Danger: Trump Fires Defense Policy Board
Over the holiday weekend here in the US many of us gorged on the usual Thanksgiving delicacies, but this year we also got to enjoy the added delights of laughing at Donald Trump ranting about election fraud from behind his tiny desk and the proliferation of the #DiaperDon hashtag. Ah, what good fun.
But as Cenk points out in this YouTube Live clip recorded over the weekend, behind the scenes the news wasn’t nearly so hilarious, as Trump removed several members of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board and also sought to change Federal government rules to make it easier to fire civil service workers and replace them with political appointees.
Cenk worries that the Defense Policy Board firings represent the next step, begun with the firing of the Defense Secretary, of Trump’s attempt at a military coup, having failed to win the election or steal it through legislative or judicial trickery. The reason, Cenk says, is that Trump is desperate to stay in office to forestall having to pay off his massive debts, and if that means destroying democracy, well, you know what they say about omelets and eggs.
Cenk fears that the move to fire civil servants en masse will have a greater chance of success, and will install Trump loyalists up and down the ranks of the federal bureaucracy. Democrats, serial bunglers that they are, he says, could easily let it happen, and then all these Trumpists in key positions throughout the government could actively work to undermine a Biden administration from within. Will it happen? For the answer to that question we’ll just have to wait and see.
