Georgia Power Starts 128-MW Battery Storage Facility Near Robins AFB
Georgia Power has started commercial operations at its 128-megawatt Robins Battery Facility near Warner Robins, Georgia, expanding the utility’s rapidly growing fleet of grid-scale energy storage projects.
The battery energy storage system can discharge at full capacity for up to four hours, allowing it to shift electricity from periods of lower demand to times when the grid is under greater pressure. At maximum output, that translates into as much as 512 MWh of stored energy delivered over a four-hour period.
The facility is paired with the nearby Robins Solar Facility, allowing solar generation to be stored and dispatched later when electricity demand is higher, including during peak periods when solar output may be limited.
Burns & McDonnell served as engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the battery project, which Georgia Power said was delivered on schedule.
The Robins project is one of four battery storage facilities approved as part of Georgia Power’s 2023 Integrated Resource Plan update. The utility has already completed facilities in Cherokee and Lowndes counties with a combined 579.5 MW of capacity, while another 57.5-MW project in Floyd County is nearing completion.
Together with the 128-MW Robins facility, those four projects represent 765 MW of new battery storage capacity.
Georgia Power’s storage ambitions extend well beyond that initial group. State regulators have approved nine additional BESS projects across eight sites that are expected to add more than 3,000 MW of capacity. Projects are planned at existing Plants Bowen, Hammond, McIntosh, Wansley and Yates, as well as stand-alone locations in Hall and McDuffie counties.
The Georgia Public Service Commission has also approved two solar-plus-storage facilities in Laurens and Mitchell counties representing a combined 350 MW of generating capacity.
The expansion comes as Georgia Power prepares for significant growth in electricity demand. Its regulator-approved resource plans include new natural gas generation, battery storage, renewable projects, and power purchase agreements as the utility adds dispatchable capacity to support economic and load growth. Georgia Power’s 2025 resource plan included more than 3,000 MW of new battery storage and 350 MW of solar paired with batteries.
