Insolvencies in Germany at highest since 2013

The number of corporate insolvencies in Germany rose sharply again in June, official data showed on Friday.
The slight easing seen in May did not continue, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
Local courts registered 2,266 applications for corporate insolvency, up 15.8% year-on-year. The number of consumer insolvencies also increased, rising 5.1% to 6,839 cases.
This brings the total number of corporate insolvency applications in the first half of 2026 to 12,812. According to the statistical office, this is the highest half-year figure since 2013.
Compared with the same period a year earlier, this was an increase of 6.7%. Creditors' claims amounted to around €18.5 billion ($21.5 billion) in the first six months, down from €28.2 billion a year earlier.
This means that on average the insolvencies this year involved smaller sums.
Measured per 10,000 companies, 36.2 became insolvent in the first half of the year. Corporate insolvencies were particularly frequent in the transport and storage sector (71.6 cases per 10,000 businesses) as well as in the hospitality and construction sectors (59.6 and 53.4 cases respectively).
Insolvency applications are only included in the statistics after an initial decision by the insolvency court and the actual filing therefore often dates back by around three months.
