Says terror groups working in the country

US Vice-President Kamala Harris, during her maiden meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has “suo moto” referred to Pakistan's role in terrorism, saying that there were terror groups working in the country and asked Islamabad to take action so that it does not impact on America and India's security.

Prime Minister Modi held the meeting with Vice-President Harris at the White House on Thursday during which they decided to further cement the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed global issues of common interest, including threats to democracy, Afghanistan and the Indo-Pacific. “When the issue of terrorism came up, the Vice President suo moto referred Pakistan's role in that regard (of terrorism),” Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla told reporters when asked if the issue of Pakistan's role in terrorism came up during her meeting with Prime Minister Modi.

According to Shringla, Harris said that there were terror groups that were working in Pakistan. “She asked Pakistan to take action so that this will not impact on US security and that of India. She agreed with the Prime Minister's briefing on the fact of cross border terrorism, and the fact that India has been a victim of terrorism for several decades now and on the need to rein in, and closely monitor Pakistan's support for such terrorist groups,” Shringla said.

Harris said that it is incumbent on the two nations to protect democracies in the best interests of people of the two countries. “As democracies around the world are under threat, it is imperative that we defend democratic principles and institutions within our respective countries and around the world. And that we maintain what we must do to strengthen democracies at home and it is incumbent on our nations to of course protect democracies in the best interests of people of our countries,” she said.

Their meeting comes a day ahead of the maiden bilateral meeting between Modi and President Joe Biden and the Quad Leaders' Summit at the White House on Friday.

Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Vice President Kamala Harris met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, becoming the highest-ranking U.S. official of Indian heritage to welcome the prime minister.

Modi hailed the election of Harris, whose mother was born in India, as "an important and historic event" describing her as "the source of inspiration for so many people across the world."

"President [Joe] Biden and yourself took up the leadership of the United States in a very challenging atmosphere, challenging times, but within a very short period of time you have had many achievements to your credit," Modi said.

He praised the United States for taking very important initiatives on COVID-19 and climate change.

Harris responded by hailing India's commitment to democracy as she declared that "democracies around the world are under threat" and the United States and its allies must work to defend them.

"I know from personal experience and from my family of the commitment of the Indian people to democracy, and the work that needs to be done, we can begin to imagine, and then actually achieve our vision for democratic principles and institutions," she said.

Harris also noted that India was a "vital source" of vaccines for other countries at the start of the pandemic, while the United States, in turn, provided support to India as it experienced a surge in cases.

Earlier in the day, Harris met with Ghana's president, Nana Akufo-Addo, where she said the United States will send an additional 1.3 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine to the country in coming weeks.

"None of us have been immune to the ravages of the pandemic," she said. "We recognize our shared responsibility to collaborate, to share resources to not only continue to address the effects of COVID-19, but to prepare for the next pandemics."

Akufo-Addo added that Ghana hopes to vaccinate 20 million people -- two-thirds of its population -- by the end of the year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described US Vice President Kamala Harris as a "source of inspiration" for people around the world and expressed confidence that India-US bilateral relations will touch new heights under her and President Joe Biden's leadership.

The Prime Minister was sitting in a joint press appearance with Harris at the White House on Friday ahead of their bilateral meeting.

"You are being elected as the Vice President of America has been such an important and historic event. You are the source of inspiration for so many people around the world," Modi said.

Kamala Harris, 56, is the first-ever person of Indian origin to be elected as the vice-president of the United States of America.

Her biography on the White House website states that Harris is also the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to be elected Vice President, as was the case with multiple other offices she has held.

"I am so confident that under President Joe Biden and your leadership, our bilateral relationship will touch new heights," the prime minister said.

Modi also extended an invitation to Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff to visit India.

"Continuing on your journey of victory, Indians would also want you to continue that in India and wait for you to come to India and therefore, I extend to you an invitation to visit India," he said.

Recalling his conversation with Harris in June during the second wave of the pandemic in India, Modi said, "A few months ago, we had an opportunity to talk to each other over the phone. We had a detailed discussion at that time and the way you spoke to me so warmly and naturally, I will always remember that."

"It was a very difficult time. India was confronted with the second wave of the pandemic but like a family, the sense of kinship and so warmly you extended a helping hand."

"The words that you chose when you spoke to me, I will always remember that and I would like to thank you from the botoom of my heart," he said.

"Like a true friend, you had given a message of cooperation and full of sensitivity and immediately we found that the US government, corporate sector and the Indian community all came together to help India," he added.

Harris was born to two immigrants a Black father from Jamaica Donald Harris, and an Indian mother Shyamala Gopalan, acancer researcher and civil rights activist from Chennai.
