The EU got access to Anthropic's most powerful model, three months later

The EU's cybersecurity agency ENISA has gained access to Anthropic's Mythos 5, one of the most powerful AI technologies with disruptive cyber capabilities, three months after it was released to selected partners.

Brussels has finally obtained access to Anthropic's most powerful model, whose availability had been restricted due to its advanced hacking capabilities. But the request took over three months to bear fruit.

"Following our constructive engagement with Anthropic, we can confirm that the EU's cybersecurity agency ENISA has been granted access to Mythos 5 and is testing it now," said the European Commission's spokesperson for tech sovereignty, Thomas Regnier.

In April, the leading AI lab launched a preview of Mythos 5, a model capable of identifying and exploiting cyber vulnerabilities with unprecedented speed, making it a formidable hacking tool.

Given its cybersecurity implications, Anthropic restricted access to the model to a select number of partners via Project Glasswing, run in collaboration with the US government.

The programme started with around 50 organisations in April before Anthropic expanded it by some 150 more in June, bringing the total to roughly 200 partners. The US government subsequently introduced export control measures barring access to non-American users worldwide — including Anthropic's own employees outside the US.

The move prompted the European Commission to question whether it was discriminatory towards a trusted partner, fuelling concern that Washington was both capable and willing to trigger a "kill switch" on the latest US technologies.

Brussels continued pressing Anthropic for access, which was finally granted on Thursday. The Commission holds significant regulatory powers under the EU AI Act, powers that may make tech companies wary of sharing information that could later surface in infringement proceedings.

"ENISA has previously received access to OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Cyber model. Access was also granted to the latest OpenAI model, GPT-6 Astra," Regnier said.


 

AMD unveils ‘personal super computer’ for new era of computing

The American chipmaker launched what they have described as a ‘personal supercomputer’ in Berlin on Friday, designed and made for a “completely new era of computing” driven by AI.

The supercomputer, called the Threadripper Halo Station, was unveiled at the German tech event Internationale Funkausstellung by AMD Senior Vice President Jack Huynh.

The Threadripper Halo is an ultra-high-performance workstation equipped with up to two terabytes of system memory, up to 576 gigabytes of high bandwidth memory (HBM3E), along with 96 cores of Threadripper Pro, two MI350P data centre accelerators, all supported by liquid cooling.

Huynh said the new supercomputer is the “most powerful workstation in the world”, capable of running AI models with more than a trillion parameters.

The AMD executive gave a brief demonstration of its potential at the event by generating an entire 3D world and flight simulator from a single prompt.

The company’s pitch is to bring data-centre level AI performance and capacity to a desktop format, as demand for AI rapidly grows around the world.

The supercomputer is slated for release early next year, however AMD are yet to reveal how much it will cost. It is expected that it could exceed €100,000, geared towards corporate and institutional budgets rather than as personal computers as originally pitched.

Yet it will give its consumers a platform to deploy large-language models and agentic AI systems themselves rather than rely on increasingly expensive cloud computing.

The Threadripper Halo Station’s direct competitor is the NvidiaDGX Station, with both able to run large AI models in a desktop form, however they differ in how they approach this challenge.

AMD’s supercomputer dominates on memory capacity and bandwidth, offering more than three times as much memory than Nvidia’s, allowing it to run on trillion parameter AI models locally.

However, Nvidia’s offering more seamless integration when moving code from a local workstation to the cloud and, crucially, it is already available, retailing at around €100,000.

Industry analysts see AMD's announcement as a potential catalyst for reshaping the competitive landscape of the local AI computing market.

With cloud AI subscription costs adding up for many institutions and businesses, demand for computers such as the Threadripper Halo Station to run large models on their own infrastructure will continue.

Therefore, AMD's approach of delivering data-centre-class performance using standardised components to lower the barrier to entry could be a major turning point in the expansion of the AI and personal computing sectors.


AI D-Day weather forecast falters under pressure

Today's best weather computers would still have struggled to accurately predict the weather for the D-Day landings, University of Reading research shows.

The new research, accepted in the journal Weather ahead of the release of D-Day blockbuster Pressure, used AI models to produce 50 different forecasts of the storm that famously pushed back the Allies’ invasion of Normandy in June 1944. 

The researchers checked how confident the AI model was about the weather Group Captain James Stagg had to forecast on 5 and 6 June. For 5 June, the day originally planned for the invasion, the model got the storm's position right and correctly predicted poor conditions over Normandy, matching Stagg's own analysis. For 6 June, the model predicted the storm would move towards Norway, bringing calmer weather, albeit much quicker than what really happened.

Professor Andrew Charlton-Perez, lead author of the study at the University of Reading, said: "Captain James Stagg had one of the hardest jobs in history. Get the forecast wrong, the invasion could have failed and the Second World War could have been lost.

“Some Allied meteorologists were insistent the weather would be fine for the invasion to take place as planned on 5 June, after weeks of hot weather. Our research shows Stagg would likely have defied his colleagues and made the same call to delay if he had the AI forecast to support him. The AI pointed to a real risk of dangerous winds on 5 June, enough to justify delaying the invasion by a day.

“The AI incorrectly predicted 6 June would be much calm and clearer than it really was, as soldiers faced more treacherous weather. Captain Stagg believed the conditions were fair enough on 6 June, leading to Eisenhower to give his famous order, "OK, we'll go."

“AI weather forecasts can process huge amounts of data in seconds, but they can still make mistakes. Having a trained meteorologist to make sense of all of the forecast data and make forecasts based on their knowledge and experience remains just as critical today as it was for the D-Day landings."

Where the model went wrong

The extraordinary story of how Captain James Stagg had to determine if the weather would be good enough to let 160,000 troops cross the Channel and storm the beaches of Normandy on 5 June is now the subject of a major Hollywood film called Pressure starring Andrew Scott as Stagg and Brendan Fraser as Eisenhower.

In the film, Stagg has to balance his advice between different forecasting teams who disagree about how a storm in the North Sea will affect the invasion.

Researchers compared the model against what actually happened over the Channel and the Normandy beaches, using weather records from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

  • The model showed the storm clearing away from Britain too quickly on the 6th June. This wrongly suggested that 6 June would be calm and clear, when on the day of the invasion some of the invading forces faced high winds and stormy seas. 

  • Underneath that overall confidence, the wind numbers told a different story. The model still showed a 30% chance the wind would break the safety limit for landing craft on 6 June, a real risk hidden behind its reassuring overall picture.

  • The model also predicted clearer skies than actually happened on 6 June, adding to the false sense that conditions would be fine.

Filling in the gaps

Weather records from 1944 were limited, so the researchers also compare the forecasts with new paper weather logs for the Faroe Islands recently found in an archive at the Met Office. These islands sit close to the path the storm took on its way past Britain, so the readings kept there in 1944 capture the storm at a point the main records miss.

Turning these old paper logs into digital data made it possible to check the storm's strength more closely and showed it may have been slightly stronger than current reconstructions suggest. Digitising more of these historic logs from archives across Europe could let scientists test storms like this one even more precisely in future.

Augmentation not abdication, when using AI in research

An editorial by Charles Branas and Bruce Levine proposes norms for the use of AI in science. The authors distinguish between using AI tools for non-generative tasks, such as data classification or copyediting, and using AI tools to generate scientific ideas or seed research questions. While the former is broadly acceptable, they argue, the latter deserves more scrutiny and should be disclosed in scientific manuscripts. The use of generative AI for the core intellectual, creative, ethical, interpretive, or accountability-bearing work of research, where AI replaces human interpretation and judgement, should be disallowed, according to the authors. Additionally, the authors propose that researchers should not use AI to generate their own initial research ideas, research questions, or to make ethical determinations, risk assessments, or policy recommendations.  

AI can reduce science’s happy accidents and human insights if everyone is relying on the same tools with similar inputs, the authors argue. They note that science should not be unthinkingly optimized, as if it were a manufacturing workflow producing standardized outputs. Science requires a wide diversity of inputs, approaches, and ideas. Generative AI is trained to produce probable outputs based on known patterns and trained on existing data, whereas scientific breakthroughs often require departing from prior assumptions and breaking free of typical patterns. Serendipity counts in science.

According to the authors, the originating research question and final evidentiary judgment in every scientific publication should be produced by human minds. 

 Republican convention: Trump defends Iran war, attacks Democrats and promises voters cash

President Donald Trump, at Wednesday's Republican midterm convention, promised $5,000 to every American adult if Republicans retain control of Congress in November, while defending US war in Iran and antagonising Democrats.

During a long speech at a Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, Donald Trump sought to revitalise his conservative base, defending the unpopular war in Iran while trying to keep control of Congress in the November midterm elections by promising cash to every adult.

Trump strongly defended the Iran war, predicting victory and linking it directly to lower oil prices — before suggesting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz should be renamed after him.

"Food prices and almost every other item are rapidly going down. And by the way, oil will be going down as soon as we win the war with Iran, which is taking place right now," Trump said.

But Trump appeared to acknowledge the war had taken a toll on the US economy. "We were doing great," he said, before turning to his economic advisers and telling them, "I hate to do this to you." He then explained that he had felt compelled to launch the conflict because Iran was perhaps "two, maybe three weeks away from having a nuclear weapon."

Trump also echoed other Republicans at the convention stirring up what he said was a wave of communism threatening the United States.

"It's going to be a communist country if they win," he warned.

"Your vote will decide whether our country stumbles at the starting gate of the next 250 years or surges forward and never ever looks back," he said.

Trump's $5,000 gambit

Donald Trump is betting on an extraordinary promise to shore up his party’s fortunes ahead of the November midterm elections: if Republicans keep control of the House and Senate, every American adult will receive cash.

"So if the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend," Trump told Republicans in Texas, as the party struggles in polls against the Democrats.

Within an hour, Vice President JD Vance appeared to try to walk back Trump’s proposal — at least in part — by suggesting the dividend payments would not go to the wealthy. Vance suggested it could be paid for by US tariff revenues, though the suggested payment dwarfs what the US has taken in through the protectionist measures.

The promise would likely cost more than $1 trillion (€860bn) and require congressional approval, and would further exacerbate the country’s nearly $1.8 trillion (€1.55tr) annual budget deficit and concerns about inflation.

The sum would far exceed US tariff revenues even before the Supreme Court tossed much of the president’s tariff program last year.

He did not say where the money would come from, citing only that "our country is making so much money."

The national debt last month topped $40 trillion (€34.4tr) for the first time.

'I'm on the ballot'

Doubling down on his bet that he can help Republicans defy opinion polls and retain both houses of Congress on 3 November, Trump said: "I'm asking you to pretend that I'm on the ballot."

"I'm on the ballot, I'm on the ballot — just one more time," he told the crowd.

Opinion polls overwhelmingly show that Trump's approval ratings are in the low 30s, as voters become increasingly angry about high prices and the war he launched against Iran.

Trump has frequently lamented that, during the modern era, the president’s party almost always loses seats in Congress during the midterms, and he has looked for unorthodox ways to defy the trend, including this week’s convention.

"We’re going to change that," Trump said. "There’s no reason for it."


The Trump dividend: What $5,000 would cost and what it could cover

What would Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend buy — and could the US afford its estimated $1.2 trillion cost?

The US president has promised to give every adult citizen a $5,000 (€4,290) payment if Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate

The proposal could cost almost $1.2 trillion (€1.03 trillion), exceeding the Pentagon’s full 2026 budget request.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend,” Trump told the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, as the party struggles in the polls against the Democrats.

He compared the payments with the dividends distributed by companies to their shareholders, citing “our tremendous strength and success economically”.

Within an hour, Vice President JD Vance appeared to scale back Trump’s proposal, at least in part, by suggesting that wealthy Americans would not receive the payments.

The US had around 240 million adult citizens at the time of the 2024 presidential election, including 174 million registered voters, according to the latest comprehensive US Census Bureau figures. Only about 70% of the voting-age population was registered to vote.

Giving every adult citizen $5,000 would therefore cost almost $1.2 trillion. That is around $220 billion (€189bn) more than the Pentagon’s entire $961 billion (€825bn) budget request for 2026, according to figures by the Congressional Budget Office. Limiting the payment to registered voters would cost around $870 billion.

A $5,000 cheque would give each adult more than they received through the two rounds of direct federal payments approved during Trump’s first term.

What could it cover?

Average US household spending was $78,535 (€67,400) in 2024, or $6,545 (€5,620) a month, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If two adults sharing a home each received $5,000 (€4,290), their combined payment of $10,000 (€8,580) would cover around 11 months of an average household’s total food spending, or about 18 months of grocery spending. These calculations use 2024 expenditure figures adjusted for the 6.45% increase in consumer prices by July 2026.

Housing was the largest expense, accounting for 33.4% of the average household budget. Households spent $26,266 (€22,540) on housing in 2024, equivalent to around $27,960 (€24,000) in July 2026 prices. Two $5,000 payments would therefore cover just over four months of average housing costs.

The combined payment could also cover around eight-and-a-half months of average transport costs or 18 months of healthcare spending. At almost six times the average household’s annual education spending, it could theoretically cover nearly six years of those costs.

However, the education figure is an average across all households, including those with little or no education spending.

What would it cost?

Trump’s proposal comes shortly after the country’s national debt passed $40 trillion (€34.3 trillion) for the first time. The US is also running an annual budget deficit of nearly $1.8 trillion (€1.54 trillion), while inflation remains a concern.

“The idea that we’ve had fiscal success is backwards and bordering on laughable,” said Marc Goldwein, senior policy director at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a Washington-based think tank. “We don’t have surpluses to give away.”

Concerns about the country’s debt are being compounded by high government borrowing costs.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose above 4.85% on Wednesday, its highest level in nearly three years, before easing slightly, while the 30-year yield climbed to 5.29%, close to the 18-year high of 5.33% reached in August.

Treasury yields help determine borrowing costs across the US economy, so sustained increases can make mortgages and business loans more expensive, slow economic growth and weigh on share prices.

With the government already running a large deficit, it remains unclear how the proposed payments would be financed.

Vance suggested that they could be funded using US tariff revenue.

The government expects to collect about $406 billion (€348 billion) in customs duties during the 2026 fiscal year, according to the US Treasury Department. This includes all customs duties, not only tariffs introduced by Trump.

That would cover only around a third of the estimated $1.18 trillion (€1.01 trillion) cost of paying every adult citizen $5,000 (€4,290). Even limiting the payments to the country’s 174 million registered voters would cost around $870 billion (€747 billion) — more than twice the projected annual customs revenue.

When Trump discussed a similar payment earlier this year, he proposed a $2,000 (€1,720) dividend and said he did not believe he needed congressional approval.

Last year, Trump gave members of the military a $1,776 (€1,520) cheque that he called a “warrior dividend”.

“I will get a bill ready so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the November 3rd election,” Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio wrote on X late Wednesday. “Because Republicans (and America) will win!”

However, Congress would need to approve the proposed payments.

Trump’s proposal would be legal because the payment would be available regardless of how someone voted — or whether they voted at all — according to New Mexico-based lawyer John Day.

“This is a campaign promise,” Day said. “It’s not a payment to individuals to try to get them to vote in a particular way.”

Republicans are on the defensive as they seek to protect their narrow House majority against strong political headwinds. Trump is unpopular and polls indicate that most Americans oppose the war in Iran. Even the Senate, which Republicans once appeared well placed to retain, is now considered competitive.

 

Finland completes work on 200km fence along border with Russia

Helsinki says the fence will help protect NATO's longest border as concerns grow over Russian hybrid activity and the potential use of migration to exert pressure on the country.

Finland completed a 200-kilometre security fence along its border with Russia, strengthening NATO’s longest frontier with a country's accused of intensified hybrid attacks on Europe.

The project was launched after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine transformed Finland’s security environment and prompted the country to abandon decades of military non-alignment and join NATO in April 2023.

Later that year, more than 1,300 migrants without visas arrived at Finland’s eastern border. Helsinki accused Moscow of “hybrid warfare” by orchestrating the movement of third-country nationals towards the frontier, a charge the Kremlin denied.

Finland shut its land border with Russia in late 2023. Apart from a brief reopening of two crossings that December, the frontier has remained closed ever since.

“Today, it is calm but tense, and we really don't know about tomorrow,” Interior Minister Mari Rantanen told reporters on Monday at a media event near the Nuijamaa border crossing in south-eastern Finland.

“It can change really rapidly and that is why we need to be very prepared.”

The 4.5-metre-high fence has been built in sections and is equipped with cameras and sensors.

It covers 200 kilometres of Finland’s 1,340-kilometre frontier with Russia, with most of the barrier concentrated in the southeast.

“This is one part of our border security and it is helping us for surveillance, but also keeping people out of Finnish territory if needed,” Rantanen said.

The new fence cost €356 million, with an estimated €2-3 million in annual maintenance costs, according to Finnish border authorities.

Despite rapid advances in drone technology, a physical barrier was still “viewed as the best solution for crowd control,” Border Guard project manager Erkki Matilainen said.

Rantanen said the fence could be extended further and called for greater EU financial support for countries along the bloc’s eastern frontier.

“What we particularly need is EU funding for eastern member states so that projects like this can be financed,” she said.

Last week, Helsinki proposed extending its Border Security Act until the end of 2028.

The legislation allows Finland, under exceptional circumstances, to restrict the reception of asylum applications in limited areas of the border when its sovereignty or national security is deemed to be under threat.

The law has proved controversial, with legal experts warning that it risks breaching Finland’s international human rights obligations and EU law.

Similar barriers have been built elsewhere along NATO and the EU’s eastern flank, as countries bordering Russia and Belarus strengthen their frontiers.

  

At least three killed in Russian strikes on Ukraine while Zelenskyy is in Canada for talks

Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said they had carried out their deepest strike inside Russia, with drones travelling 3,000 km to target two gas condensate plants, the Novy Urengoy and Purovsky plants, located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, one of Russia's key oil and gas regions.

As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrives in Canada for talks with leader Mark Carney, Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange fire.

At least three people were killed in Russian overnight attacks. Ukraine's Armed Forces reported that Moscow attacked Ukraine with 149 drones overnight from Wednesday into Thursday, 128 of which were intercepted. The statement added that they had been launched from Russian cities including Kursk, Millerovo and from the temporarily occupied region of Donetsk and Hvardiiske in Crimea, striking 13 locations.

A late Russian attack on a shopping center car park in Sumy killed at least three people and injured 14 including a teenager, on Wednesday, Oleh Hryhorov, Head of Sumy Oblast Military Administration said on Telegram.

Attacks on the eastern city of Kharkiv have left at least two people injured, after a residential buildings were damaged by drones, according to the city's mayor Ihor Terekhov.

Another large scale attack hitting residential building in the central city of Kryvyi Rih left two people in critical condition, its Head of Kryvyi Rih Defence Council, Oleksandr Vilkul said on Telegram.

Four firefighters have been hospitalised after responding to a blaze on a market in the Western city of Khmelnytskyi, sparked by fallen debris from a Russian drone attack. The firefighters were injured in a secondary explosion, officials reported.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said that they had managed their deepest strike inside Russia, as their drones travelled 3,000 km to strike two gas condensate plants, the Novy Urengoy and Purovsky, located in one of Russia's key oil and gas regions; the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug region.

Ukrainian media reported that Russian Telegram media channels had said Ukraine launched a drone attack on the Republic of Dagestan.

The southern coastal city of Sochi also reportedly came under attack by Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessels sparking multiple fires, according to Russian authorities. Russian media said residents also reported explosions on the port Caspian sea city of Makhachkala, it is known for its handling of dry and liquid cargo, residents also reported a lack of air raid warnings.

Zelenskyy travels to Canada

As Russia and Ukraine trade fire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Canada on Wednesday to hold talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as he hopes to build a closer relationship with his allies.

According to a statement by Carney, Zelenskyy's visit "will focus on shared priorities between Canada and Ukraine, including deepening defence, economic, and energy cooperation."

Carney added:"It will also address the human cost of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and build on the strong people-to-people ties that connect our countries," and that Canada "remains steadfast in our commitment to support Ukraine's defence, recovery, and reconstruction."

Zelenskyy and his wife, Olena Zelenska, are scheduled to stay in Canada until Friday, with events in Calgary, Toronto and North Bay on the agenda, as well as a meeting with Cabinet members in Banff, Alberta.

Zelenskyy travelled from Moldova to Oslo to attend the funeral of Norway's King Harald V.

A plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Moldova to Oslo was nearly hit by a drone, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said on Wednesday.

"His flight was almost hit by a drone when it was taking off from Moldova. That is the reality he lives in," Store told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

The Norwegian Prime Minister did not provide further details about the incident.

"I asked him how his night had been, and he said it had not been a good night because he had been on the phone receiving updates about where the missiles had struck," Store told NRK.

"It is a very dramatic situation. It makes a strong impression."

Zelenskyy arrived in Oslo on Tuesday evening ahead of the funeral of Norway's King Harald V. He held talks with Store, Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide on Norwegian military assistance to Ukraine, including air defence support, as well as civilian aid.

Zelenskyy left Norway following the funeral and travelled to Canada for talks with leaders there, Store told NRK.

Store did not provide further details about the outcome of the talks.

"We're not there yet. Industry is working together to see whether it is possible to provide air defence systems for Ukraine, but also to find an industrial solution that would allow them to build air defence systems themselves. To put it simply, they have holes in the roof."

Russia’s latest drone incursion into Moldova and NATO airspace comes as Moscow increasingly deploys jet-powered attack drones, blurring the line between traditional UAVs and low-cost cruise missiles and making them much harder to intercept.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plane was preparing to leave ChiÈ™inău for Oslo on Tuesday afternoon when Moldova’s military detected an unmanned aerial vehicle in the country’s airspace.

What initially appeared to be another Russian drone incursion took on greater significance the following day, when Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre revealed that Zelenskyy’s plane had almost been hit by a drone.

“His flight was almost hit by a drone when it was taking off from Moldova. That is the reality he lives in,” Støre told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

The timeline shows how the events unfolded.

Moldovan military first detected an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle at 4:20 pm EEST (3:20 CEST).

Moldovan officials confirmed to Euronews that the country’s airspace was closed shortly after 4:30 pm.

“The airspace was closed to protect the aircraft flying over Moldova at the time - three departures and four arrivals were delayed as a result.”

By 4:37 pm, Romania’s Defence Ministry said the drone crossed into Romanian — and therefore NATO — airspace.

Two minutes later two Spanish F-18 fighter jets deployed as part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission took off to monitor it.

The jets did not intercept the drone. Romanian radar continued to track it until 5:02 pm, when contact was lost.

Five minutes later at 5:07 pm the drone was detected again over Moldova, where it later crashed about 25 km east of the Romanian border.

According to Moldovan officials, the flight restrictions were lifted after 5:20 pm, when authorities confirmed the drone had come down and exploded near Mihăilenii Vechi, in the Râșcani district, about 160 km from Chișinău International Airport.

“For the same reason, the plane of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took off from ChiÈ™inău International Airport later than scheduled," officials said.

According to monitoring channels, Zelenskyy’s plane took off from ChiÈ™inău around 5:57 pm.

For much of Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine that began in early 2022, Zelenskyy has travelled abroad primarily through Poland, with Rzeszów serving as a regular departure point.

In recent months, however, his presidential aircraft has also begun using Chișinău more frequently for foreign trips.

What type of drone was it?

The exact model of the drone involved in Moldova and Romania has not been officially established.

Ukrainian open-source monitoring channels identified it as a Geran-4, one of Russia’s newer jet-powered attack drones.

The Geran-4 and Geran-5 are among the newest additions to Russia’s expanding Geran family, although they differ significantly in design and capabilities.

The Geran-4 has a wingspan of about three metres and is roughly 3.5 metres long. Its maximum take-off weight is around 450 kilograms.

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the Geran-4 can reach speeds of up to 500 km/h and carry a warhead weighing between 50 and 90 kilograms.

Russia has recently stepped up its use of jet-powered drones, including in complex barrages alongside ballistic and cruise missiles designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences.

Their speed makes them much harder to intercept than conventional Shahed-type drones, particularly for the mobile fire groups and other relatively inexpensive systems Ukraine has relied on to counter slower-moving UAVs.

Ukraine is instead forced to use scarce and considerably more expensive air-defence missiles against the faster threats, putting additional pressure on already limited interceptor stocks.

Several Ukrainian companies have reportedly begun testing missiles specifically designed to shoot down the new jet-powered Geran models.

'The days of safety are over': Russian airports face record closures

Ukraine's drone campaign forced an average of 32 airport closures a day across 32 Russian airports including Moscow and St Petersburg, with summer totals already exceeding all of 2025, as Zelenskyy warned airlines and insurers that "the days of safety in Russia's skies are over."

Russian airports temporarily closed 993 times in August — an average of 32 times a day — as Ukrainian drone operations forced repeated airspace shutdowns across the country.

Industry data shows it was the most disruptive month for Russian civil aviation since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in early 2022.

Figures from aviation security firm Osprey Flight Solutions state that restrictions were imposed at 32 airports in August, including Moscow and St Petersburg.

Over the summer as a whole, 2,182 closures were recorded — already exceeding the full-year total for 2025.

The Insider, an investigative Russian outlet, calculated that the August closures reached more than six times the 2025 monthly average.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned airlines and insurers on 1 September that Russian airspace "is becoming completely unsafe" for civil aviation.

"We in Ukraine do not want innocent lives to be lost. That's why we are warning our partners: the days of safety in Russia's skies are over," Zelenskyy said.

Andriy Zagorodnyuk, a former Ukrainian defence minister, said the goal was not to attack civilian aircraft but to create lasting uncertainty.

"Ukraine is not seeking to shoot down civilian aircraft, but it is making Russia's skies unsafe for flying," he said in last week's comments to Ukrainska Pravda.

The trigger for airport closures is the activation of what Russia calls the "Kover" — Russian for "carpet" — protocol, an air defence procedure designed for rare emergencies that grounds or redirects all civil aircraft when a drone threat is detected in the area.

Military analyst Mykhailo Samus, of the Centre for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, said airport closures were part of a broader strategy of economic exhaustion, alongside rising insurance premiums, the withdrawal of foreign carriers and reduced domestic mobility.

"Airport closures are the new reality for Russian aviation," he said.

'Impossible to take off or land'

Russia's Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin said no significant disruptions to civil aviation would be allowed, yet operational data contradict his statement.

In the first three days of September, an average of 86 flights per day were cancelled in Russia, according to FlightRadar24 — a level comparable to August's worst periods.

On the most severe nights around Moscow, between 77 and more than 100 flights were delayed or cancelled in a single overnight period.

Passengers have documented the disruption in detail on social media and in regional news feeds.

"We've been sitting on the plane for an hour, Vnukovo has been closed, nobody is explaining anything," one traveller wrote on Telegram.

"Pulkovo won't let the flight depart, Moscow won't receive it." another posted. A third passenger said, "The online board is all red, it's impossible to take off or land."

Some foreign carriers that had continued to fly to Russia after the full-scale invasion have since adjusted routes or suspended operations.

Changes have affected Pegasus, Flydubai and Air India, according to industry media.

Passenger numbers on the Moscow-St Petersburg route have fallen by 20-23%, while rail demand has risen by roughly 20% in response.

The investigative outlet Agentstvo has noted that the aviation disruption overlaps with pressure on other parts of the Russian economy, including declining oil refining capacity, higher logistics costs and interruptions to warehouse operations caused by Ukrainian drone strikes on industrial facilities.
