US official says Greenland agreement to be signed on Tuesday

The United States, Denmark and Greenland are set to sign an agreement on Tuesday regarding the dispute over the strategically important Arctic island, US officials have told dpa.
President Donald Trump is due to meet with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen to formalize the new agreement, the White House official said on Monday.
The arrangement which is intended to guarantee and defend the security of both Greenland and the US, the official said.
The US official did not specify a time or a specific location for the signing. However, it is expected to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where Trump is due to deliver a speech on Tuesday.
A few days ago, the US, Denmark and Greenland unexpectedly announced a breakthrough in the dispute over the island. Exactly what had been agreed remained unclear at first.
According to Trump, the agreement secures the US far-reaching powers and control over the Arctic island, which, although largely autonomous, is part of Danish territory.
Neither the Danish nor the Greenlandic side has so far confirmed Trump's account in these terms.
Trump threatened to annex Greenland on several occasions in the past - thereby not only snubbing NATO partner Denmark, but also raising doubts about the unity of the Western military alliance.
Trump justified his proposal on the grounds of US security interests, arguing that enemies of the US, such as China and Russia, were seeking to bring the island under their control - and that Denmark was powerless to prevent it.

The United States, Denmark and Greenland will on Tuesday sign the announced US security deal for Greenland on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Denmark's government said.
US President Donald Trump said last Friday that the arrangement will give America "permanent control" over security for Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic that he has long coveted.
The office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that she, Trump and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen would sign the deal at 1430 GMT in the UN building in New York.
Frederiksen said Monday that the agreement, which has not been published, "recognises" the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
"It is a good agreement from a Danish point of view," she told Danish radio DR from New York.
"And when it benefits the Nordic countries and security in the Arctic region, it also benefits NATO and Europe."
Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly insisted that the United States needs to control Greenland for strategic reasons, alarming NATO ally Denmark and sparking fierce pushback from the alliance.
According to Washington, the agreement ensures that China and Russia will not be able to establish military bases in Greenland or carry out sensitive investments there without its consent.
"This is something we have agreed on with the Americans for a very, very long time: the Arctic region, the North Atlantic, constitute an important defence zone for all members of the NATO alliance," Frederiksen said.

Is there a resolution on Greenland? President Trump’s pressure campaign began in December 2024, right after he won re-election, when he began talking about the need for US ownership and control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
“It was absolutely necessary,” he said. By early 2025, in his State of the Union address, he said the US would get Greenland “one way or another,” citing what he described as the scale of the security challenge it posed to the world.
This led to frantic diplomacy and concerns about the very real prospect of one NATO country considering the invasion of another. To the extent that several European militaries deployed a multinational naval mission to Greenland, ostensibly to assess the level of security and the threat posed by outside actors.
