Budget carrier Ryanair warned the Irish government on October 8 that it will cancel a planned €50mn investment at Shannon Airport and relocate the project to Poland if planning permission for a new maintenance centre is not granted promptly.

The investment covers a new four-bay aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hangar and Engineering Academy at Shannon Airport, which Ryanair announced in July. The development would expand the airline’s existing maintenance operations at Shannon, where a current three-bay hangar supports more than 200 high-skilled engineering and mechanics jobs.

“Ryanair is ready to invest €50m in Shannon and create 300 new high-skilled jobs but we will not accept planning delays or bureaucracy. This is a major opportunity for Shannon and the wider region, building on our existing engineering operation and supporting the next generation of aircraft mechanics. However, if Shannon cannot deliver this project on time, then we will move it and the 300 jobs to Poland,” said Ryanair COO Neal McMahon.

Ryanair said it is due to receive the first of its 300 new Boeing MAX-10 aircraft in early 2027, and that its growing fleet requires additional maintenance capacity by 2028. The airline said construction of the Shannon facility must commence in early 2027.
