Deep Freeze

In Edmonton we have been under extreme weather warnings for the past 24 hours. It snowed all day yesterday and continues to day. As well with the wind chill factor it is almost -50 below. My furnace is set at 30 and the house is cold, even though it is 68. The cold reverberates off the windows, doors, and any little lead we haven't caught with caulking. This is weather to hibernate in.

But at least we are not alone with extreme winter weather. Though in the U.S. they blame it on us.

An Alberta Clipper zipping through the Midwest today will bring snow to the East over the next few days, with a new shot of arctic air following close behind. Meanwhile, rain and snow continue today along the West Coast.

The clipper diving out of western Canada today is bringing snow to the Upper Midwest. The Winter Weather Center reports that the heaviest snow will fall on the northern tip of Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

The cold stretches from the far north all the way down through Canada into the U.S. The West Coast is not immune facing record winter storms, including snow in LA. Thats Los Angeles not Leduc, Alberta. And it has even impacted as far West as China.

You Don't Need A Weatherman

To know which way the wind blows.

It's been blowing since yesterday. I know my wind chimes haven't stopped ringing.

This is what the American 24/7 cable channels call 'severe weather'.

Except it's Alberta. It's Edmonton. It's November. When we should have snow. We have above average temperatures. Rain. And now wind storms.

90 km an hour that's a hurricane by any other name. Except we are landlocked.

I call it Weird Weather.

Wind warning for: City of Edmonton-St. Albert-Sherwood Park
Issued at 5:11 AM MST TUESDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2007
STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS OF 60 GUSTING TO 90 KM/H HAVE DEVELOPED.
AN INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVED EASTWARD THROUGH CENTRAL ALBERTA OVERNIGHT. IN THE WAKE OF THE SYSTEM GUSTY WESTERLY WINDS HAVE DEVELOPED AND WINDS OF 60 GUSTING TO 90 KM/H ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE WARNING REGIONS UNTIL MID AFTERNOON.

PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST PUBLIC FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

Alberta's First Killer Tornado

Twenty years ago today was declared Black Friday in Edmonton, when an F4 Tornado hit the city killing 27 people. The majority of those killed lived in Evergreen Trailer park.

It was the worst natural disaster in the city and provinces history, and unexpected since Alberta never had Tornado's before that day.

Today we have an advanced province wide emergency weather reporting system, the only one of its kind in Canada, which operates through CKUA radio.

And it has been broadcasting last night and this morning about Tornado's in the south of the province.

Climate Change, nah nothing to worry about.

Tornado In Southern Alberta

CKUA is reporting that a Tornado has touched down in Crossfield, Alberta, and is moving east at 40 clicks per hour. We have severe weather warnings across the province and Tornado watches in the south; Wheatland, Ardrie, Rockyview, Strathmore, Vulcan, Drumheller, etc.

The Alberta Emergency Public Warning System was created following the 1987 Edmonton Tornado as a joint public alerting initiative with CKUA funded by the Alberta Government.
