Animal welfare services euthanized five of the nearly 100 cattle in distress removed from Warsaw property

Province says no charges have been laid in the ongoing inspection of the circumstances at the property

The Ministry of the Solicitor General’s animal welfare division says approximately 100 cattle in distress were removed from a property in Warsaw on the advice of a veterinarian after an inspection in December 2021.

On Thursday, Dec. 16, animal welfare officers, along with officers from the Peterborough County OPP, and several volunteers, attended the property at 1534 County Road 4, between Oke and Caves roads.

At least eight trailers loaded with cattle, ranging from calves to adults, were removed from the property.

According to Ministry of the Solicitor General spokesperson Brent Ross, the cattle were assessed by a veterinarian, given treatment where required, and then distributed to other locations in Ontario to ensure their well-being.

Further, Ross said no further animals were removed from the property, but five cattle were euthanized per the authorities given under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act.

At this time, Ross said no charges have been laid.

“Given there is an ongoing inspection into this matter, it would be inappropriate to provide additional detail,” he said.

While animal welfare officers removed the cattle on Dec. 16, the property owner stood and watched, telling Peterborough This Week, “I’m the guy that they’re stealing my cattle from.”

The owner, who did not give his name, said the group had been on his property all morning.

He said those responsible for taking his cattle think they’re right and he’s wrong.

“They’re crazy,” he added.
