Where people get their news influences their beliefs about vaccines



New survey finds significant link between ‘new right’ outlets and vaccine hesitancy

People who follow “new right” media outlets are more than twice as likely to be vaccine-hesitant compared to those who never engage with those outlets, a new Johns Hopkins University study finds.

Researchers surveyed nearly 3,000 adults in 2025, as measles cases hit record highs in the United States, asking participants about their sources for news and health information and how they felt about the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine. The findings revealed how specific media habits are strongly associated with attitudes toward vaccines.

The study found:

  • People who regularly engaged with “new right” media outlets, meaning digital news outlets with a strong conservative political bias including Breitbart, Newsmax and Zero Hedge, were more than twice as likely to be vaccine hesitant.
  • Hesitant adults were more likely to rely on non-authoritative sources for health information, like alternative health providers, social media health influencers and alternative health newsletters, such as Children’s Health Defense.

“Our work reveals a strong association between people’s specific media habits and their attitudes towards vaccination,” said author Lauren Gardner, director of Johns Hopkins’ Center for Systems Science and Engineering and an expert in using data and modeling to better understand disease risk. “Our findings suggest that when everyone is already engaging online, where and how they choose to do so matters.”

The study is newly published in the journal Vaccine.

In 2025, more than 2,000 measles cases across 43 states were reported in the United States, the most cases since the highly infectious disease was declared eradicated in 2000. Almost all the cases occurred in unvaccinated people.

Measles cases continue to rise this year.

The outbreak follows a steady drop in childhood vaccination rates, including the MMR vaccine, across the country since the COVID-19 pandemic. Coverage among school children hovers at 93%—below the 95% herd immunity threshold needed to predict or limit the spread of measles.

Previous research has demonstrated that adults who rely on less authoritative health information sources for vaccine information, such as internet news and social media, were more hesitant about vaccinating their own children. But less was known about how people’s general news habits might tie into their vaccination beliefs.

Gardner’s team surveyed 2,970 adults last August. While most Americans, 83%, reported the MMR vaccine benefits outweighed the risks, roughly 1 in 6 respondents reporting feeling hesitant about the vaccine.

Hesitant adults were significantly younger, with 62% under age 44, and more likely to be parents. They were more likely to be racial minorities, lower-income, and less educated. They expressed more conservative political beliefs and were more likely to identify with the Republican party, 39%, or as an Independent, 33%. Hesitant adults were also more likely to identify with the Make America Healthy Again movement, or MAHA, 43%, than non-hesitant adults, 27%.

Most participants, 87%, reported following the news, with no significant differences between hesitant and non-hesitant adults. Almost everyone said they were online at least daily and almost everyone engaged with a variety of news sources.

The greatest difference between the news and information habits of vaccine hesitant and non-hesitant participants was what researchers called the “selective media engagement” of non-hesitant individuals.

While almost everyone surveyed said they were online at least daily and almost everyone consumed content across multiple mediums, outlets and platforms, non-hesitant adults were less likely to engage with right-leaning “new media” channels, and significantly less likely to obtain information from non-authoritative sources such as alternative health providers, online health influencers, alternative health newsletters.

The findings suggest that reliance on physicians for health information emerged as a strong protective effect against vaccine hesitancy and that to improve vaccination rates, health communicators must address how and where Americans find information about vaccines.

“With public health becoming increasingly polarized, it’s critical to understand people’s attitudes about vaccines, and this work suggest people’s media preferences play an outsized role in influencing those attitudes.” said co-first author Amelia Jamison, an assistant research scientist at Johns Hopkins, who studies health communication.

Medical scientists are stricter while natural, social and humanities scientists are more permissive. The attitude to ethically problematic ways of conducting research differs clearly between disciplines, according to a study from Linköping University, Sweden.

The Linköping researchers have examined the research community’s attitudes through a survey of more than 11,000 researchers active in Sweden. The background to the study is the sometimes harsh public debate about research credibility.

On a seven-degree scale, the participants were asked to rate their attitude to everything from clear forms of cheating to research practices that are more in the grey area. The results are presented in the journal Research Policy.

There is a general agreement that it is wrong to fabricate results or plagiarise the work of others. But even research in the grey area is generally seen as unacceptable. However, the degree to which we distance ourselves differs between research areas. Medical scientists have a clearly stricter attitude than colleagues in the social sciences and humanities. Above all, they view behaviours that involve a lack of respect for individuals and society more seriously.

“This is interesting because previous studies, where researchers themselves had to state what they actually do in practice, show that deviations from good research practice is more common in medicine. The number of articles withdrawn is also highest in medicine. It points to a potential tension between attitude and practice,” says Amanda Lindkvist, PhD student in the interdisciplinary research group Jedilab at the Division of Economics at Linköping University.

The survey shows that social scientists and humanities scientists are not so strict mainly when it comes to so-called open science. For example, they are more lenient with researchers not sharing data or not giving advance notice of how a study is organised, so-called pre-registration. The purpose of open science is to increase research transparency and hence research credibility.

The differences between research fields could be explained by traditions, the LiU researchers suggest. The field of medicine has long had formal ethical rules in place. But there may also be good reasons for researchers in the humanities and social sciences to sometimes make ethical judgments differing from those of medical researchers. For example, it may be considered unethical to openly share data collected through interviews or field notes. This is because participants in a study could then be identified.

The survey has also been sent to members of Swedish research ethics committees. It turns out that they are stricter in their attitudes than the researchers themselves, no matter what discipline they are set to examine. The differences raise questions about how a research ethics system should actually be designed, according to the LiU researchers. Can – and should – the same ethical rules apply to all research fields?

But the greatest variation in ethical attitudes lies not between disciplines, but between individuals within the same field, the study shows. Even in medicine – the most restrictive area – there are significant differences in how researchers assess different practices.

“Although research field affiliation is important for how to assess questionable research practices, there are other factors that also come into play, such as one’s individual moral stance,” says Assistant Professor Lina Koppel at Jedilab, Linköping University.

 

‘Forever chemicals’ may be linked to childhood leukemia



UC Irvine-led study suggests early-life PFAS exposure increases cancer risk

Irvine, Calif., April 27, 2026 — Early exposure to PFAS, a group of widely used compounds known as “forever chemicals,” was associated with a higher risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, according to University of California, Irvine Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health researchers.

The findings were published recently in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology, a Nature journal.

PFAS are found in drinking water, food and beverage containers, and everyday items like nonstick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics. They don’t break down easily and can build up in the body over time.

The study adds to earlier research by the same team, which tracked PFAS exposure in drinking water among more than 40,000 California children. That work, published in Environmental Epidemiology, linked higher levels of two common PFAS chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, to increased risk of several childhood cancers, including acute myeloid leukemia and Wilms tumor.

In their new study, the researchers analyzed dried blood spots collected from newborns to get a clearer picture of early exposure. The study included 125 children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 219 children without cancer, all born in Los Angeles County between 2000 and 2015, and identified through the California Linkage Study of Early-onset Cancers.

Among 17 PFAS detected in the newborn blood, PFOA and PFOS showed up at the highest levels. Children with higher levels had increased odds of developing leukemia, though the estimates were not precise. Risk also appeared to rise with combined exposure to the two chemicals.

Researchers also identified 26 additional PFAS compounds, several of which showed similar patterns, including some that have rarely been studied.

Stronger links were seen among non-Hispanic children, though researchers cautioned that those findings are preliminary due to small sample sizes.

“This research moves us closer to understanding what babies are exposed to from the very start by directly measuring PFAS present at birth, rather than estimating exposure from drinking water,” said corresponding author Veronica Vieira, chair and professor of environmental and occupational health at Wen Public Health. “By capturing exposures during a critical window of development, we are gaining a clearer picture of how environmental contaminants may contribute to childhood cancer risk.”

The study does not prove cause and effect, but it adds to growing evidence that PFAS exposure early in life may contribute to cancer risk in children.

As PFAS contamination remains widespread, researchers say more studies are needed to understand how this persistent class of chemicals, the majority of which remain largely unmonitored, may affect children’s health and how exposure can be reduced at the population level.

The research was supported by a National Institutes of Health grant.

As cities sprawl into suburbs and exurbs, the distinction between urban areas and the countryside has become increasingly blurry. A new paper published in npj Urban Sustainability proposes that many modern landscapes can be managed more holistically when they are understood as a mixture of urban, rural, and wild features.

“There used to be a clear boundary between cities relative to the countryside and the wild, but that has been changing for a long time,” says lead author Steward Pickett, an urban ecologist and scientist emeritus at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. “You can’t just walk in a straight line from a city center and define where the ‘urban’ ends.”

Pickett and coauthors put forth a new framework that emphasizes the many connections among urban, rural, and wild places that can create a blend of these features in a given area. 

“It’s like patchwork or a mosaic,” explains Pickett. “You can have a place that's 70% urban and 30% rural right next to a place that's the opposite, or has some wild mixed in.” He and his coauthors hope this new way of thinking, which they have dubbed the “continuum of urbanity,” helps urban ecologists, planners, and city managers better understand how these areas function and what matters most to residents. The continuum may also be useful to policy experts, engineers, decision makers, and activists.

The paper grew out of a Cary Conference in 2021 and includes four Cary coauthors: Winslow HansenShannon LaDeauChristopher Solomon, and Elizabeth Cook. Funding came from the National Science Foundation and Cary Institute’s Science Innovation Funds

Connections and mixtures are everywhere

Traditional thinking separates urban and rural (or ‘natural’) spaces, as well as the research fields that study them. In place of this black and white dichotomy, the new framework offers a middle ground with many shades of gray. 

The blending of urban, rural, and wild is everywhere once you know how to look for it, says Pickett. Wild animals such as coyotes and even bears sometimes turn up in towns and cities. Rural influence can be seen in community gardens or a tomato plant growing on a fire escape. There are urban influences in rural areas, too, reflected in the types of jobs people perform and the entertainment they consume.

The paper explores how these dynamics play out in the Mid-Hudson Valley as an example. This region of upstate New York is composed of small cities, towns, farms, and forests. It is physically connected to New York City by the Hudson River, several highways, railways, and more. This connectivity lets people, money, and culture flow between the two locations. For example, asylum seekers (some bused to New York City from southern states) have been housed in hotels in the Mid-Hudson Valley. The COVID-19 pandemic sent many New Yorkers into the Hudson Valley, driving up property prices and threatening to increase development on recently reforested land. The growth of online shopping, intensified by COVID-19, has changed livelihoods and locations in the Mid-Hudson Valley through novel employment opportunities, conversion of land to warehouses and large distribution centers, and the road infrastructure and associated truck traffic to serve them. In another example, the paper shares how, in suburban landscapes, connecting previously fragmented forests has facilitated the spread of blacklegged ticks and Lyme disease.

Global-scale connections can link distant places, too, such as the accidental introduction, via international trade, of forest pests like the emerald ash borer and the spotted lanternfly that are harming Hudson Valley forests. Similarly, the demand for beef in the Hudson Valley can incentivize deforestation for cattle grazing in the Amazon. And as climate change causes more droughts, floods, and fires across New York City and the Hudson Valley, it may continue to reshape the distribution of homes and businesses and the flow of ideas between the region’s urban, rural, and wild places. 

“The message of the Mid-Hudson River Valley case is that familiar urban and rural features are tightly linked,” the authors write in the paper. “One cannot be understood without the other, nor can policies, plans, and interventions neglect the entanglement of the seemingly discrete urban and rural human ecosystem characteristics.”

From theory to practice

The authors outline four main areas of life where urban, rural, and wild influence could potentially be measured:

  • Livelihood: How do people in this community support themselves? People who own or work on farms, for example, will likely experience more rural influence. Urban livelihoods can become part of rural places — for example, when remote workers in the financial sector bring urban resources and expectations to seemingly rural locations.

  • Lifestyle: How do people identify socially? Who do they consider part of their community? This can be linked to the kinds of houses they live in or the cars they drive, says Pickett. “If you are a farmer who owns a truck and a Mercedes, the Mercedes is something that expresses your social status and connects you with wealthy people way beyond the farm.”

  • Connectivity: How are different parts of the region connected, and how well are they connected? Connectivity goes beyond physical infrastructure. For example, Pickett explains, people living on farms in South Africa may be supported by money flowing from family members working in big cities in South Africa or even the US or Europe.

  • Location: The specific geography where livelihood, lifestyle, and connectivity interact.

How the continuum of urbanity can help 

“We hope that the continuum of urbanity encourages people to slow down and think before they design, build, or renovate,” says Pickett. “For example, someone might want to coordinate the traffic lights to reduce traffic and gasoline consumption. That's all well and good, but if you only design your city for efficiency, you're likely to neglect some of the amenities people need for a pleasant, healthy life. Our framework slows you down and makes you ask, ‘How's this going to affect how people live, or where they can recreate, or how they can build social relationships?’ If your profession is an urban ecologist or an urban designer, an urban planner, or a city manager, you have to be aware of all of these components.”

Coauthor and Cary ecologist Shannon LaDeau said she is already incorporating the continuum of urbanity in Defining Urban Biodiversity, a project she co-leads with Scenic Hudson that seeks to understand how changing green spaces in three Hudson Valley cities impacts plants, animals, and people. “The ideas in the paper inform how I think about the urban matrix that links our study sites to each other, to New York City, as well as to ecosystems of the Hudson River and Catskills,” she said.

Coauthor Robert Freudenberg, vice president of energy and environmental programs at the Regional Plan Association, said the Continuum of Urbanity approach is helping him move away from oversimplistic categorizations of land and community, to better consider the complex mixtures in the places where he works, especially when planning for climate change.  

“The concept provides an extraordinary framework for considering how climate impacts are manifesting within the natural systems that bind the region together,” said Freudenberg. “If we are going to plan and manage our way to adapt to climate change, and hopefully avoid its very worst impacts, understanding the ecological interactions that branch across our developed places will be essential.”

Cary’s Winslow Hansen, coauthor and director of a large collaborative that seeks to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires in the western US, says the continuum of urbanity helps him see an important part of his work in a new way. 

“In my current area of work, we think about the wildland urban interface as a distinct boundary between human communities and wild areas as the epicenter of fire risk,” says Hansen. “But if you instead embrace a continuum of urbanity, then risk mitigation from fire could become more nuanced, tailored to local ecological and social conditions rather than viewing the world as clearly categorized into one or the other.”

There remains much work to do to refine the continuum of urbanity and figure out how to measure the three dimensions. However, the authors hope that the new concept will change the way people think about communities, guiding more thoughtful research and helpful interventions.
