Trumpian tirade

DONALD Trump’s address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday was part comical theatre, part chilling warning to the world that the old international order — which the US itself helped build — is dying.

The American president used the august international platform to recycle conspiracy theories and highlight far-right talking points, along with taking a verbal sledgehammer to the UN itself. He blasted mass migration, saying that the UN was creating problems and “funding an assault on Western countries” by supporting migrants. Mr Trump referred to climate change as the “greatest con job ever” and warned nations to stay away from “this green scam”. As for the UN’s peacemaking role, or lack of it, Mr Trump asked “what is the purpose of the United Nations”, adding that the forum only offered “empty words”. He was also critical of states recognising Palestinian statehood, terming it a “reward” for Hamas.

Refuting each of Mr Trump’s ill-considered assertions at the UNGA requires far more space than is available in these columns. Briefly, it should be shocking that the leader of the world’s foremost economic and military power should turn MAGA talking points critical of the ‘globalist elite’ into key arguments of his address.

However, little is shocking when it comes to Mr Trump. His climate denialism is dangerous, especially for countries like Pakistan, which are lurching from one climate crisis to another. It is also disturbing that he chooses to scapegoat migrants for destroying Western civilisation. He should remember that many Western countries, led by his own, have helped destroy states in the Middle East and Africa through regime change, which has fuelled the migration crisis.

His criticism of the UN for failing to prevent conflict may not be off the mark, but again, the global body is only the sum of its parts. When powerful member states, such as the US, paralyse the UN through the Security Council, is the global institution alone to be blamed for inaction? Moreover, it is the unilateralism of the Western bloc that contributed to the weakening of the UN

Speaking later with leaders of Muslim states, including Pakistan, Mr Trump suggested that these countries could help end the Gaza war. However, the American leader’s emphasis seemed to be on getting the Israeli hostages back, not on ending the genocide of Palestinians.

While the Arab and Muslim states should be leading an economic and diplomatic boycott of Israel for its crimes in Gaza, arguably, only one state has the key to halting the Zionist aggression: the US. If America, as well as its Western allies, stopped funding Tel Aviv and shipping deadly weapons to it, and refrained from defending Israel at every international forum, the Zionist regime could be forced to rethink its bloody and criminal strategy.

Fact-checking Donald Trump's Europe claims in UN speech

Trump's speech was littered with claims relating to immigration in Europe, the climate crisis and Russia's war in Ukraine.

United States President Donald Trump made a string of misleading and false claims during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 23 September 2025, including many aimed at the European Union and European countries in general.

To determine where the facts lie, Euroverify has taken a look at Trump's assertions.

On European immigration

Addressing the UNGA, Trump attacked the whole continent of Europe for what he called "the unmitigated immigration disaster."

"It's time to end the failed experiment of open borders. You have to end it now. I can tell you, I'm really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell," the president said.

According to Eurostat data, the share of non-EU citizens in all 27 member states totalled 6.4% of the overall EU population in 2024, while 9.9% of the population was born outside the bloc.

Compare that with the US, whose foreign-born or immigrant population stood at 15.8% of the total in January 2025.

Trump aimed at illegal migration in particular, but statistics show that this is actually decreasing in the EU.

Frontex, the bloc's border agency, reported 239,000 irregular border crossings in 2024, down by 25% compared to the year before. The numbers continued to fall during the first seven months of 2025.

The EU is also implementing a common Pact on Migration and Asylum, designed to tighten its borders and asylum procedures.

It's also disingenuous to paint legal migration in a wholly negative light when statistics repeatedly show that it can help destination countries drive development and innovation, fill gaps in the labour market, and address the challenges created by ageing populations, in addition to cultural and economic enrichment.

'London wants to go to Sharia law'

In a similar vein to his attacks on immigration in Europe, Trump made the bold—and false—claim that the city of London wants to "go to sharia law."

These comments from Trump build on long-standing conspiracy theories that allege that London's first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, wants to convert the city to Islamic fundamentalism.

Sharia means the correct "path" or "way" in Arabic, and is the legal system of Islam.

Sharia law is subject to interpretation, and Sharia councils do exist in the UK, ruling on issues such as marriage and divorce.

Sharia law has been deemed controversial as it can conflict with modern secular law. However, the decisions Sharia councils take are not legally binding under UK law.

Meanwhile, many Muslim-majority countries around the world incorporate Sharia law into their national legal systems.

London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, responded to Trump's claims by stating, "people are wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multi-cultural, progressive and successful city, that means I appear to be living rent-free inside Donald Trump's head."

Khan also said Trump had proven he was "racist, sexist, misogynistic and Islamophobic."

False claims about Khan and his plans to promote—and prioritise—Islam in London repeatedly surface online.

For instance, a false story claiming that the London mayor planned to build 40,000 new homes designated solely to Muslims, to be near mosques and halal shops, gained traction across social media in September.

In reality, Khan did pledge to build 40,000 new council homes in an interview with Muslim broadcaster the Islam Channel, but he did not state that they would be for Muslims only.

Another fabricated quote was attributed to Khan in 2020, which stated that London was trialling Sharia law in three boroughs.

How many Ukrainian soldiers are killed per week?

Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine are "killing anywhere from 5,000 to 7,000 young soldiers, mostly soldiers on both sides, every single week," as Moscow's war of aggression rages on.

Although Trump has repeatedly peddled the claim that 5,000 soldiers are killed per week, it is difficult to establish the exact number of soldiers who have been killed on both sides since the advent of the war. This is largely due to a lack of reliable data and sources for the data quoted by the US President.

According to experts, Trump's 5,000 to 7,000 benchmark is higher than the actual number of soldier deaths, with multiple fact-checking outlets estimating the real number of Russian and Ukrainian military casualties to stand around 1,850 per week.

This figure is calculated based on Ukrainian military deaths, according to estimates that stated there had been 80,000 casualties by September 2024, as well as estimates of 250,000 Russian military deaths.

Although Euroverify was not able to independently verify how many Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, we have collated the available data to build a picture of what we know.

According to the available data, more Russian soldiers than Ukrainians have been killed since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In April 2025, the BBC's Russian service and independent Russian outlet Mediazona identified the names of 100,000 dead Russian soldiers who had been killed since February 2022.

When BBC Russia and Mediazona incorporated unidentified killed soldiers into this tally, the number of dead Russian soldiers rose to between 158,000 and 229,000 between February 2022 and April 2025.

Meanwhile, in June, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies estimated that as many as 250,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in Ukraine.

As for Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action in February 2025, adding that 390,000 soldiers had been wounded in action since the advent of the war.

However, in September 2024, the Wall Street Journal estimated that around 80,000 soldiers had been killed since the start of the war, which has since been refuted by Zelenskyy.

Trump on climate change

The US president slammed efforts to combat global warming, particularly those in Europe, calling climate change "the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world."

"Europe loses more than 175,000 people to heat death every year because the costs are so expensive you can't turn on an air conditioner," Trump said. "What is that all about? That's not Europe. That's not the Europe that I love and know. All in the name of pretending to stop the global warming hoax."

A recent study published in the medical journal Nature Medicine said that more than 62,700 people died in Europe from heat-related causes in 2024, and that more than 181,000 people died from complications related to the heat in the summer months between 2022 and 2024.

The mortality rate rose by 23% between June and September 2024 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to the study.

recent report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) stated that Europe is warming faster than the global average, with the global mean temperature rise standing as high as 1.28°C, and Europe's temperature rise reaching up to 2.26°C.

This creates a dilemma for European governments, which are urgently seeking ways to keep the populace cool without contributing to the global warming that is exacerbating heat-related deaths, such as through the excessive use of air conditioning.

As things stand, access to air conditioning in Europe is among the lowest in the world, according to the World Resources Institute. Only one in five (19%) households in Europe had air-conditioning units in 2022, which is far behind the likes of North America (76%), the Asia-Pacific (47%), and even well below the world average of 37%.

Europe historically needed little air conditioning due to mild climates and heat-retaining buildings, but rising temperatures have made summers increasingly unbearable, according to recent reports.

With Europe now warming twice as fast as the global average, the demand for air conditioning is a new and urgent reality.

It's also been refuted time and time again by the scientific community that global warming is not a hoax, that it is caused by humanity and that it poses a significant risk to the world.

Trump calls escalator, other alleged tech malfunctions at the UN 'triple sabotage'

MEGLOMANIAC CLAIMS ITS ALL ABOUT HIM

Following Tuesday's "Escalatorgate", in which US President Donald Trump faced an escalator malfunction and alleged sound system and teleprompter issues at the UN General Assembly, Trump announced on Wednesday that the Secret Service would be investigating. UN officials responded by denying any foul play and noted that the White House handled Trump's teleprompter, and that the sound system allows for simultaneous translation for people in the auditorium.

Trump demanded an investigation on Wednesday into what he called “triple sabotage” after experiencing escalator, teleprompter and sound system issues as he addressed the United Nations.

The UN has said the incidents that happened while Trump was at its headquarters in New York on Tuesday were accidental, partly blaming them on White House staff.

But in a long, angry social media post, Trump described the string of mishaps as “very sinister", called for people to be arrested and said the Secret Service was also probing.

“This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

“I’m sending a copy of this letter to the Secretary-General, and I demand an immediate investigation. No wonder the United Nations hasn’t been able to do the job that they were put in existence to do.”

Footage showed the 79-year-old president and First Lady Melania Trump stepping on to the escalator at UN headquarters on Tuesday before it stopped with a lurch, forcing them to walk up.

Then, as he began his speech, he noted his teleprompter was not working.

He spent much of the rest of the address attacking the world body, accusing it of funding illegal migration that was turning Western countries into “hell” and failing to support his peace efforts in Gaza and Ukraine.

While Trump struck a mostly joking tone about the escalator at the time, his mood hardened a day later.

“A REAL DISGRACE took place at the United Nations yesterday. Not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” he wrote.

Trump said the escalator stop could have been a “real disaster".

“It’s amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward on to the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first,” he said.

Trump then complained that his teleprompter for the speech was “stone cold dark” for the first 15 minutes, and that the sound in the UN auditorium was “completely off".

The US president called for the security tapes of the escalator to be preserved, adding: “The Secret Service is involved.”

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric on Tuesday issued a statement addressing the uproar, saying a videographer from the US delegation “may have inadvertently triggered the safety function” on the escalator.

“Regarding the teleprompter, we have no comment since the teleprompter for the US president is operated by the White House,” he said.

A Secret Service official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency was “looking into what the UN said to corroborate it".

Reached for comment after Trump’s post on Wednesday, a UN official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed to Dujarric’s earlier statement.

Regarding the alleged sound issues, the official said: “The sound system was designed to allow people at their seats to hear speeches translated into six different languages through earpieces.”

Mike Waltz, the newly appointed US ambassador, said on X that he had formally demanded the “complete results” of the UN’s investigation of the escalator incident, as well as a “detailed explanation of the teleprompter failure’s root cause, along with immediate plans to implement robust preventive measures".

“The United States will not tolerate threats to our security or dignity at international forums. We expect swift co-operation and decisive action,” Waltz added.

'EscalatorGate' escalates and goes viral as MAGA call out sabotage of UN escalator

UN escalatorgate escalates: Trump demands investigation as MAGA call out sabotage

Donald Trump has called it a “REAL DISGRACE”. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt says the US Secret Service are looking into it. MAGA supporters are up in arms. Why? Because of the minor inconvenience caused by an escalator breaking down at the UN. Here's why #EscalatorGate is trending.

When Nathan Ames patented the first moving staircase in 1859, little did he know that 166 years later the escalator would become the latest fixation of Trump and his MAGA base.

At the United Nations general assembly this week, Donald Trump delivered a sprawling speech that often felt like experimental free form jazz. Except the avant-garde approach to the music genre requires a great deal of improvisational talent.

When he wasn’t describing climate change as the "greatest con job ever", he was singling out how European nations are “going to hell” over their migration policies or waxing lyrical about his red hat merch.

But the moment that caught people's attention was when he broke from his prepared remarks to bemoan a defective teleprompter and the now-viral moment when he and first lady Melania Trump were on a malfunctioning escalator.

“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle,” said Trump.

Indeed, the escalator did suddenly stop as Donald and Melania Trump stepped onto it, leading to them having to walk up the stairs.

Trump posted about the harrowing experience on Truth Social, writing that it was “amazing that Melania and I didn’t fall forward on to the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first.”

In his legnthy chronicle of the “REAL DISGRACE”, Trump made reference to a report in the Times of London newspaper on Sunday saying that UN staff members had joked that they would turn off the escalators and “tell him they ran out of money.” This would have been a jab at the sweeping US funding cuts.

Trump has demanded an “immediate investigation” into whether UN staff sabotaged his attendance, with the Leader of the Free World calling the teleprompter failure and the escalator SNAFU “very sinister events”. He added that the “people that did it should be arrested!”.

Donald Trump's post

As overblown as the presidential reaction was to a malfunctioning piece of equipment, the Trump administration and the MAGA base doubled down.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House spokeswoman, told Fox News that the Secret Service was investigating allegations that Trump had been deliberately sabotaged by UN staff.

“It doesn’t look like a coincidence to me,” she told Fox News. “And I know that we have people, including the United States Secret Service, who are looking into this to try to get to the bottom of it.”

Good luck, as that particular escalator was supposed to go up, and not to the bottom.

Leavitt then suggested on X that this was an intentional act of protest and that someone could have intentionally halted the escalator.

Where’s Hercule Poirot when you need him?

Then again, even the famous fictional detective would probably come to the conclusion that the UN have better things to do with their time than investigate a malfunctioning escalator under the guise of sabotage suspicions.

Still, UN officials took it seriously and have said the escalator's built-in safety mechanism had been “inadvertently triggered” by a videographer working for the Trump administration and that the teleprompter was operated by the White House rather than the UN.

So, the call was coming from inside the (American) house after all.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed that a videographer from the US delegation who ran ahead of him may have triggered the stop mechanism at the top of the escalator.

He said: “In an effort to document their arrival, a videographer from the US delegation stepped on to the escalator ahead of the president and first lady. As the videographer, who was travelling backwards up the escalator reached the top, the first lady, followed by President Trump, each mounted the steps at the bottom. At that moment, the escalator came to a stop.”

His statement continued: “Our technician, who was at the location, reset the escalator as soon as the delegation had climbed up to the second floor. A subsequent investigation, including a readout of the machine’s central processing unit, indicated that the escalator had stopped after a built-in safety mechanism on the comb step was triggered at the top of the escalator.”

“The safety mechanism is designed to prevent people or objects accidentally being caught and stuck in or pulled into the gearing. The videographer may have inadvertently triggered the safety function described above.”

Still, MAGA are convinced there’s a wider conspiracy here – leading to the trending hashtag #EscalatorGate.

Still, some found a silver lining...

Late-night talk show hosts had a field day with the moment, pointing out the lunacy of overblown conspiracy theories.

“My favourite part of that clip (of Trump stuck on the escalator) is trump looking around like he doesn’t know what to do next,” said Seth Meyers. “We all know that when an escalator breaks, we just use it as stairs. But when Trump see a broken escalator, he turns to Melania and says, ‘We live here now’.”

Referring to Leavitt’s comments on Fox News, in which she blamed “UN globalist staffers” plotting to set up Trump, Meyers quipped: “I’ve heard a lot about these globalists over the years, but I didn’t realise their M.O. was to just burn you with soft pranks.”

Jimmy Kimmel, who is now back on the air despite Trump’s wishes, showed clips of Fox News host Jesse Watters saying: “They could have hurt the most beautiful first lady in American history.”

Kimmel said: “Just to recap: Trump will not release the Epstein files, but we will be doing a thorough and complete investigation into who stopped his escalator...”

As for The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper, he referred to the extensive Fox News coverage of escalatorgate and their repeated accusations of sabotage by asking: “Can you people please decide if Trump is the strongest man who has ever walked the Earth or a sickly child with hollow bird bones who will crumble if he walks up three stairs?”

No news on which one they’re picking, but suspicions of a shadowy UN cabal continue.

We really do live in the most unserious timeline, don’t we?

Record ratings for Jimmy Kimmel's return despite ABC affiliates refusing to air show

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has tripled its average ratings - despite about a quarter of ABC stations in the US not airing the show's return.

Jimmy Kimmel's return after a near weeklong suspension has resulted in the show’s highest ratings in a decade.

Disney-owned ABC confirmed the ratings boost, reporting that nearly 6.3 million people tuned in to the broadcast – a figure which does not include viewership from streaming services.

Typically, Jimmy Kimmel Live! gets about 1.4 to 1.8 million viewers each night on television.

As is often the case with late-night hosts' monologues, there was a larger audience online, with more than 15 million people watching Kimmel's opening remarks on YouTube by Wednesday evening. ABC says more than 26 million people watched Kimmel's return on social media, including YouTube.

These record numbers come despite the blackouts in many cities like Washington, Seattle, Nashville and St. Louis. Roughly a quarter of ABC stations not airing the show, with Nexstar and Sinclair corporations still refusing to bring Kimmel back.

A spokesman for Nexstar said yesteday that Kimmel will continue to be preempted from its stations while the company evaluates his show.

“We are engaged in productive discussions with executives at the (ABC parent) Walt Disney Co., with a focus on ensuring the program reflects and respects the diverse interests of the communities we serve,” said Nexstar.

And the president they serve, as Kimmel’s suspension has triggered debates over free speech in the US and shown quite to what extent Trump is trying to reshape media as he likes it – ie: without any criticism whatsoever.

This has attracted the attention of US senators, who said they wanted to investigate the relationship between the affiliates and Trump's administration.

“If Nexstar or Sinclair traded the censorship of a critic of the administration for official acts by the Trump administration, your companies are not only complicit in an alarming trampling of free speech but also risk running afoul of anti-corruption law,” Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, Ron Wyden and Chris Van Hollen wrote to the companies.

Yesterday, another group of senators led by California Democrat Adam Schiff said they wanted to question FCC Chairman Brendan Carr about “implicit threats” made to Disney over Kimmel.

A "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" crew member brings in a banner before the taping of the show at the Hollywood Blvd studio AP Photo

During Kimmel’s return show, the host said it "was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man". He also accused Carr of "mob tactics" - and satirized Carr and the FCC in a skit featuring Robert De Niro.

Kimmel also criticised Trump, who was critical of Kimmel’s reinstatement, saying: "Our leader celebrates people losing their livelihoods because he can't take a joke,"later adding that Trump’s actions were "un-American".

For now, it seems that Trump’s plan to use the apparatus of the federal government to pressure companies to reshape the media and public dialogue has spectacularly backfired. Until his next pressure move, that is, as he has openly called for Kimmel’s late-night colleagues Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers to also be taken off air.

Sean Penn says he’s ‘not surprised’ by Charlie Kirk shooting

The celebrated actor plays a US military officer with white supremacy on the brain in Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie, ‘One Battle After Another’.

Sean Penn has shared his thoughts on the shooting of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, who died on 10 September after he was shot during an outdoor speech at Utah Valley University.

Penn stars in the new Paul Thomas Anderson film One Battle After Another, in which he plays Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, a corrupt white supremacist military official hunting down the daughter (Chase Infiniti) of ex-revolutionaries (Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor).

When asked about the film’s cultural relevance, as the superb new drama is heavy with timely political subtext, the two-time Oscar winning actor and political activist said that he was “not surprised at all” by Kirk’s murder.

“Like a lot of people, I’ve been worrying that this kind of horror was moving towards coming into fashion,” he told Vanity Fair during an interview published yesterday but which took place just 24 hours after the shooting.

Penn added: “It’s disturbing enough that I would say I’m still processing it. And what its implications are.”

Sean Penn in 'One Battle After Another' Warner Bros. Pictures

Penn has never been shy about speaking his mind when it comes to political matters, and has regualrly criticized Donald Trump. This year, on an episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, the actor-director called Trump “the tough guy who never was.”

In the May episode, Penn and Theroux discussed the matter of Trump’s intelligence. Penn said: “What he values is so base. I won't equate that with intelligence. It's truly void of soul. And really - this is the other thing - it actively engages in cruelty often."

Penn is also a supporter of Ukraine, frequently visiting the country since Russia’s 2022 invasion and even presenting one of his Oscars to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In 2023, Superpower, a documentary Penn co-directed with Aaron Kaufman, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. The film profiles Zelenskyy’s atypical path to the presidency and his role as a war time president.

When asked whether he gravitates towards projects that speak to politics, Penn said: “E.L. Doctorow had a line: The responsibility of the artist is to know the time within which he lived. So somebody can make a period film, but in doing that, the good ones reflect something very current.”

He added, regarding One Battle After Another: “I think that this became exponentially more timely after production finished and we watched, kind of shaking our heads. It’s also a great thing that because he doesn’t have a conventional dependence on what satire is, the movie is malleable. It’s not dependent on being a far-fetched idea that makes us laugh. And now that some of it is not at all far-fetched it takes on a more full quality.”

Charlie Kirk’s death has prompted mourningoutrage and growing concern over free speech in the US.

Trump has blamed the “radical left” for Kirk’s death and threatened to go after liberal organizations or anyone who he feels are celebrating the activist’s death.

At Kirk’s public memorial service on Monday, Kirk’s widow said she forgave her husband’s killer. Trump, however, declared his “hate” for his opponents in a politically charged speech that has confirmed for many of his opponents that the president is politicising the death.

One Battle After Another is released in cinemas tomorrow. Stay tuned to Euronews Culture for the full review, also out tomorrow.

Magma Displacement Triggered Tens Of Thousands Of Earthquakes

September 25, 2025 0 Comments

By Eurasia Review

Tens of thousands of earthquakes shook the Greek island of Santorini and the surrounding area at the beginning of the year. Now, researchers from GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, together with international colleagues, have published a comprehensive geological analysis of the seismic crisis in the journal Nature.

The researchers integrated data from earthquake stations and ocean bottom instruments deployed at the Kolumbo underwater volcano 7 km away from Santorini and used a newly developed AI-based method for locating earthquakes. This enabled reconstructing the processes in the underground with unique detail, revealing that around 300 million cubic metres of magma rose from the deep crust and came to rest at a depth of around four kilometres below the ocean floor. During its ascent through the crust, the molten magma generated thousands of earthquakes and seismic tremors.
A seismically unstable region – geological background

Santorini is located in the eastern Mediterranean and forms part of the Hellenic volcanic arc, a highly active geological zone. This world-famous island group forms the rim of a caldera, which was created by a massive volcanic eruption around 3,600 years ago.

The active underwater volcano Kolumbo lies in the immediate vicinity. In addition, the region is crossed by several active geological fault zones, which is the result of the African Plate pushing north-east against the Hellenic Plate. The Earth’s crust beneath the Mediterranean region has broken up into several microplates that shift against each other, and in some cases subduct and melt, thus, sourcing volcanic activity.

Santorini has produced multiple eruptions is historic times, most recently in 1950. In 1956, two severe earthquakes occurred in the southern Aegean Sea, only 13 minutes apart, between Santorini and the neighbouring island of Amorgos. These had magnitudes of 7.4 and 7.2 respectively, triggering a tsunami.

The earthquake swarm that initiated in late January 2025 took place in exactly this region. During the crisis, more than 28,000 earthquakes were recorded. The strongest of these reached magnitudes of over 5.0. The severe shaking caused great public concern during the seismic crisis, partly because the cause was initially unclear, being potentially either tectonic or volcanic.

What happened underground? – Findings from the current study

The new study now shows that the earthquake swarm was triggered by the deep transport of magma. The chain of events had already begun in July 2024, when magma rose into a shallow reservoir beneath Santorini. This initially led to a barely noticeable uplift of Santorini by a few centimetres. At the beginning of January 2025, seismic activity intensified, and from the end of January, magma began to rise from the depths, accompanied by intense seismic activity. However, the seismic activity shifted away from Santorini over a distance of more than 10 kilometres to the northeast. During this phase, the foci of the quakes moved in several pulses from a depth of 18 kilometres upwards to a depth of only 3 kilometres below the seafloor. The high-resolution temporal and spatial analysis of the earthquake distribution, combined with satellite radio interferometry (InSAR), GPS ground stations and seafloor stations, made it possible to model the events.

Dr Marius Isken, geophysicist at the GFZ and one of the two lead authors of the study, says: “The seismic activity was typical of magma ascending through the Earth’s crust. The migrating magma breaks the rock and forms pathways, which causes intense earthquake activity. Our analysis enabled us to trace the path and dynamics of the magma ascent with a high degree of accuracy.”

As a result of the magma movement, the island of Santorini subsided again, which the authors interpret as evidence of a previously unknown hydraulic connection between the two volcanoes. Dr Jens Karstens, marine geophysicist at GEOMAR and also lead author of the study, explains: “Through close international cooperation and the combination of various geophysical methods, we were able to follow the development of the seismic crisis in near real time and even learn something about the interaction between the two volcanoes. This will help us to improve the monitoring of both volcanoes in the future.”
View from many perspectives – methods

Two factors in particular enabled the exceptionally detailed mapping of the subsurface. For one, an AI-driven method developed at the GFZ for the automatic evaluation of large seismic data sets. Secondly, GEOMAR had already deployed underwater sensors at the crater of the underwater volcano Kolumbo at the beginning of January as part of the MULTI-MAREX project. These sensors not only measured seismic signals directly above the reservoir, but also pressure changes resulting from the subsidence of the seabed by up to 30 centimetres during the intrusion of magma beneath Kolumbo.

Scientific research activity on Santorini is continuing despite the decline in seismic activity. The GFZ is conducting repeated gas and temperature measurements on Santorini, while GEOMAR currently has eight seabed sensor platforms in operation.

Prof. Dr Heidrun Kopp, Professor of Marine Geodesy at GEOMAR and project manager of MULTI-MAREX, says: “The joint findings were always shared with the Greek authorities in order to enable the fastest and most accurate assessment of the situation possible in the event of new earthquakes.” Co-author Prof. Dr Paraskevi Nomikou is Professor of Geological Oceanography at the University of Athens and works closely with the German partner institutes on the MULTI-MAREX project. She adds: “This long-standing cooperation made it possible to jointly manage the events at the beginning of the year and to analyse them so precisely from a scientific point of view. Understanding the dynamics in this geologically highly active region as accurately as possible is crucial for the safety and protection of the population.”
