France called for solidarity between the United States and Europe at a meeting of trade ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) leading Western industrialized nations on Wednesday, after President Donald Trump said he would hike US tariffs on EU car and truck exports.

French Trade Minister Nicolas Forissier stressed the importance of trans-Atlantic relations at the end of the G7 talks in Paris.

"They must continue to build on trust, predictability, mutual respect, and listening to one another. This naturally leaves no room for unilateral decisions or threats that create uncertainty and call into question carefully established balances," Forissier said.

On Friday, Trump announced his intention to raise tariffs on cars and trucks exported to the US from the EU from 15% to 25%, accusing the bloc of failing to adhere to a trade agreement struck last July.
