Lebanese novelist Elias Khoury dies aged 76

Beirut (Lebanon) (AFP) – Novelist Elias Khoury, one of Lebanon's most renowned writers and a fervent advocate of the Palestinian cause, died on Sunday from illness aged 76, sources close to his family told AFP.

Khoury, who was born in 1948 to a Christian family in Beirut, died in the Lebanese capital where he had been hospitalised for months, the sources said.

Over several decades Khoury produced a large body of work in Arabic that touched on the themes of collective memory, war and exile, alongside writing for newspapers, teaching literature and editing a publication linked to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

Many of his books were translated into foreign languages including French, English, German, Hebrew and Spanish.

One of his best-known novels, "Gate of the Sun", tells the story of Palestinian refugees expelled from their homes in 1948 during the war that coincided with Israel's foundation.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven out or expelled from their homes during that war, in what Palestinians call the Nakba, or catastrophe in Arabic.

The novel was made into a film by Egyptian director Yousry Nasrallah.

Khoury also wrote about Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war in novels like "Little Mountain" and "Yalo".

A champion of the Palestinian cause since his youth, Khoury was co-managing editor of the PLO-linked Palestinian Affairs magazine from 1975 to 1979, together with poet Mahmoud Darwish.

Khoury also headed the cultural section of the now-defunct Lebanese newspaper As-Safir and the cultural supplement of the daily Annahar.

He taught literature at several US institutions including New York's prestigious Columbia University.

Khoury's ailing health in recent years did not stop him from writing, publishing articles reposted on his Facebook page from his hospital bed.

On July 16, he published an article titled "A Year of Pain", recounting his time bedridden in hospital and enduring "a life filled with pain, which stops only to herald in more pain".

He ended his piece by alluding to the Israel-Hamas war in the besieged Gaza Strip, which by then had raged on for more than nine months, triggered by the Palestinian group's October 7 attack.

"Gaza and Palestine have been brutally bombarded for almost a year now, but they stand steadfast and unshakable. A model from which I have learnt to love life every day," Khoury wrote.

Israelis rally to pressure government on hostage release

Tel Aviv (AFP) – Thousands of Israelis again took to the streets of Israel's commercial hub Tel Aviv on Saturday to press for a Gaza truce deal that could free dozens of hostages.

Weekly rallies in Tel Aviv throughout the war, which was triggered by Hamas's October 7 attack, have become more critical of the Israeli government since the military announced earlier this month that six dead captives had been recovered from a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accused by critics of stalling in truce negotiations and prolonging the war to appease far-right coalition partners, has said Hamas militants "executed" the six hostages by shooting them in the back of the head.

Netanyahu has also blamed Hamas leaders for rejecting terms of a possible truce and hostage release deal, while himself facing calls from Israeli critics to make concessions to secure the return of 97 people still held in Gaza, including 33 the military says are dead.

Actor Lior Ashkenazi told the crowd in Tel Aviv on Saturday that "there will be no redemption" if the government allows the Israeli captives to be "abandoned to murderers and rapists for coalition considerations".

"No one will agree to live under a broken leadership. Cry out, beloved land, for your leaders abandon you."

As in past weeks, relatives of captives addressed the crowd.

Eli Elbag, father of hostage Liri Elbag, said addressing his daughter: "It's been a year since I last kissed you, a year since I last laughed with you."

"We will continue to fight to bring everyone home," said the father.

Saturday's protest unfolded in the shadow of increasing cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanese group Hezbollah, a Hamas ally.

Shahar Mor, nephew of slain hostage Avraham Munder, said he feared the fight against Hezbollah would again distract leaders from the plight of the hostages.

"Their goal is to focus on the illusion of 'absolute victory' that is always just around the corner," said Mor.

But like during successive phases of intense fighting in Gaza over nearly a year of war, the "corner... always shifts according to specific interests," he said.

"Yesterday it was Rafah (in southern Gaza), tomorrow it will be Beirut."

The October 7 attack that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians, on the Israeli side, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures that include hostages killed in captivity.

Palestinians militants seized 251 hostages that day, scores of whom were released during a one-week truce in November.

Israel's retaliatory military offensive has killed at least 41,391 people in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to figures provided by the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The UN has acknowledged the figures as reliable.

New Zealand pilot freed in Indonesia after 19 months in rebel captivity

Timika (Indonesia) (AFP) – New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens has been released from captivity by rebels in Indonesia's restive Papua region and is in good health despite the 19-month ordeal, Indonesian and New Zealand authorities said Saturday.

Mehrtens, 38, was working for Indonesian airline Susi Air when he was snatched by rebels from the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) insurgent group at Papua's Nduga airport on February 7 last year.

A joint task force of police and military forces collected Mehrtens in a village in Nduga district early Saturday, before he was given medical and psychological checks and flown to the Papuan city of Timika, said the unit's head Faizal Ramadhani.

"Today I have been freed. I am very happy that shortly I will be able to go home and meet my family," Mehrtens told reporters earlier in Timika, speaking in Indonesian.

"Thank you for everybody who helped me today, so I can get out safely in a healthy condition."

Mehrtens arrived in capital Jakarta from Timika on Saturday evening where Hadi Tjahjanto, coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, told reporters Mehrtens had been handed over to New Zealand's ambassador.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters earlier said Mehrtens was "safe and well" and had been able to speak with his family.

"This news must be an enormous relief for his friends and loved ones," Peters added.

Mehrtens was providing vital air links and supplies to remote communities at the time of his abduction.

The task force released footage of an emotional Mehrtens taking a phone call from his family, with one unidentified loved one heard saying "hang in there".
Video addresses

His release came after intense diplomatic efforts by Wellington and Jakarta.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said Saturday that Jakarta had secured Mehrtens's freedom through negotiation, not force.

"We prioritised the safety of the pilot who was held hostage. It took a long process and I appreciate the authorities," he told reporters.

Rebels had demanded Indonesia recognise Papuan independence in return for his freedom.

A TPNPB spokesman, Sebby Sambom, said another faction of the rebel group agreed to a deal with the Indonesian government, accusing them of accepting a payment without providing evidence.

The rebels had at one point threatened to kill Mehrtens if talks were not forthcoming. The group had said foreign nationals were targets because their governments had ties with Indonesia.

In February 2023, TPNPB rebels set fire to a Susi Air plane and released five passengers, but held on to Mehrtens.

During his captivity in the Papuan countryside, the New Zealander made sporadic appearances on video, likely under duress, to address his family and his government.

The rebels said he was in good health throughout, but his appearance changed drastically over time, with the pilot becoming gaunt, long-haired and bearded in proof-of-life videos.

Mehrtens appeared in good physical condition in handout images published by Indonesian authorities on Saturday.

'Gentle man'

Mehrtens, a father of one, grew up in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

During his captivity, he was described by friends as a "kind and gentle man" who was helping Papuans by flying into remote areas not accessible by road and that many would not fly to, according to New Zealand media outlets.

Indonesia maintains a heavy military presence in resource-rich but underdeveloped Papua to quell the long-running separatist insurgency.

Rebel attacks in the region have risen in recent years and flying is the only way to reach remote mountainous areas there.

Another New Zealand pilot, 50-year-old Glen Malcolm Conning, was shot dead last month after landing in the region with two Indonesian health workers and two children, all of whom survived.

The former Dutch colony declared independence in 1961, but neighbouring Indonesia took control two years later, promising a referendum. In 1969, a thousand Papuans voted to integrate into Indonesia in a UN-backed vote.

Papuan independence activists regularly criticise the vote and call for fresh polls, but Jakarta says its sovereignty over Papua is supported by the United Nations.

France gets a more right-wing government after weeks of uncertainty

NO UNCERTAINTY,
THE LEFT WON AND ARE LOCKED OUT

The French presidential palace unveiled a long-awaited new government Saturday dominated by conservatives and centrists. It came more than two months after elections that produced a hung parliament and deepened political divisions as France grapples with growing financial and diplomatic challenges.

French President Emmanuel Macron named a new government led by Prime Minister Michel Barnier Saturday, marked by a shift to the right 11 weeks after an inconclusive parliamentary election.

The first major task for Barnier, appointed just over two weeks ago, will be to submit a 2025 budget plan addressing France's financial situation, which the prime minister this week called "very serious".

Conservative Barnier is best known internationally for leading the European Union's Brexit negotiations with the UK.

More recently, he has had the difficult job of submitting a cabinet for Macron's approval that has the best chance of surviving a no-confidence motion in parliament.

Tough talks on the distribution of the 39 cabinet posts continued right up to Saturday's official announcement, insiders said, with moments of high tension between the president and his prime minister.

Opposition politicians from the left have already announced they will challenge his government with a confidence motion.

In the July election, a left-wing bloc called the New Popular Front (NFP) won the most parliamentary seats of any political bloc, but not enough for an overall majority.

Macron argued that the left would be unable to muster enough support to form a government that would not immediately be brought down in parliament.

He turned instead to Barnier to lead a government drawing mostly on parliamentary support from Macron's allies, as well as from the conservative Republicans (LR) and the centrists groups.

'Government of the general election losers'

Macron was counting too, on a neutral stance from the far right -- but the leader of the National Rally (RN) Jordan Bardella was quick to condemn the composition of the new government.

It marked "a return to Macronism" and so had "no future whatsoever", he said Saturday.

At the other end of the political spectrum, far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon called the new lineup "a government of the general election losers".

France, he said, should "get rid" of the government "as soon as possible", while his party threatened to "increase popular pressure" on the government.

Socialist party chairman Oliver Faure dismissed Barnier's cabinet as "a reactionary government that gives democracy the finger".

Among the new faces in key cabinet posts are Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, a centrist, while conservative Bruno Retailleau takes over at the interior ministry.

His portfolio covers immigration and his right-wing credentials have created unease even in Macron's own camp.

Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu, a close Macron ally, has kept his job.

The difficult job of submitting a budget plan to parliament next month falls to 33-year-old Antoine Armand, the new finance minister. He has previously served as head of parliament's economic affairs commission.

The only left-of-centre politician is a little-known former Socialist Didier Migaud who was named justice minister.

Street protests

Even before the announcement, thousands of people with left-leaning sympathies took to the streets in Paris, the southern port city of Marseille and elsewhere on Saturday to protest.

They were objecting to a cabinet they say does not reflect the outcome of the parliamentary election.

The new government has nobody from inside the NFP bloc.

"I am here because this outcome does not correspond to how people voted," said Violette Bourguignon, 21, demonstrating in Paris.

Barnier is to address parliament with a key policy speech on October 1.

He then has the urgent task of submitting a budget plan to the National Assembly aimed at controlling France's rising budget deficit and debt mountain -- the first major test of his administration.

France was placed on a formal procedure for violating European Union budgetary rules before Barnier was picked as head of government.

France's public-sector deficit is projected to reach around 5.6 percent of GDP this year and go over six percent in 2025, which compares with EU rules calling for a three-percent ceiling on deficits.

"I am discovering that the country's budgetary situation is very serious," Barnier said in a statement to AFP on Wednesday, adding that the situation required "more than just pretty statements".

The new cabinet's first meeting is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Summary:

The French presidential palace unveiled a new centre-right government Saturday, more than two months after elections that produced a hung parliament and deepened political divisions as France grapples with economic and diplomatic challenges.

The government, led by conservative Michel Barnier, the European Union's former Brexit negotiator, will face the tough task of having to plug a gaping hole in public finances, which could involve having to decide politically toxic tax rises.

The 39-member Cabinet includes primarily ministers from Macron's centrist alliance and the conservative Republicans.

The makeup and direction of France's government is important because the country is a leading voice in EU policy, among the biggest world's economies and a nuclear-armed, veto-wielding member of the UN Security Council.

France unveils a more right-wing government after deadlock

France unveiled a new government on Saturday that aims to strike a fine balance between right-wingers and centrists to break political deadlock following snap elections that delivered a hung parliament.

Benjamin Haddad, Europe minister

Haddad, 38, a fluent English-speaker with excellent contacts in Washington, DC, where he spent years working at a think-tank, was first elected to parliament in 2022 under Macron's party colours.

He has been vocal on diplomatic issues and especially the war in Ukraine, having convinced tens of European lawmakers to sign a plea to the U.S. Congress to unlock aid for Ukraine at the end of 2023.

Sébastien Lecornu to stay on as defence minister

Sébastien Lecornu retains his post as defense minister. He has been instrumental in bolstering France’s military capabilities, including modernizing defense systems and managing military aid to Ukraine. His leadership in defense will be crucial as France navigates its role within NATO and handles rising geopolitical tensions over the wars in Ukraine and the Mideast.

Antoine Armand named finance minister

A relative newcomer to politics, Armand, 33, was first elected to parliament in 2022 on the centrist ticket of Macron's camp and was re-elected in July's snap legislative election.

In the new parliament, he had been set to head the economic committee in the lower house until Barnier tapped him for the top job at the powerful Ministry of Economics and Finance.

Armand is no stranger to "Bercy" as the ministry is often called in France, having joined its elite corps of finance inspectors after graduating in 2018 from the prestigious Ecole Nationale d'Administration - a training college for future senior civil servants that Macron also attended.

He will be seconded by Laurent Saint-Martin on budget issues, a delicate portfolio that will report directly to the prime minister, as France struggles to contain a rising budget deficit and contemplates spending cuts and tax hikes.

"I'm immensely honoured to be nominated finance minister", wrote Armand on X. "Thank you to the President of the Republic and to the Prime minister for their trust."

Jean-Noel Barrot named minister for Europe and foreign affairs

Barrot, 41, is promoted to foreign minister after serving as junior minister for European affairs since February 2024. Before that he was Macron's minister for digital affairs.

Barrot comes from a family with a strong political background. His father, Jacques Barrot, was a prominent French politician who served in various ministerial positions and as a European commissioner.

He provides essential political balance for the government, hailing from the centrist party of Francois Bayrou, the political veteran whose independent MoDem party Macron needs to keep on his side.

"Upon the suggestion of the Prime minister, I was nominated minister for Europe and foreign affairs by the President of the Republic," wrote Barrot on X.

"My engagement is to make the voice of France heard, and stand up to the challenges facing us."

Conservative Senator Brunon Retailleau named interior minister

A conservative senator since 2004, Bruno Retailleau, 63, is known for his hard-right views and is the most senior figure from his Republicans (LR) party to enter Barnier's government.

Retailleau was a driving force behind the party's shift to the right in an increasingly polarised political landscape, in particular on hot-button issues such as immigration.

As leader of the conservative group of senators, Retailleau has criticised Macron's latest attempts to toughen immigration rules, calling for a much tougher stance that would include constitutional changes allowing welfare benefit cuts.

He has also urged tougher policing on left-wing and environmental protesters and opposed Macron's push to add the right for women to pursue an abortion to the constitution.

Julien de Rosa, AFP

Antoine Armand will be finance minister and Jean-Noel Barrot will be foreign minister in a government composed largely of centrist and conservative parties, Alexis Kohler said from the presidential Elysee Palace late on Saturday.

Conservative French Prime Minister Michel Barnier put together the government after weeks of difficult negotiations, and President Emmanuel Macron approved it. The new government was announced at the presidential palace.

'This would bring to an end two and a half months of political uncertainty'

"An announcement [on France's new government] does appear to be imminent, with Prime Minister Michel Barnier putting in phone calls to outgoing, incoming ministers that will make up his new cabinet", said Andrew Hilliar, FRANCE 24 journalist. "On Friday evening, he submitted a list of 38 names to President Emmanuel Macron, so this would bring to an end two and a half months of political uncertainty.

France is expected to finalise a new government by Sunday, with President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Michel Barnier negotiating a cabinet reshuffle that marks a shift to the right. After months…

'Huge problem': Fox News admits Trump 'unleashed' bomb threats with pet-eating rumors

David Edwards
September 15, 2024

Fox News/screen grab

Fox News host Howard Kurtz and Fox Business host Liz Claman said Republican candidates Donald Trump and J.D. Vance created a "huge problem" after false claims about Haitians eating pets led to bomb threats in Springfield, Ohio.

On Sunday, Kurtz noted that the claims of pets being eaten had been debunked.

"But now, and now we switch to geese, but there was one guy, a Haitian, who's not a Haitian, excuse me, who was helping two injured geese, and that was portrayed," the host told Claman. "So given that local officials, the city manager, the Ohio governor was a Republican, say there's nothing to this, is this a problem?"

"It's a huge problem, and here's why," Claman said. "It has unleashed something really upsetting on Springfield. There have been bomb threats where elementary schools and hospitals, two hospitals yesterday, had to be on lockdown."

ALSO READ: 'Utterly stupid': Top far-right figures throw cold water on conspiracy about cats and dogs

"It really took, Howie, the local media, the Columbus Dispatch, which is, by the way, right-leaning," she continued. "They dispelled the whole geese issue, and by the way, the first line in their article on the web was, it is legal to shoot and hunt Canada geese."

"But this is a very serious situation and you know you've got a lot of people looking at it now."

Kurtz ended the segment by noting, "The cats and dogs at least are safe."

'That was bonkers': Dem Shapiro pounces on 'pathetic' J.D. Vance's CNN meltdown

Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) - (CNN screenshot)

Moments after Republican Party Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance concluded a contentious interview with CNN "State of the Union": host Dana Bash, Gov. Josh Shapiro made an appearance and was momentarily speechless at what he had just witnessed.

During the long interview mostly centering on his attacks on Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio with the CNN host, Donald Trump's running mate talked over her, called a question about a bomb threat in Springfield "disgusting," and at one point told her she needed "to shut up."

Given a chance to respond to the Vance interview, Shapiro paused and then offered, "I mean, Dana, that was bonkers."

ALSO READ: 'I want Vance to apologize': We went to Springfield and found community hurt — and divided

"Listen, the [Republican] governor of Ohio, the mayor of that town in Ohio, have said this is all made up. These are all lies, there's no truth to it," he continued. "And the United States senator from Ohio just came on your show and blamed his own constituents for his own lies? This guy is so pathetic."

"But the thing is, it is dangerous," he continued. "There is a causal connection between the BS that J.D Vance and Donald Trump spew and the safety and security of the American people. When they go out and they lie about this stuff they put their fellow Americans at risk."

"J.D. Vance should be ashamed of himself, he knows better," he added. "I mean, this guy, whether he's on your show or he's in some sports bar where I mean, by the way, a total pick me in that sports bar the other day. he just doesn't understand the power of his words, the power of his lies, and those lies are putting and people at risk."

"This is dangerous stuff," he told the host. "I know it started because they wanted to just distract the American people from their failed policies and they're chaos. But this has now taken on a life of its own because of what they incited and people's lives are at risk because of J.D. Vance. This guy should know better, it's shameful what he did."

A BRIDGE TOO FAR
Allies to remember failed WWII parachute operation

Agence France-Presse
September 20, 2024

The 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden culminated this week with a series of commemorative events (ROB ENGELAAR/AFP)

Veterans and royals gather this weekend to mark the 80th anniversary of one of World War II's greatest Allied debacles: an unprecedented but failed airborne operation to seize Dutch bridges and forge a path into Nazi Germany.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Britain's Princess Anne will join a handful of remaining veterans to commemorate Operation Market Garden, the ill-fated plan to enter Germany through the Netherlands in a surprise advance to end the war in 1944.

On Saturday, hundreds of parachutists will re-enact the September 1944 airborne assault by jumping from a number of planes, including a historic Dakota transporter similar to those used in the actual operation.

Willem-Alexander will "lay the first wreath at the Airborne monument and meet the last veterans who took part in the operation," Dutch officials said.

On Sunday, Princess Anne and other dignitaries will attend a memorial service at the Oosterbeek war cemetery to remember those Allied soldiers who died during the operation, including around 1,400 during the Battle of Arnhem.

- 'Disastrous' -

Market Garden started on September 17, 1944 as a daring plan which Allied commanders had hoped would hasten the end of the war in Europe, opening up an invasion route to Berlin.

Thousands of British, US and Polish paratroopers were dropped above the Netherlands in the largest airborne and glider operation in history, to occupy bridges and waterways from Belgium to the Dutch city of Arnhem and open the way for Allied tanks.

"Dogged by bad luck and bad weather, the airborne operation failed mainly because the drop zones were too far from the objectives," wrote British historian Antony Beevor.

"Radio communications failed disastrously and the Germans reacted far more rapidly than expected," he said.

Conceived by British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the plan went ahead despite warnings from the Dutch resistance that two German SS Panzer divisions were in the area.

Ultimately the Allies, driving up a single road towards the final bridge across the lower Rhine at Arnhem, failed to link up with the airborne assault troops, who were forced to surrender.

The battle was immortalised by the 1977 Hollywood war epic "A Bridge Too Far" directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Sean Connery, James Caan, Gene Hackman and Robert Redford.

The bridge at Arnhem is now named after British Lieutenant Colonel John Frost who together with 600 men held it for four days before being overrun.

In total, the ill-conceived operation saw the Germans take around 6,600 prisoners and Allied losses totaled almost 15,000, according to Beevor.

The Netherlands was finally liberated in May 1945 and in September that same year, the first commemoration of Arnhem was held in Oosterbeek as it has been every year since.

- 'Ultimate sacrifice' -

The 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden culminated this week with a series of commemorative events.

This included the solemn reburial of two Allied soldiers who died at the time, and whose remains were only discovered and identified a few years ago.

Private Henry Moon from Yorkshire in northern England and South African Lieutenant Dermod Anderson were reburied with full military honors on Wednesday.

"I think what strikes me as I've been around over the last couple of days, is the number of Airborne Division flags I've seen flying from people's homes, outside bars or restaurants and in public places," said Robert Desics, the military chaplain who conducted Moon's burial.

"This is clearly an anniversary which has deep significance for the Dutch," he told AFP.

The commemoration of Operation Market Garden "just shows that we do not forget those who lost their lives, made that ultimate sacrifice 80 years ago," added David Snowdon, Moon's great nephew.

Leading climate activist released from Vietnam jail

Agence France-Presse
September 21, 2024

Prominent climate activist Hoang Thi Minh Hong has been released early from jail
(Handout)

Prominent climate activist Hoang Thi Minh Hong has been released early from jail, her husband told AFP on Saturday, hours ahead of a visit by Vietnam's top leader to the United States.

A second high-profile detainee, dissident Tran Huynh Duy Thuc, was also released, his friend and former human rights lawyer Le Cong Dinh said.

The release of Hong and Thuc comes as General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam's top leader, departed Saturday for the United States for a working visit and to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Last September Hong was sentenced to three years in prison for dodging $275,000 in taxes related to her environmental campaign group CHANGE.

She was one of five environmentalists jailed for tax evasion, in what activists have called a campaign to silence them.

"She has been fully pardoned," her husband Hoang Vinh Nam told AFP. "It was very sudden."

Nam said they had speculated whether there could be some positive news about Hong ahead of Lam's US visit, but they had no clear information until yesterday about her release from jail in Gia Lai, a mountainous province in Vietnam's Central Highlands.

"She took a bus home, it took her 12 hours to reach Ho Chi Minh City and I picked her up from the bus station at 5:00 am this morning (22:00 GMT Friday).

"It's just amazing. She's good, she's healthy and she's the same person she was when she went in (to prison)."

- 'Spirit is strong' -

Hong founded CHANGE to mobilise Vietnamese, particularly young people, to take action on pressing environmental issues, including climate change, the illegal wildlife trade and pollution.

But the communist government has shown little appetite for dissenting voices on environmental issues.

It also tolerates no opposition to its one-party rule and regularly jails critics.

Internet entrepreneur Thuc was sentenced to 16 years in jail in 2010 for trying to overthrow the regime.

Three others, including Dinh, were jailed alongside him in a case which sparked global concern.

Dinh told AFP that Thuc was released from prison in central Nghe An province on Friday and flew to Ho Chi Minh City, where he was held in a government builidng close to his house.

At 4:00 am on Saturday, "he called his sister... and asked all of us to come to the People's Committee to pick him up. We came and after half an hour they released him."

"He looked very thin, and his hair is white but his spirit is very strong," said Dinh, who was released from jail in 2013.

At their trial, they were found guilty of a well-organized non-violent campaign, in collusion with "overseas exile reactionary organizations", aimed at overturning the government with the help of the internet.

In the United States, General Secretary Lam will chair an event marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the first year of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Hanoi and Washington, state media said.

An order of Catholic monks that once ran up to 80 schools in Canada's Quebec province was hit Friday with accusations of sexual assaults over decades.

In a class action, more than 87 victims have come forward with allegations against the Brothers of Christian Instruction that date as far back as 1940. Several of the monks are now deceased.

In court documents, the accusers detail assaults at more than 20 schools run by the Brothers across the province of Quebec.

Most occurred between the 1950s and 1970s, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs told AFP.

"The plaintiffs allege in particular that the congregation was aware of the Brothers' sexual assaults on children, but that it preferred to move and protect the attackers rather than help the victims," they said in the court filings.

The lead plaintiff, a man identified only by his initials M.J., accused one of the monks, Brother Charles, of twice sexually assaulting him starting when he was 13 years old at Sainte-Bernadette-Soubirous school in Montreal between 1960 and 1961.

He said Brother Charles, who was in charge of the student body, approached him from behind in class, and tried to put his hand down the boy's pants.

On another occasion, the monk allegedly grabbed the boy by his sweater during a singing practice and tried to force him to touch his genitals.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of another class action that included an accusation that an influential Canadian cardinal sexually assaulted a teenage girl in the late 1980s.

Cardinal Gerald Lacroix, the 66-year-old archbishop of Quebec and a member of the pope's so-called C9 advisory council of nine cardinals, has denied the accusation.

Cards Against Humanity sues Elon Musk's SpaceX for $15 million

Elon Musk

The makers of irreverent party game "Cards Against Humanity" are suing Elon Musk's SpaceX for $15 million, claiming it dumped "gravel, tractors and space garbage" on pristine land.

A lawsuit filed in Texas on Thursday said SpaceX had invaded property owned by the game company, which sits next to its Starbase, and "treated it as its own for at least six months."

"Elon Musk's SpaceX was building some space thing nearby, and he figured he could just dump his shit all over our gorgeous plot of land without asking," read a website detailing the lawsuit.

"After we caught him, SpaceX gave us a 12-hour ultimatum to accept a lowball offer for less than half our land's value."

The company said it declined the offer and began legal action.

Cards Against Humanity is a game based on amusing and irreverent answers by players to topics suggested by the cards.

The company relied on crowdfunding for the game's initial development in 2010. It uses a series of pranks and stunts highlighting what it says are injustices as part of its marketing strategy.

At the heart of the suit is a parcel of land on the US-Mexico border that Cards Against Humanity LLC bought in 2017 in an effort to stymie the construction of a border wall pledged by then-president Donald Trump, using thousands of $15 pledges from users.

"150,000 people gave us their hard-earned money, and in exchange we vowed to protect this land from racist billionaires and their dumb vanity projects," the website says.

"We promised we'd use every legal tool at our disposal to protect this land from bullies like Trump and Musk (who's spending millions to get Trump elected...)," the firm said.

All original contributors stand to get up to $100 each if the company prevails in its lawsuit, it said.

There was no immediate reply from SpaceX to an AFP request for comment.

Feminist author warns of abortion disaster if Trump wins U.S. election

Agence France-Presse
September 21, 2024

In an interview with AFP ahead of her latest book, 'Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lies, and the Truths We Use to Win,' Jessica Valenti urged progressives to go on the offensive and reminded Americans of the stakes as the next election looms

For feminist writer Jessica Valenti, what began as a personal effort to track the torrent of bans and horror stories after the US Supreme Court overturned long-standing abortion rights in 2022 has evolved into a bigger mission.

Her Substack newsletter, "Abortion, Every Day," quickly became more than just a way to organize the "chaos in my own brain." It now serves as a daily chronicle of American women's fight for reproductive freedom.

In an interview with AFP ahead of her latest book, "Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lies, and the Truths We Use to Win," the 45-year-old New Yorker urged progressives to go on the offensive, and she underscored the stakes for Americans as the next election looms.

"If (Kamala) Harris loses, we're absolutely looking at a national abortion ban, even if it's not a formal one through Congress," Valenti said from her Brooklyn home.

One of former president Donald Trump's first moves, Valenti warned, could be to replace the head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and restrict access to abortion pills, potentially by revoking rules that now allow them to be mailed.

Conservative legal scholars go further, suggesting a future administration could interpret a 19th-century obscenity law to block access to all abortion-related supplies -- not just pills.

That would effectively end the procedure nationwide, even in states where it remains legal.

Does that sound far-fetched? Valenti recalls when feminists who warned that Roe could fall were dismissed as hysterical.

"We're being told again that it's never going to happen," she said. "The same pundits refuse to acknowledge we'll probably be correct again."

Since the Supreme Court's conservative majority, including three Trump appointees, issued its ruling, 22 states have banned or severely restricted abortion.

Some states allowed exceptions for rape or to save a woman's life, but these have proven widely inadequate, forcing some women to cross state lines for lifesaving care.

None of this is accidental, Valenti argues -- such exceptions were designed to make the bans appear less harsh, even while keeping abortion nearly unobtainable.

Her latest book comes as ProPublica reported on the deaths of two Black women in Georgia -- deaths that might have been avoided if not for the state's criminalization of the dilation and curettage (D&C) procedures commonly used in abortions.

- 'Christian nationalist project' -

"It's impossible for them to credibly claim this is about saving lives and being 'pro-life,'" Valenti said.

She believes America's anti-abortion movement is best understood as a misogynist, White Christian supremacist project that seeks to turn the clock back decades.

For Valenti, as with many women, reproductive autonomy is not just political but deeply personal.

She ended her first pregnancy three months before meeting her husband; they had a daughter two years later.

Although she longed for another child, complications during a subsequent pregnancy gave her a 50 percent chance of developing a fatal illness.

"Of course, there was no real decision," she said. "I made a parent's decision," opting to terminate to ensure that her toddler not be left motherless.

While the media often focuses on "horror stories" of women losing fertility -- or their lives -- due to abortion bans, Valenti emphasized that "every abortion denied is a tragedy."

Sometimes people simply "don't want to be pregnant, and that's fine -- that is vital to your freedom over your body, your life, and your future."

Strategically, Valenti urges Democrats to move beyond advocating that abortion be "safe, legal and rare," and instead focus on strengthening legal protections.

"We're in a moment where abortion is more popular than ever," she said, citing polling that shows broad bipartisan support for keeping government out of the issue.

Over the past two years, whether in midterms, ballot initiatives or state court races, "any election where abortion has played a role, abortion rights have prevailed," Valenti added.

With Kamala Harris, a pro-choice champion, leading the Democratic ticket, Valenti feels "more hopeful" than when Joe Biden, whose stance was more cautious, was running.

However, Republican Trump "has been strategic in pretending he is more moderate on abortion, deliberately muddying his position," Valenti warned.

"I'm still concerned."
