On September 18th, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted for imposing sanctions on Israel for the first time in 42 years! The global majority affirmed that the historic ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) triggers the legal obligation of all states to end complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid regime. 

It is now time for us, grassroots organizations, movements and solidarity groups, as well as individuals who have been mobilizing to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza and to dismantle its decades long apartheid and settler-colonial regime against all Palestinians, to take this resolution from being a promise on paper to a global reality!

Now is the time to pressure your government to respect its obligations under international law, pay heed to the unified Palestinian civil society call and:

  1. Impose a mandatory and comprehensive two-way military embargo on Israel to stop all export, import and transfer of weapons. This is a legal obligation, not a choice. 
  2. Impose lawful and targeted sanctions, including ending diplomatic relations with Israel, imposing financial sanctions, suspension of trade and cooperation agreements with Israel. 
  3. End direct and indirect oil, gas and other energy trade with Israel. 
  4. Legislate on preventing businesses domiciled within the state jurisdiction from entering into or continuing agreements with Israeli and international companies exacerbating and profiting from Israel’s apartheid and illegal occupation.
  5. End institutional academic, cultural, sports and other ties with Israel that whitewash its genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.
  6. Activate universal jurisdiction mechanisms to hold suspected perpetrators of international crimes accountable in your domestic courts.
  7. Inspect and deny docking permission to ships suspected of carrying military supplies to Israel. 

As Israel’s livestreamed genocide in Gaza against 2.3 million Palestinians reaches its first anniversary, as its repression and ethnic cleansing in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, intensify, and as it pushes the region in a catastrophic direction, join us in pressuring governments, especially those in the Global South, to turn their words into actions. Push your government to isolate genocidal Israel and hold it accountable for its crimes. Failing to do so would plunge us all into a world where “might makes right”. 

As heads of state gather at the UN General Assembly for the annual high level debate starting 24th September, build local and regional campaigns on the above listed demands.
