Petronas Moves to Appraise Major Oil Discovery Offshore Malaysia

Malaysia’s state-owned Petronas is preparing to drill an appraisal well at its major Megah oil discovery offshore Sabah as it moves to establish the size and commercial potential of one of the country’s most significant recent finds.

The Megah-2 appraisal well will target the 2025 Megah discovery in Deepwater Block 3K. Industry estimates have put the discovery at around 200 million to 300 million barrels, although Petronas has yet to publish an official recoverable resource estimate.

Malaysia’s Marine Department issued a notice in late September covering drilling operations at Megah-2. The West Capella, an ultra-deepwater drillship capable of operating in water depths of up to 10,000 feet, has reportedly been lined up for the campaign.

Petronas officially identified Megah-1 as one of two Malaysian exploration discoveries made during the first half of 2025, saying the finds strengthened the country’s domestic oil portfolio.

The appraisal effort is being supported by a major seismic reprocessing campaign from TGS. The company is reprocessing approximately 514 square kilometers of 3D seismic data over the Megah discovery using advanced full-waveform inversion and depth-imaging technology. Processing began in July, with final data expected in April 2027.

Megah-2 is expected to provide further information on reservoir quality, fluids and the potential scale of a commercial development.

The discovery also comes as Malaysia seeks to unlock more of its deepwater potential. Petronas estimates that more than 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent remain to be discovered in Malaysian deepwater acreage, with Sabah holding the largest share of that potential.
