusal to accept unionization, environmental restrictions, regulations, etc.

Nova Scotia will spend another $10.8 million to back Michelin's expansion plans in Waterville. The company says this means 75 new jobs.

Wow what a deal. That works out to an investment of $133,333,333 per job.

Bait and Switch

Here is the Canadian corporate capitalist version of bait and switch. Same thing happened when Maple Leaf closed their Gainers plant in Edmonton and a plant in Brampton to open one up in Manitoba.

Hog plant still on Winnipeg Sun -
Plans to build a new pork-processing plant in Winnipeg aren't being turfed in spite of closures of a similar swine slaughterhouse in Quebec. Olymel plant closing a shock for town Montreal Gazette

Well it shouldn't be surprise since in both the case of Maple Leaf Foods and now Olymel the union involved was UFCW. In both these cases UFCW advised workers to strike, and in losing the strikes ended up losing the jobs as the companies declared plants redundant and moved.

Yet with the relocation of the plants, UFCW retains unionized members. And union dues. It's collusion between the bosses and this yellow rat union. They are no better than CLAC whom they compete with in attempting to control workers in the agribusiness industry in Canada.

Time for a real workers union in retail and wholesale agribusiness in Canada not a yellow business union. Time for an autonomous worker controlled union, not a branch plant of an American business union.

While none of this story is on the UFCW website, Olymel provides us with an overview of the sellout of the workers in Quebec.

Opportunism has a name

Gee wasn't that Federal Election only six days ago. It's barely cold. And already one newly elected MP has turned his eyes to greener pastures.

Pallister to return to Manitoba, explore PC leadership options

No sooner was he elected as a Conservative MP then he announces he plans to quit.
If he likes the direction of the winds of change blowing in Manitoba. Uh huh, wait a minute the Conservative leadership race in Manitoba was announced some time ago wasn't it. Yep it was.

And on election night when asked about his intentions
Pallister squelches rumours he’s after Manitoba Tory leadership

Can you spell opportunism? P A L L I S T E R

Why even the Blogging Tories are stunned.
This is wrong

All I can say is Go Pallister Go.

That would leave Harper with 123 MP's and a byelection.

There Is Only One Liberal Leader

Frank McKenna and John Manley have bowed out, Stephane Dion is playing coy. Sheila Copps has another job. Belinda is pondering it. But the fix is in. The Liberals do not have leadership contests they have royal accension and crowings with laurels of the the victor.

So please all you Liberal Bloggers, and those Blogging Tories, who are given to speculation as to who the new Liberal Party Leader will be.

Stop before you hurt yourselves. There is only one leader for the party
.

It was a foregone conclusion, why speculate. It is Michael Igantieff. Now shut up and lets get on with the coronation.

Intelligent designs

If Paul Martin, the current prime minister and Liberal leader, loses on Monday, and Ignatieff hangs on and wins his constituency, he will be very well placed for a leadership contest. "There's no doubt about it. He's going to be one of the Liberal stars, and they're looking for a star," says Aileen McCabe, a parliamentary correspondent in Ottawa for the CanWest News Service. "With Trudeau, there was a glamour to it, and we haven't had much glamour since."

Ignatieff’s path to the top takes the long way
Canada asks Ignatieff: Are you one of us?

Mr Ignatieff had been widely tipped as a future Liberal leader after his surprise entry into the fray. That might explain his willingness to trade his chair in human rights at Harvard University for a backwater in western Toronto, a mixed district of wealthy mansions, poor housing estates and big eastern European communities.

The great bright hope
The idea of Ignatieff’s return to Canada seemed simple enough back in the spring of 2004, when a group of influential Liberal activists - lawyers, businessmen and others - met one night on the porch of Alfred Apps, a Toronto lawyer and party veteran, to discuss the state of the nation. Over some soggy Caesar salad, one of the businessmen, Rocco Rossi, mentioned Michael Ignatieff, whom he had seen giving a captivating lecture on the future of the Liberal imagination at the University of Toronto. “That man could be prime minister one day,” he said. The others agreed.

Oh and did I mention he is the Toronto Star's fave politico. So there, thats all done but the TV show; Liberal Leadership Idol.

Ignatieff says he'll deal with Liberal `mess'

Michael Ignatieff admits the Liberal government's "failings" and tells a voter he'll take a shovel to Ottawa to "try to clean up the mess" if he's elected as MP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore.The former Harvard professor is using his rookie status to bluntly criticize the multi-million-dollar Quebec sponsorship scandal as he campaigns to keep the riding, held by Jean Augustine since 1993, in Liberal hands as voters express a desire for change.

Ignatieff's defeat would be our loss
Toronto Star, Canada - 2 Jan 2006
Whatever they do to Liberals across the country, voters in Toronto's Etobicoke-Lakeshore should rally to Michael Ignatieff. Why? ...
