Giving AI a classic psychological test reveals an inherent weakness in LLM decision-making abilities.

Suketu Patel and colleagues explored how transformer-based machine attention differs from human attention by testing AI models on the “Stroop task,” in which words for colors are printed in colored ink, and participants are asked to name the ink color of each word while ignoring its meaning. The task is clinically used to assess executive control, especially a person’s ability to inhibit an automatic response. Although humans generally take longer to answer correctly when words and colors are mismatched than when they match, they can still perform stably and with high accuracy even on long word lists. 

The authors found that when the word and ink color did not match, LLMs performed well with a list of five words. But as the list of words grew longer, AI performance degraded dramatically. GPT-4o dropped from 91% accuracy at 5 words to 57% accuracy at 10 words and 15% accuracy at 40 words. Claude 3.5 Sonnet was stable through 20 words, but crashed to 24% accuracy at 40 words. In trials with a list of words in both matching and mismatched colors, LLM performance was even worse, dropping to near 0% accuracy for the mismatched items. Similar results were found with GPT-5, Claude Opus 4.1, and Gemini 2.5. LLMs struggled to stay focused on naming the color rather than defaulting to word reading. As with humans, LLMs are better trained on word reading than on color naming, yet humans can suppress word reading in long lists and maintain focus on the task at hand. According to the authors, the performance collapse of LLMs suggests fundamental limitations compared with biological attention.

'Choose France' summit puts AI at heart of Macron’s €93 billion investment drive


Foreign companies have pledged a total of €93 billion in investment at France's annual Choose France summit, President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday, with artificial intelligence and data infrastructure projects accounting for the bulk of commitments.

Around 200 senior executives from around the world were hosted at the famous palace southwest of Paris on Monday, with tens of billions of euros in investment already pledged or expected.

This year’s gathering has a strong focus on artificial intelligence, data centres and the infrastructure needed to power the next wave of digital growth.

The summit has become one of Macron’s flagship economic showcases since it was launched in 2018, a year after he entered the Elysee. Its purpose is to convince international companies that France is open for business – and that it can compete in high-tech industry, clean power and advanced manufacturing.

The 2025 edition set a record, with €20 billion in announced projects. This year’s pledges could prove even larger, thanks especially to major plans from technology and investment groups betting on France’s role in the AI boom.

AI takes centre stage

The biggest announcement has come from the Japanese technology investment giant SoftBank, which said at the weekend that it would spend €75 billion on artificial intelligence infrastructure. Its founder, Masayoshi Son, met with Macron at the Elysee palace on Monday.

The pledge underlines how quickly AI has become an economic priority for governments and companies alike. Training and running large AI models requires huge computing power, secure data capacity and reliable electricity – making data centres and advanced chips central to the new industrial landscape.

France is keen to make itself a hub for that ecosystem. According to the business daily Les Echos, Canadian asset manager Brookfield is expected to announce a $10 billion of investment in a data centre in the Escaudain area of northern France. The same report said investment firm Ardian and Nordic data platform Verne would put $5 billion into a data centre in the Paris region.

Taiwanese manufacturing group Foxconn is also expected to invest €120 million in the western city of Angers, where it would develop a production line for motherboards dedicated to AI in partnership with Bull, the French supercomputer specialist.

The summit could also bring announcements on rare earths, the critical minerals used in a wide range of advanced technologies, from electric vehicles to wind turbines and defence equipment. That would fit with France’s wider effort to strengthen supply chains in sectors seen as essential to future economic sovereignty.

Since the first “Choose France” summit, more than 230 projects have been announced, representing some €87 billion and several thousand jobs, according to the Elysee. For Macron, that record supports his argument that pro-business reforms, lower corporate taxes and investment in skills and technology have made France more attractive.

Challenges remain

France has attracted the most foreign investment in Europe for seven years in a row, according to consultancy EY. Macron has argued that this success “does not come out of thin air”, pointing to the policy choices made during his presidency.

EY said France attracted 852 foreign investment projects last year out of 5,026 recorded across 47 European countries. That kept it in first place, although the figure also represented a 17 percent fall in a difficult international environment.

So the picture is encouraging, but mixed. France has been especially successful in attracting AI-linked projects, more than any other European country. Yet parts of its traditional industrial base remain under pressure, particularly the car, chemicals and metallurgy sectors.

That is where the upbeat tone of the Versailles summit meets the harder reality of the wider economy. Big announcements can generate headlines and confidence, but they do not automatically reverse years of industrial decline or weak business investment.

Macron has made no secret of his ambition to make France a world leader in artificial intelligence. He has also announced €1.55 billion of public investment to develop quantum technologies and semiconductors, two areas closely linked to the future of computing and industrial competitiveness.

The question now is whether France can turn the momentum from “Choose France” into a broader economic shift.

New trade secret rules: China says its AI data is none of your business

Under new Chinese regulations, any algorithm, dataset or program not publicly disclosed now counts as a trade secret.

Algorithms and computer programmes are now considered trade secrets by the Chinese government.

The new regulations, called “Trade Secret Protection,” went into effect on Monday. The rules say that any “information related to technology, such as structure, raw materials, formula, materials, samples, patterns, processes, methods, data, algorithms, computer programmes and codes,” is considered a trade secret.

Technical or business information that “is not publicly known, has commercial value,” and is confidential also falls under the regulation.

Anything that has already been described in the media or in open reports is not considered a trade secret.

The regulation sets out strict measures for remote work and cross-border collaboration, including access controls, data anonymisation to mask personally identifiable information, and detailed logs of who has accessed, copied or modified data.

People or companies can report whether their trade secrets have been divulged, and if an investigation by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) confirms that, a fine of up to 5 million yuan (€630,000) could be issued.

The regulations are China’s latest move to protect AI secrets. Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that the government is restricting the movement of its AI talent and, in May, Beijing blocked Meta’s acquisition of China-founded Manus, one of the country’s top AI companies.

This week, China also issued sweeping new rules to tighten overseas deals that involve Chinese investors, technology, data and national security.

The new regulations are the first update to China’s trade secrets rules since 1998 and now explicitly mention AI and data as falling under the law.

The Chinese state is conducting what they call a “Enterprise Trade Secret Protection Capacity Enhancement Service,” month in June, as they have every year since 2023.

During the month, they will hold business trainings to “cultivate awareness” and conduct risk assessments with the new regulations.

(Toronto, June 2, 2026) JMIR Publications today released a News and Perspectives article investigating the potential implications of AI–enabled toys for children's well-being and development. Authored by JMIR Correspondent Simon Spichak, “Policymakers and Researchers Zero In On the Impact of AI Toys” explores the rapid proliferation of consumer toys integrated with LLMs, the severe lack of research regarding their impact on early neurodevelopment, and the growing privacy and transparency concerns raised by experts and policymakers.

Impact on Early Neurodevelopment 

Despite an estimated 22 million AI-integrated toys being sold globally in 2025, there is almost no research on how these tools affect a young child's cognitive and socioemotional development, Spichak reports. While nurturing human talk and interaction is known to build a child's brain, according to pediatric cochlear implant surgeon Dana L. Suskind, it remains unclear whether mimicking human speech through AI toys provides similar developmental benefits. In fact, a recent study by the University of Cambridge's AI in the Early Years project found that the AI toy they selected (Curio Interactive Inc’s Gabbo) missed the mark with pretend and social play—crucial developmental activities for its young users. 

Privacy and Safety Concerns 

Ethicists and policymakers are raising alarms over the security risks of these devices. AI toys are often equipped with cameras, microphones, and facial recognition features, but they frequently lack important privacy measures, creating what bioethicist Łukasz Kamieński describes as a "totally unregulated area". Spichak reports that without proper safeguards, there are also risks of these toys engaging minors in inappropriate conversations, as well as subtly passing on misinformation and propaganda to young users.

The Need for Guardrails and Transparency 

While some educators believe AI interactivity could eventually be beneficial in the right context, experts emphasize the immediate need for rigorous regulation. Developmental psychologist Emily Goodacre, coauthor of the AI in the Early Years project, advocates for mandatory labeling on AI toys that detail the underlying LLM models, training data, and safety guardrails so parents, families, and educators can be properly informed. The current consensus urges caution; Suskind stresses that a deeper understanding of the interactions of AI companions on young brains—and better guardrails—is needed before they’re ready to be safely deployed.

Typically, the information encoded in DNA allows organisms to develop, function and pass traits across generations. Yet DNA alone does not explain how genes are switched on and off in different cells and environments. This regulation is partly controlled by other factors called epigenetics, such as DNA methylation, a chemical modification that can influence gene activity without changing the genetic code itself. 

In mammals, most epigenetic information is erased after fertilisation (when the sperm and egg fuse), preventing the widespread inheritance of acquired epigenetic states between generations. However, this type of resetting appears to be absent in the invertebrate animals, such as worms, corals, sea anemones or sea urchins. 

In this study, the scientists experimentally removed DNA methylation in a sea anemone (Nematostella vectensis) to test what happens when these epigenetic patterns are disrupted. Surprisingly, animals developed normally despite losing most of their DNA methylation. Rather than causing major defects in gene regulation, methylation loss mainly unleashed hidden “jumping genes” or “selfish genes”, embedded within active genes. If left unchecked, these genetic parasites can insert themselves into important genes and regulatory regions, potentially disrupting normal development and threatening genome stability. 

Dr Alex de Mendoza, Reader in Evolutionary Epigenomics at Queen Mary explains: 

“Because these animals lack the extensive epigenetic resetting that occurs after fertilisation in mammals, some abnormal methylation states persisted in the offspring. These inherited epigenetic changes altered how genes are switched on in the next generation, demonstrating that experimentally induced epigenetic variation can be transmitted across generations in an animal.” 

The findings suggest that the ancestral role of DNA methylation in animals was not primarily to regulate gene expression, but to protect active genes from disruptive jumping genes. In mammals, this same molecular system has since been recruited for a wide range of functions, including regulating development and silencing one of the two X chromosomes in females. The study therefore provides a glimpse into the evolutionary origins of important regulatory systems. Moreover, the work also reveals how incomplete epigenetic resetting can allow heritable variation to persist across generations without requiring genetic changes, providing potential raw material for evolutionary change. This work shows how more ancient systems of gene regulation can transmit information through generations.

LOS ANGELES – June 2, 2026 – A new global study has found that people without access to clean drinking water are significantly more likely to experience food insecurity and food safety threats, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated global action to address these issues together.

 

The study was published in Nature Food by a team of researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) with expertise in water, food, and public policy. They analyzed survey data from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation World Risk Poll, which included 124,003 respondents from 121 countries across all country-income levels. 

 

The data revealed that, around the world, people who lack clean drinking water also tend to have difficulties with food access and food safety. 

 

“Even if you live in a wealthy country, if you lack access to clean drinking water, you are more likely to lack access to food,” said Wändi Bruine de Bruin, lead author of the study. Bruine de Bruin is Provost Professor of Public Policy, Psychology, and Behavioral Science at the USC Price School of Public Policy, and Director, Behavioral Science and Policy Initiative, at the USC Schaeffer Institute for Public Policy & Government Service.

 

Coordinated Action Required

 

Researchers say the results demonstrate why governments, humanitarian organizations, and public health leaders should address water and food insecurity together rather than as separate issues.

 

"Water insecurity, food insecurity, and food safety are too often siloed as distinct challenges — and mistakenly presumed to be burdens borne only by low- and middle-income nations,” said Rachael McDonnell, Deputy Director General, International Water Management Institute, and one of the study’s co-authors. “Addressing this interconnected crisis demands that global, national, and local institutions transcend the structural and political barriers that have long fragmented coordinated action across the water-food nexus.”

The researchers suggest several reasons why people who lack clean drinking water also experience problems with accessing safe and sufficient food:

 

  • Problems with water and food might be caused by environmental factors, such as poor infrastructure, climate change, poverty, homelessness, and war;
     

  • Without clean drinking water, it is difficult to prepare food safely, if at all; and
     

  • Spending more money and time on getting food means spending less money and time on getting clean water. 

 

Proposed Solutions

 

The study calls for expanded investments in clean water infrastructure, sanitation systems, and community-based public health programs, particularly in vulnerable and underserved regions. Researchers also encouraged policymakers to strengthen collaboration across water, food and other sectors to better address overlapping challenges.

 

Public health experts warn that climate change, population growth, and increasing pressure on water resources could intensify these risks in the coming decades. Drought, extreme weather, and declining freshwater supplies may make both water insecurity and food insecurity more common, particularly in low-resource communities.

 

The findings add to a growing body of evidence showing that access to clean drinking water is fundamental not only for health and sanitation but for nutrition, food safety, and economic stability.

 

Researchers hope the study will encourage policymakers and international organizations to prioritize comprehensive strategies that protect both water and food systems.

 

“Access to clean drinking water is a basic human necessity,” the study concluded. “Ensuring safe water access is critical to improving food security, reducing health risks, and supporting healthier communities worldwide.”
