Women protest against Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul convention, the landmark international treaty to prevent violence against women and promote equality. The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has long attacked women’s rights and gender equality, suggesting that feminists ‘reject the concept of motherhood’, taking an anti-abortion stance and claiming that gender equality is ‘against nature’.

A woman holds a rose at the funeral of Luisa Toledo Sepúlveda, who died this week. Toledo, whose image is on the poster, was mother to three children killed fighting against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. She dedicated her life to fighting for justice for her children.

Supporters of the pro-democracy Hirak movement give a press conference in Algiers. The government has banned Hirak demonstrations and has stepped up legal proceedings against opponents, activists, journalists and academics. This week Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune said he had ordered the release of 101 members of the protest movement that forced his predecessor Abdelaziz Bouteflika to step down.

German NGO Sea-Watch protests in Burriana, Spain, against the Italian parliament’s planned vote on renewing cooperation with Libya and funding the Libyan coastguard. A new report by Amnesty International says it has more than 50 fresh accounts alleging severe beatings, sexual violence, extortion and forced labour at Libyan detention centres, used to house people who have been forcibly returned after trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean.

Gypsies and Travellers rally against the police, crime, sentencing and courts bill in London. If passed, section 4 of the bill will make ‘residing or intending to reside on land without the permission of the owner or occupier’ a new criminal offence.

Colombian police officers arrest demonstrators protesting against the government in Cali, in the west of the country. Since protesters first took to the streets of Colombia’s cities in late April, calling on the government to address entrenched inequality, hundreds of people have been reported missing. Some have eventually reappeared, but others have not been seen again: 77 people have vanished since the start of the unrest.

Civilians sheltering in camps on the border between Turkey and Syria call for the vital Bab al-Hawa border crossing to be kept open for aid transfers. The crossing is Syria’s last lifeline, through which vital UN aid supplies for 3.4 million people living in the war-torn north-west of the country arrive.
