Nike's women workers - invisible no more; Young Worker.org; Instagram; TikTok
It's been a busy week for us and, unusually, there are 4 things we need to talk about.
First of all, Nike. We've been asked to share this message by our friends at Global Labor Justice - I hope that many of you will do your part in this fantastic campaign:
Pledge now to stand with women workers making Nike gear! Nike and other big fashion brands have built a business model that depends on the workers who make their products being invisible - but now over 1,000 mostly young women garment workers in Asia are coming forward publicly for the first time with a message to Nike! These workers know the risk of standing up to powerful companies and authoritarian systems, yet they are coming out of the shadows like never before to demand that Nike transform its supply chain to protect workers’ human rights and pay living wages. Sign the pledge to share a message to Nike with 1,000 photos of garment workers in March 2025. And ask members of your organization to take the pledge too! Together, we will make sure more than 1,000 people share the image, tagging key people in and around Nike. Sign here.
Second, young workers have a new home on the web - check it out. We're very pleased to launch a brand-new website, youngworker.org. It's packed with the latest news about young workers and their struggles around the world. If you're a young worker and want to be part of this, sign up to be a LabourStart volunteer correspondent, here.
Third, are you on Instagram? We are now and we'd like to invite you to join us there. Check out our newly-revived Instagram page here.
And finally, TikTok workers in Turkey need our solidarity right now. If you didn't sign up to support the campaign last week, here's a reminder -- and thanks!
Workers on a picket line in Turkey need our help and support right now.
The Canadian technology company Telus provides services to TikTok and other major corporations in its operations in Turkey.
But their workers are suffering from low wages and psychologically exhausting working conditions. Performance targets are constantly rising, there is no job security, and arbitrary dismissals are taking place.
Telus workers have unionised to demand a collective bargaining agreement. In response, the company started firing union representatives and changed its legal status to hinder union activities.
Workers, who are now on the picket line in front of the Telus office in Izmir, are demanding better working conditions, recognition of their union rights, and the reinstatement of their colleagues who were dismissed.
At their request, we have launched an online campaign in partnership with UNI Global Union, USW Canada and two Turkish unions.
Our goal is to send the strongest possible message to Telus -- to flood their inboxes with our messages of protest and solidarity.

Last week, we did a really great short podcast interview with with Kıvanç Eliaçık, Director of the International Relations Department for the Turkish national trade union centre DISK.
Kıvanç talked about the struggle of Telus workers in Izmir and also more broadly about Turkish workers' fight for their rights and for justice.
Listen to it here.
Please share this message with your friends, family and fellow union members.
Thank you!
