Montreal: Constellation 2025 Presents…

anarchistnews.org
Jan 22, 2025

From Constellation
January 16, 2025

Constellation will be back in 2025, but things are going to look a bit different this year! Instead of one weekend, the festival will span an entire week, from May 15th to the 21st. Like last year, we encourage everyone to submit events to the online calendar (to be relaunched soon). We’ll also be organizing two large events on Saturday and Sunday. Keep reading for more info!

As you probably guessed, the Anarchist Bookfair will be happening again–same place, same time, same general idea. Tablers will be able to set up inside and outside CÉDA (no CCGV) with books, zines, art, and other materials relevant to anarchy. We’ll also have access to a handful of rooms in CÉDA and spots in Parc Vinet for book talks, workshops, discussions, reading circles, and more! We’re hoping that the content of events on this day can be a bit more conceptual or theoretical. Think reading circle of your favourite anarchist essay, discussion on an ongoing social struggle, workshop sharing new perspectives on security culture, and all that kind of fun stuff.

As for Sunday, we are excited to host the Montreal Anarchist Skill Faire (10 points if you spotted the bilingual pun). Remember school science fairs? We want to do something similar, but with more anarchy (trifold displays welcome). We call for a tabling event that brings a chaotic and dazzling range of anarchist-relevant skills together with the purpose of sharing it freely. Maybe you want to give tips on protest first aid, provide a hands-on introduction to lockpicking, or teach people how to set up a mesh network. Anything goes, as long as it centres the diffusion of hands-on knowledge and practical skills. There will also be rooms for more intensive, workshop-length skillshares!

Anarchists have had an enduring understanding that theory and practice can’t (and probably shouldn’t) be separated. Ideas incite action, practice inspires theory, and politics influence the types of skills we seek to develop. Theoretical and conceptual conversations will touch on practice and have implications for action. Discussions related to hands-on knowledge and practical skills will be shaped by ideas and be of relevance to theory. We’re organizing Saturday and Sunday along these two themes as an experiment, and we recognize that both are equally important and intrinsically linked to one another.

Kids Zone

We want Constellation 2025 to be engaging and accessible to people of all ages! Once again, childcare and kid-friendly activities will be provided at the Kids Zone in CÉDA. We also encourage festival-goers to organize workshops and skillshares geared toward young people on either Saturday or Sunday.

Get Involved

The table reservation and workshop application forms will be available soon. Check our website or social media pages later this month to learn more. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to reach us at constellationmtl@riseup.net.
Italy: Terrorism charges dropped against ‘Vetriolo’ magazine

From Freedom News UK by Sonia Muñoz Llort

Judge declines prosecution of anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito and 11 others for incitement and subversion

A judge in Italy has declined to indict twelve anarchists associated with the insurrectionary magazine Vetriolo of various incitement and subversion charges. Alfredo Cospito and Michele Fabiani, along with ten others, faced terrorism enhancements on almost all the charges sought by the public prosecutor.

Cospito and his partner Anna Beniamino have been imprisoned for years, along with other comrades accused of clandestine action. In 2013 Cospito was sentenced to ten years and eight months in prison for having shot Roberto Adinolfi, a manager of engineering firm Ansaldo, in the leg. Being already in jail, in June 2006 he was also convicted of having set two explosive devices in front of a Carabinieri police training college in northern Italy.

In 2022 he was moved to the Bancali prison in Sardinia, and subject to a restrictive 41 bis regime of isolation, which human rights organisations have condemned as torture. This has led to a widespread campaign for his release and led him to launch a hunger strike in opposition.

The prosecution of Vetriolo magazine began in November 2023. However, at the hearing on 15 January the judge announced that the indictment sought by the public prosecutor in Perugia would not go forward.

During the hearing, the accused made spontaneous statements to clarify their positions on the entire case against them, as well as for the abolition of the 41 bis regime. Cospito warned that his disturbing prosecution as supposedly having a “top role” in an anarchist organisation “opens wide the gates of 41 bis to anyone who disturbs power”, describing the case as “fundamentally an attack on freedom of thought and of the press”.

Italy: Alfredo Cospito and 11 Other Anarchists Acquitted

From Abolition Media

The investigating judge’s decision came in the afternoon.

There is no place to proceed for Alfredo Cospito and 11 other anarchists. This is what the judge of Perugia, Angela Avila, decided today, January 15, in the afternoon, at the end of the discussion during the preliminary hearing. Cospito and Michele Fabiani from Spoleto, together with the other 10, were charged with various charges of apology and incitement to subversion and of some episodes of damage. In November 2021, the Perugia ROS had applied six precautionary measures against as many exponents of the anarchist sector. The charges were related to the publication of a newspaper considered clandestine, Vetriolo.

Lawyer Flavio Rossi Albertini, who defends Cospito, in the 41 bis at least until next year, declares: “We have obtained a result for which we have fought from the first hour. Here there was a tendency to mystify the free expression of one’s own political opinion, making thought pass for crime. Let us not forget that also thanks to the Sibilla operation, the 41bis was requested for Cospito and now that everyone has been acquitted, as well as in another investigation in Rome that had been used for the 41bis, I hope that this will induce the Minister who will be responsible for this decision, in the event that its renewal is requested, to deny it.”

Satisfaction was also expressed by the lawyer Carmelo Parente, who assists Michele Fabiani: “These are very delicate issues, crimes of opinion can affect everyone, not just the anarchists, it is important that the judge has evaluated them with due care and not considered it configurable.”

Lawyer Caterina Calia is also on the same wavelength: “Years ago they wanted to criminalize all activity attributable to that anarchist zone, but as always we have maintained that none of the crimes that the prosecution had challenged were committed.”

SUSARON STATEMENT CASE, DECEMBER 2024

Today more than ever animal and total liberation!
 Veganism is war!
 Fire to existence!

Prisoners Vegan straight edge anarco nihilists, Caso Susaron (*Panda and Ru)

From Unoffensive Animal

Below is a translation of two of the prisoners from Caso Susaron, translated from spanish:

We hope that our first words represent a push of strength for those who are doubting whether the value of their beautiful actions and their consequences make sense or not.

Two years and almost two months after our captivity, we continue to reaffirm that the path of war and confrontation, with all its bitterness and misfortunes, continues to be the only dignified way of life that we understand as valid.

UPDATE:
In recent months there have been several developments in our case.
Comrade Ru was sentenced to 5 years in prison, with the prosecution and the court denying the possibility of a supervised release on the grounds that he is a danger to society, with no intention of reinsertion.

At the same hearing, happily, comrade Tortuga was released to the street. Sentenced to 5 years of tagged probation, joining comrade Ita.

After some appeals that evidently failed, comrade Ru was transferred to the ex-penitentiary.

This transfer was carried out by the gendarmerie in violation of a court order that the comrade could not be moved until a report on the feasibility of transfer to La Colina was issued.

The comrade was received with open arms by the nihilist prisoner Héctor Herrera, in 3C Street. In the overcrowding and discomfort that is lived in those facilities.

Days later, without any warning and with an absolutely arbitrary criterion, they transferred comrade Panda without warning from La Colina, where he was already settled after months serving his sentence, to the ex-penitentiary.

The report delivered by the gendarmerie justified the transfer of the comrade on the grounds that he would be a negative leader, a danger to the internal regiment of La Colina and that this prison would not have sufficient security to prevent a possible escape.

The next day, Panda is received by Ru and Hector in 3C Street.

We call to participate in all instances of solidarity. Since this new process requires a greater expense in parcels and in managing the intrapenitentiary benefits, meaning a great economic blow for family, friends and relatives.

To close this message: we are still here. Loving our successes and our mistakes, without regrets or hesitation. Clear that no trick of gendarmerie to hit our spirit will generate that we do not smile looking at the facts that led us to this place lost in time.

For our next publication, we’d like to give a voice to anarchists who practice sex-work. We’d love to include your stories and reflections.

Within the network of anarchist friendships that is the projet-evasions, there are several of us who earn money through sex-work. We have the impression that if this is how we earn the money we need to survive within capitalism, it’s not completely by chance, but that it’s linked to our anarchist affinities.

It’s this quesiton that we’re looking to explore in our next publication, and we’d love to include your stories and reflections on the links you see between your choice to practice sex-work and your anarchist thoughts.

Send us your reflections, anecdotes, testimonials and a few words about the context you’re writing from.

It can be short or long, written or drawn, signed or anonymous. You can write in English, German or French.

Abolition Media Response to Kolektiva Censorship

ON GAZA

anarchistnews.org
Jan 22, 2025

From Abolition Media

As the genocidal campaign against Palestinians continues, so have the outcries from supposed anarchists in the West against any expression of solidarity with the Palestinian Resistance. Recently, a post by the Kolektiva moderation team called anarchists who seek to learn from the Palestinian Resistance “deeply delusional” and “dripping with performative machismo.” While our platform was not directly referenced, the same post linked to an article called “Abolition Media’s Authoritarian Entryism,” a hit piece on our media site. We therefore find it necessary to make our intentions clear and to investigate exactly why a site claiming to be anarchist would slander coverage of the Resistance, even if our accusers are too cowardly to mention us by name.

Whether these anti-Resistance “anarchists” are merely ignorant or are intentionally misrepresenting our position, their reasoning is imbued with the liberal Zionist thinking typically found in New York Times editorials. For instance, Kolektiva condemns those who “openly celebrate Operation Al Aqsa Flood, the attack carried out by Palestinian militants on October 7th 2023.” Another recent article in a similar vein, “Towards Another Uprising” refers to October 7th as “the bloody incursion of Hamas into ‘Israel.'” This repudiation of October 7th betrays an opposition toward all forms of resistance of the oppressed. Like the revolts of enslaved people in Nat Turner’s uprising or the anti-colonial revolutions in Haiti and Algeria, October 7th broke through the normality of the daily humiliations and the oppressive violence that permeates everyday existence in a settler colonial society. While this anti-colonial rebellion may not neatly fit the criterion of purity demanded by the Kolektiva armchair critics, the hysteria and outright lies parroted from corporate media about October 7th is a massive endorsement of US State propaganda.

Kolektiva has accused Abolition Media of being “uncritical cheerleaders for authoritarian Islamist paramilitary actors.” This is a distortion of our position about publishing Palestinian Resistance statements, and the factions who are supporting their goals. While publishing such statements should not need an explanation for self-respecting anarchists, we published our reasoning when we wrote a “Statement on Editorial Decisions Regarding Palestine and Anti-Colonial Resistance.” In the statement, we wrote, “As a news source for revolutionary movements we consider it vital to spread the perspectives and action reports of anti-colonial resistance groups, regardless of whether we, as anarchists, are in complete agreement with their politics.” Our stance remains the same today.

Historically, anarchists have formed alliances and expressed solidarity with anti-colonial groups, regardless of differences of ideology. During the Spanish civil war, anarchists formed a pact with the Moroccan Action Committee and the anarchist Pierre Besnard even proposed breaking the anti-colonial leader Abd El Krim out of a French prison on the island of Réunion. Much like the leaders of Hamas, Abd El Krim was a brilliant guerrilla tactician and a devout Muslim, who used Islamic principles to help unify an anti-colonial alliance that proved quite effective in defeating better armed French and Spanish colonizers in the Rif region of Morocco. His victories led to the creation of an autonomous Republic of the Rif in 1921.

Decades later, anarchist BLA fighter Kuwasi Balagoon expressed solidarity with international anti-imperialist struggles, writing, “Imperialism must expand or die, and even as the pigs escalate their military and political offensive, they have lost their grip increasingly throughout this world, despite their wolf tickets, because the peoples of Cuba, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Libya, Angola, Tanzania, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Grenada, and other lands have put their heads and hearts together to devise no nonsense methods to drive the Americans out. If we do the same, we will obtain the same results. In fact, we will obtain greater results, because our liberation would mean a greater decline to imperialism than any of the previous people’s victory and reaction would be weakened to a corresponding extent.”

Speaking from Attica prison in New York state Balagoon euphorically praised Hezbollah’s first attack against the US war machine in Lebanon stating, “I think it’s beautiful! I thought that thing with the truck (the truck bombing in 1982) was incredible… we have a lot to learn from them and we will.”

In the tradition of Kuwasi Balagoon, revolutionary anarchists today are calling for studying the tactics and strategic victories of anti-colonial Resistance in Palestine and applying lessons to Resistance within the belly of the beast. These calls have been dismissed by Kolektiva as “delusional”, “reckless” and “dripping with performative machismo.” It is not delusional to apply anti-colonial tactics within the heart of the empire. It has been only four years since the Minneapolis precinct was set on fire during the George Floyd uprising and in the ’60s and ’70s, these types of armed revolutionary actions were nearly everyday occurrences. To consider these actions to be reckless comes from a position of attachment to the comforts afforded to these so-called anarchists in the West. These comforts can be directly linked to their complicity in the genocide in Gaza and more broadly to the pillaging of the global South and the racism that is used to justify these imperialist conquests. Moreover, to say that calls for direct action against Zionist targets are “dripping with performative machismo” is an insult to all those women who have taken up armed resistance against Zionism, including figures like Layla Khaled and Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, as well as slander to all those female, trans and non-binary anarchist revolutionaries around the world who are committed to fight for the movement.

Finally, Kolektiva asserts that anarchists who propose taking revolutionary actions in support of the Palestinian people “promote a ‘unity of fields’ strategy that imagines themselves as a fifth column of the Iranian military.” Kolektiva is here duplicating a common Zionist smear tactic, asserting that the Palestinian Resistance and all those who express solidarity with the Resistance are controlled by Iran. One need only to read the many first person accounts from Gaza and the West Bank to understand that the Resistance groups of Palestine are a genuinely homegrown phenomenon, supported by and totally enmeshed in their communities. Furthermore, the regional Resistance to imperialism emerged specifically out of Western excesses in Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. It is woeful to see that Kolektiva would try to deploy the ‘outside agitator’ narrative to discredit the resistance and its supporters. This misunderstanding, again, stemming from US and Zionist propaganda, is something Abolition Media is committed to countering with its articles.

Kolektiva is using these belligerent accusations as an excuse to censor anti-imperialist viewpoints from their social media platform, a practice which is the opposite of what anarchists have fought for historically. How far they have come from the legacy of anarchists who, like Emma Goldman in the context of American nationalism during World War I, fought against State censorship.

The counter-revolutionary position of these so-called anarchists who censor support for Palestinian Resistance, coupled with the condemnation by some of these same “anarchists” of Michael Reinoehl for taking up arms against a fascist during the George Floyd uprising, and the clear support many of them have maintained for Ukrainian fascism makes it clear that it would be foolish for Black and Brown people to gamble their freedom with these people. We would like to be very clear to comrades from colonized communities, internally and externally to the imperial core — be extraordinarily careful in your relations with this tendency, as it is fundamentally aligned with the interests of white supremacy, colonial arrogance, and the Euro/American genocidal drive for power consolidation. While enjoying the economic fruits of Palestinian genocide and the brutal destruction of left-wing movements in Central and South America, Kolektiva, and other “anarchists” in the West carry blood on their hands with their clear support for one of the last settler colonial projects in the world.

As the divides between settler and colonized, right and left become more stark in the current political climate, more and more supposed revolutionaries will be forced to show their hands and clearly articulate their positions. It will no longer be possible to hide behind the mask of insufficient ideologoical purity to hide an essentially colonial position. It is a good thing that we will be able to see everyone for who they actually are. At Abolition Media we are proud to uphold the anarchist revolutionary tradition and unapologetically stand on the side of those who are fighting Western hegemony and we invite everyone in good faith to join us on this trajectory.

Review: The Egoist Encyclopedia by Wolfi Landstreicher

anarchistnews.org
Jan 23, 2025

From The Creative Nothing
December 22, 2024

The Egoist Encyclopedia is a significant compilation of columns authored by Wolfi Landstreicher for Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed. Wolfi has established a notable reputation in the fields of Egoism and Anarchism through his extensive body of work, positioning himself as an important contemporary thinker. This book serves to clarify essential concepts related to the Anarcho-Egoist school of thought, while also addressing and dispelling common myths and misconceptions. Additionally, it explores the implications and potential actions associated with Egoist-Anarchism.

Consisting of 20 pages, the text is organized into nine chapters that examine various aspects of Egoist-Anarchism. It opens with an introduction in which the author outlines his motivations for creating this work. Subsequently, Wolfi delves into relevant topics that pertain to Anarcho-Egoist theory and practice. The chapter titles reflect discussions on Egoism, Anarchism, God, Realism, Writer’s Block, Society, and Boundaries. The work concludes with a manifesto underscoring the significance of the place of understanding the unique in relation to Anarcho-Egoist action.

The Egoist Encyclopedia is a brief yet impactful work that delivers a strong message. It is an essential resource for anyone seeking a foundational understanding of Anarchist Egoism. What makes the book stand out is in Wolfi’s clarity in writing, his lack of fear in addressing controversial topics, and is in its relatability to everyday experiences. One of the best examples of this is in the column of “Realism”.

Realism stands as a formidable ideology that asserts the current political and economic system is so deeply entrenched that any attempts to challenge it are simply futile unless they conform to acceptable forms of protest. Wolfi argues that realism permeates every authoritarian society, serving as a key instrument for those in power to shape social consensus. It diverts individuals from their challenging ideas, creative aspirations, and exhilarating dreams that could disrupt the stability of the ruling elite. While it may be unsurprising to see such ideologies embraced by those unwilling to disrupt the system, it is indeed alarming to witness this mentality among self-identified anarchists. Wolfi does not shy away from calling them out for their complicity. He points out:

“[…] to understand what might draw some anarchists to accept, even if only temporarily, this ruling ideology that is so contrary to any form of rebellion, it is necessary to recognize that far too many anarchists are soft-hearted, soft-headed humanitarians, animalist or even environmentalist. They tend to mistake charity for solidarity (something that I hope to deal with in future encyclopedia entries). In other words they are altruist. Their altruism is the key to how realism tames them” (p.14).

While this statement may be considered controversial and might sting many anarchists who read it, there appears to be some truth to the observation when we examine how many radicals address the issue of realism. We have all encountered realism through phrases like, “Why are you protesting? It’s not like you’re going to change anything!” or “Do anarchists truly believe that a stateless society can exist? Or that you can achieve that without the use of the state? That’s just not realistic.” These comments might be easy to dismiss. However, there is a more insidious form of defeatism evident in the “realism” described by Wolfi within radical circles.

For instance, during each U.S. presidential election, we often hear political catchphrases such as “lesser of two evils,” “this is the most important vote of our lifetime,” “we must stop fascism,” and “damage control.” These phrases, which reflect the “realist” attitudes described by Wolfi, infiltrate the discourse of individuals who identify as anarchists or as part of the left, leading them to justify their voting behavior or other otherwise submissive actions.

Wolfi discusses this situation in his book, stating:

“I have heard self-proclaimed anarchists use it to justify petitioning the government, writing letters to various authorities to influence their decisions, litigating, promoting legislation, voting, and so on. One anarchist I knew even attempted to justify Paul Watson’s collaboration with certain police forces in South America to combat marine poachers under the guise of an urgent need to protect endangered marine animals.” This sense of urgency, combined with altruism, leads these “realistic” anarchists to ultimately sacrifice themselves to the existing social order.” (p. 14)

Although Wolfi presents a rather bleak perspective in this column, he also offers valuable advice. He states:

“But, contrary to the claims of the ideologues of realism, there is another way to face reality; as it’s implacable enemy. I have my ideas, my dreams, my desires. They may not be realistic, but they are my own. To give them up would be to give myself up, and I'm not going to do that.” (p.14)

In just a few lines, Wolfi encapsulates the entire philosophy of Egoist-Anarchism in a motivating and poetic manner. Such evocative lines are scattered throughout the book, making it an enjoyable, inspiring, and informative read. I highly recommend this short work to both newcomers and those already familiar with the subject.

Farewell Jean-Jacques Cellier

anarchistnews.org
Jan 23, 2025

From International Center for Research on Anarchism (CIRA) & Éditions la Digitale
Info Sheet No. 260, November-December 2024

Jean-Jacques Cellier passed away on August 30, 2024 at the age of 78. For 40 years, he was a publisher, printer, typographer and bookbinder. In 1978, he founded Editions La Digitale in his Quimper workshop. Some fifty titles were published. All are printed the old-fashioned way: lead typography, on an old press. The catalog includes books on social struggles (Plogoff), anarchist texts (Erich Mühsam, Claire Auzias, Alexander Berkman, René Lochu, Claude Guillon, Abel Paz), poetry (Alain Jégou), literature (Jacques Josse).

Statement from his Éditions la Digitale:

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Jean-Jacques Cellier on the morning of Friday, August 30, 2024, suddenly taken from a pulmonary embolism at the age of 78.

Jean-Jacques Cellier founded Éditions la Digitale in 1978 in his workshop on rue de la Fontaine in Quimper, and worked alone for over 40 years as a publisher, printer, typographer and bookbinder.
He paid particular attention to the quality of the papers, inks and bindings of the works he published. He composed his texts in lead typography on a Linotype or a Ludlow and made the prints with a Nebiolo Saturnia press. He was one of the last to use this technique and these machines.

In 1979 he published the first reissue of the book Solutions sociales by Jean-Baptiste André Godin, a remarkable work of more than 500 pages that he composed on Linotype and whose notebooks he assembled with a simple sewing machine.

Jean-Jacques Cellier has chosen to publish testimonies, historical texts and political essays in line with his convictions. His fight over the years has been to maintain this demanding editorial line and share these ideas.

He will publish numerous works on the history of social struggles both in France and in the world, the anarchist movement told by those who lived it, works with evocative titles such as Combats pour la liberté , Une vie de révolte or Souvenirs d'anarchie , will republish texts by Auguste Brizeux, Anatole le Braz, Jean Epstein and Bernard Kellerman, including one soberly entitled La Mer , an extraordinary text that he loved very much.

In 1981, Femmes de Plogoff was published, which recounts the victorious struggle against the construction of a nuclear power plant at the Pointe du Raz. He actively participated in this fight. He then published works of literature and poetry by contemporary authors, including Alain Jégou, poet and fisherman, Jacques Josse, Yves Le Manach and Claude Pélieu.

In 2014, a final work was published, Sartre et le colonialisme by Hervé Oulc'hen, then Jean-Jacques Cellier retired from his job as a printer but continued to run Éditions la Digitale.

Thomas Hylland Eriksen has Died: A Rare Flower in Academia

anarchistnews.org
Jan 19, 2025

Thomas Hylland Eriksen has passed away
From Tobias Hübinette
November 29, 2024

So sad to read of the passing of the internationally known Norwegian anthropologist and anarchist Thomas Hylland Eriksen, who meant a lot to the research and discussion about ethnicity and nationalism that erupted after the end of the Cold War in the 90s and 00s and who always took up the fight against racism, right-wing extremism and right-wing populism.

I met Thomas on at least three occasions and the last time was in connection with a research internship in Drøbak in Norway together with about 15 other Nordic researchers (of which I was the only Swede) and I remember that Thomas, who had the same political background as myself, was fascinated by my research on adoptees and the "place" of the adoptees in relation to the theories of ethnicity, nationalism, diaspora and migration that Thomas was so knowledgeable about.

"Thomas Hylland Eriksen is dead, 62 years old. He was a professor of social anthropology, an author and an active community debater.”
-----------------------

Professor Thomas Hylland Eriksen has died: – A rare flower in academia
From NRK
November 27, 2024

Thomas Hylland Eriksen has died, aged 62. He was a professor of social anthropology, author and active public debater.

Thomas Hylland Eriksen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2016. He died tonight. His wife Kari J. Spjeldnæs confirmed this on Facebook.

" Our Thomas, my beloved husband and our kind dad left us peacefully and forever early this evening. We have long known that his unique and adventurous life could not last as long as we wished. Fortunately, we who were closest to him, Ole, Amanda, Kari and Ketil, have had a great time, good conversations and moments for eternity with Thomas in the last few days ."

– A rare flower

University Professor Thorgeir Kolshus, head of the Department of Social Anthropology at UiO, knew Hylland Eriksen well.

He describes his colleague as follows:

– A big international star, but also someone who first-year students could send emails to and get a response.

He says Hylland Eriksen was an anarchist by nature and skeptical of hierarchy.

– He lived it out so that good ideas were good ideas no matter where they came from. He had an enormous work capacity, even in the years when he was seriously ill he did much more than a hardworking employee would usually do.

Kolshus points out that Hylland Eriksen participated in debates, wrote books and chronicles.

– Eight years ago, he was diagnosed with a form of cancer that few survive more than a year. He has lived with a death sentence, and he has done what few manage to do, to let the doctor do his thing and continue living life.

– He was a rare flower.

Community-engaged family

Hylland Eriksen grew up in an intellectual and socially engaged family , which shaped him. He studied philosophy, sociology and social anthropology at the University of Oslo from 1981.

Eriksen was a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Peace Research (Prio) for a short period (1990–1991), before being appointed to the University of Oslo. He was an associate professor from 1991, and was appointed professor in 1995, at the age of 33.

He has been the author and co-author of over 50 books.

In 2019 he received Akademikerprisen.

– As a researcher, you sit alone a lot and are unsure whether anyone cares about what you are working on. Winning this prize means that others find what I do interesting and has value. It is a great encouragement and makes me want to keep going, said Hylland Eriksen at the time.

– Remarkable thinker

Labour Party politician Hadia Tajik describes Hylland Eriksen as a prominent thinker in the public debate for a number of years.

– For me personally, a lot of what he has written has been quite instructive for my own view of identity, of globalization, of nationalism.

She continues:

– And when I, as an adult, have had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, I have experienced him as a very genuine person and intellectually curious.

Author and MDG politician Eivind Trædal writes that Hylland Eriksen was a fantastic mediator and broad-minded thinker.

– What a loss for Norway! We don't have too many of those, and now we have one less. Thank you for everything (and it was certainly not little!).

Svein Stølen, rector of the University of Oslo, says Hylland Eriksen was a brilliant communicator who has inspired many.

– He took social anthropology out of academia and into people's lives. So he contributed to the whole of Norway understanding the society we are a part of better, he says.

Fearless and popular

Minister of Research and Higher Education Oddmund Hoel (Sp) says the death is sad news.

– Thomas Hylland Eriksen was a true intellectual, who has impressed, irritated and engaged. He has combined research at the absolute top level with communicating his subject to a wide audience.

Hoel says Hylland Eriksen was a clear public voice, who never shied away from a discussion and was never afraid to be countercultural.

– Nevertheless, he became a popular and well-known researcher. I think that for many Norwegians, Hylland Eriksen was the very archetype of a professor.

– On behalf of the government, I would like to thank Thomas Hylland Eriksen for a long and incredibly impressive career as a researcher, teacher and communicator. Today, our thoughts go to his closest family and friends, and to colleagues and students at the University of Oslo.

THE FIRST BOOK length study of the work of Poison Girls will be published this November by PM Press.

Written by the editor of this site Rich Cross, designed by Alex Dunn and edited by Erin Yanke, This is a Message to Persons Unknown: The Story of Poison Girls traces the history of the band “from their first gigs in Brighton, through their years of touring DIY venues across Britain and Europe, documenting their peerless collection of vinyl releases, the dissident campaigns the band supported, and the uncompromising political statements Poison Girls voiced on record, in print, and through their singular visual aesthetic.”

Flesh and blood are what we are, flesh and blood is who we are, our cover is blown.

This Is a Message to Persons Unknown is the first book to explore the history of the legendary band Poison Girls, from their first gigs in Brighton, through their years of touring DIY venues across Britain and Europe, documenting their peerless collection of vinyl releases, the dissident campaigns the band supported, and the uncompromising political statements Poison Girls voiced on record, in print, and through their singular visual aesthetic. A band every bit as formative to anarcho-punk as Crass were, Poison Girls offered a passionate, heartfelt rebuttal to punk rock’s Year Zero protestations. While their musical roots predated punk, their songs blended punk’s ferocity, with a sense of wit, creative ingenuity, and emotional tenderness. Formed in 1977, with a line-up that spanned the generations, Poison Girls were fronted by the redoubtable Vi Subversa, a lyricist, songwriter, and singular vocalist. Armed with a message of anarchist self-reliance, Poison Girls confronted the misogyny and ageism of countercultures and opposition movements just as fiercely as that of the capitalist war state. Through the dark decade of Thatcherism, Poison Girls’ path of most resistance took the band in a very different direction to that pursued by Crass, with some unexpected and revealing results.

Combining original interviews with surviving band members with a participants’ history drawn from the pages of contemporary zines and papers, this comprehensive history of Poison Girls is richly illustrated with photos, posters, record sleeves, and ephemera drawn from the personal archives of band members, including numerous evocative images of the band at work and at play. This Is a Message to Persons Unknown presents the full story of an unparalleled group of radical musicians and artists who saw in punk the opportunity not just to rage against the machine but to create something new and extraordinary.

The Responsibility of Criminals

A new short zine questioning how one acts under political persecution and certain risks of being a political criminal.

Obviously, you don't run around telling everyone you're under investigation, anyone who has been investigated, or in close relation with someone who has, knows this well. So how do we ensure we keep those around us safe while under this type of pursuit?

To start this:
Is this an inflammatory title? Kind of. Kind of not.
This is not a blanket statement, not by a long shot.

So in what context is this meant?

Firstly, Political criminals, specifically if they've been caught, specifically if they are anarchists.

Secondly, there will be no answers here. There will be questions posed and pondered, things suggested and condemned - but none of these are answers. This is to encourage thought on the issue and hopefully illuminate a needed conversation. I have opinions and surely my opinions will reflect here, figure out yours.

Finally, everything is hypothetical. Always.

So lets propose a hypothetical:
A person, a political criminal, let's call them elderberry, is under surveillance of a federal agency and actively under repression of the courts in trial. Aware of this, elderberry continuously involves themselves in political situations that require discretion. Some of their close affiliates are aware of this, but they regard themselves as an “organizer” as well as find themselves going to discrete anarchist gatherings. They engage in political activities, with varying risk levels, and often coexist in sensitive, political spaces, both with individuals that are aware of their surveillance status and with those who are not.

Is this okay?

Those who are aware of elderberry’s status are able to address that within their risk assessment when deciding to involve themselves. What about everyone else?

Let's say elderberry goes to a gathering, 4 days in the forest. At an anarchist gathering you can expect the surveillance of local law enforcement, but, suddenly, because of elderberry’s attendance, federal surveillance is now targeted at the gathering. Feds have authority, access, and equipment that is not available to local kops. Most others at the gathering will not have viewed being under the federal gaze as a likely possibility. Even with the increase of left-wing political repression in recent years, for most anarchist gatherings, federal agencies are barely, if at all, aware and do not care. Yet elderberry changed those odds.

Depending on the gathering, depending on the frontline, there’s a damn good chance of high-risk individuals being there: other political criminals who have evaded being investigated, migrants, “illegal” workers, people on the run, etc… . None who anticipated the feds watching them. Although they were not the subject of the investigation, due to the increased abilities of the agency surveilling elderberry, flags may be raised, or, they may plainly investigate everyone. Given the current RICO case against Weelaunee forest defenders, which is attempting to set precedent of left-leaning communities and, specifically, anarchist (or those who they choose to label as such), working together being labeled as “organized crime” and “racketeering”; this is plenty of incentive for said federal agency to take note on everyone at that gathering.

Elderberry arrived with 1 or 2 close comrades, there are 30ish people at the gathering depending on the day. Elderberry, attempted to be diligent (or maybe they didn't) to make sure their stuff wasn't bugged or tracked, but maybe they missed something. Turns out their phone is bugged, and although they don't have it on them while having sensitive conversations, it's on them enough during casual moments and a few things slip through. They also mostly turn off their phone when they are partaking in sensitive activities, some of which are group activities - a pattern that may or may not be noticed. Nobody but elderberry and the comrades they came with know that they are under federal surveillance.

Can anybody else there give informed consent to participating? Fooling local kops is a lot easier than fooling the feds. Evading local kops is a lot easier than evading the feds. You're playing a very different game when you are dealing with 3 letter agencies.

Obviously, elderberry can't go around telling everyone at the gathering that they are under surveillance or being investigated - that would leave them vulnerable. Obviously, people often tend to try keeping a low profile while under surveillance, but that is an individual risk one must make for themselves. When making that personal assessment should you actively be considering those around you? Is it ethical not to? Even outside of spaces with explicitly active political criminals, would it be ethical for elderberry to volunteer at a soup kitchen that has a lot of “illegal” migrants that go there?

This is a question of are others informed enough to make proper risk assessments to gauge their willingness, and therefore consent, and do we owe each other that? Is it fair to put others at that risk? Is it worth it? Could it be harmful?

Personally, i believe it is the feds’ job to try to find political criminals, and leading the feds to hotspots for their investigations is doing their job for them. We owe each other a lot, even if we are not in direct community. Not even necessarily for each other but for Liberation. When we are fighting alongside each other, even if on different fronts, it is in our best interest to protect each other.

Again, these are not answers, only opinions. And, although hypothetical, a very real concern, especially lately.

We need more political criminals, not more political prisoners. We keep us safe. Or at least we probably should.
TOLSTOY'S ANARCHISM

Interview with an anti-militarist from Odessa

From AnarCom Network
January 5, 2025

The following interview was carried out by comrades from the Československé anarchistické sdružení – CAS a Czech Internationalist Anarchist Group.

1)Please introduce yourself briefly to the readers of our magazine. Are you from Ukraine, where you were born and spent your youth?

Hi. My name is Vadym Yakovlev, I’m Ukrainian queer writer and journalist and I’m against the war and nationalism. I was born in Odesa, the largest southern multicultural city in Ukraine, a few months before the collapse of the USSR. My mother is Ukrainian and my father is Russian. Their fathers were military. My father worked in a factory. With the collapse of the USSR, the factory was closed, and my father lost his job. It affected my family and my childhood. I grew up in Odesa, but one year before I escaped Ukraine I was living in Lviv, the biggest city of the Western part of Ukraine. At home my relatives spoke Russian and Ukrainian, so I never focused on issues such as national identity. My family was an unhappy international family that lost a lot with the collapse of state communism in Ukraine. I guess all of that influenced me a lot in my search of my true political views and my desire to do something that can have influence on society.

2)You left Ukraine, what led you to this decision?

On the one hand, I could no longer work in Ukraine because of my political beliefs. The Ukrainian intelligentsia, journalists and artists as a community with the beginning of the war decided to become privileged elite propagandists in the service of the state. I didn’t want to be a propagandist, so I lost the opportunity to publish my articles. And if you publicly express in Ukraine the views I have, authorities can put you in the jail. On the other hand, of course due to my views, I didn’t want to go to war on the frontline. That’s why I escaped.

3)What is your attitude towards war and antimilitarism?

Much of my work in Ukraine was related to my anti-patriotic beliefs. My articles and participation in art projects were very often devoted to criticism of Ukrainian patriotism, Ukrainian nationalism and the mainstream privileged “pro-Western” and pro-war civil and cultural Ukrainian elite. I have always been interested in anti-war art and anti-war activism. Since 2022, I had to start doing this, even at the cost of losing the opportunity to stay and work in my native country and the loss of close friends who abandoned me because of my beliefs.

4)The war in Ukraine changed a lot of things. Are you in touch with your friends back home? What are their attitudes towards the war? How do they live

As I said in answer to the previous question, I lost most of my friends from the privileged art scene and the journalist-activist community. Almost all of them became propagandists, receiving support from the state and Western foundations. I also lost touch with the majority of the Ukrainian leftists, who are supporting militarism, nationalism and NATO. This type of leftists is supporting by the state and Western foundations too. But I’m still in touch with my friends, who are don’t work with the state and have nothing to do with privilaged classes. They support me and my anti-war views. A lot of them, if they are men, are living an awful life now, cause they have to hide all the time at their apartments in the fear of getting outside. Ukrainian army is kidnapping people from the street and sending them on the frontline without their permission. And majority of people with man gender marker in the documents are not allowed by the law to left the country.

5)Have many people, including anarchists joined the army and left antimilitarism? And not much is known about them? Maybe they are afraid. Do they exist? Are you in contact with them?

Regarding anti-war anarchists in Ukraine, we have anti-war collective called Assembly. They are from Kharkiv and have their own website where they are publishing anti-war and anti-conscription texts. This group of anarchists is anonymous and they hide the names of their team members. This is the only way to conduct any anti-war activity in Ukraine. There was only one Ukrainian organization that did not hide the names of its members and openly spoke out against the war – Ukrainian Pacifist Movement. The Security Service of Ukraine accused them of support of Russia and sent its leader to court. After that, the organization significantly softened its public position, fearing prison. Many Ukrainian leftists sided with the war, it seems to me, because of conformity. They are afraid to express their real position or simply don’t even have one, as it seems to me, and just are following mainstream trend. But these are just my assumptions. In Ukraine, as an authoritarian militaristic country, it is extremely unsafe to be against war.

6)What about Ukrainians in exile? Are they doing any anti-war activities? Are they organizing in workplaces?

Lately, many Ukrainian anti-war initiatives have appeared abroad. For example, Ukrainians are now organizing demonstrations against mobilization and human rights violations in Ukraine. These demonstrations are taking place in Germany, Italy, and France. Often, these actions are organized by Ukrainian leftists who have nothing to do with the pro-war Ukrainian left mainstream such as the so-called “Ukrainian anti-authoritarians” or Solidarity Collectives. All these groups of anti-war Ukrainian leftists are not financed by anyone, they are a personal initiative of convinced and active young people. There will be more of these actions, and I am in active communication with the organizers and members of this initiatives, this is very inspiring! In addition, in the West there are a certain number of Ukrainian scientists and artists who are against the war and who are constantly being marginalized and silenced here in the West. But we have all been silenced for too long, our voices have been erased for too long, and now we are increasingly trying to build horizontal connections at various levels, organizing an anti-war front here abroad against the war and the propagandists. There are many more of us than even we think.

7)The media is silent about the forced mobilization of the Ukrainian government. Rarely does information about deserters leak out? What can you tell us about it?

Nobody knows the exact number of deserters from the Ukrainian side, but according to official and unofficial statistics, there are about 150-200 thousand people! These are huge numbers. The official Ukrainian media are controlled by the state or the Security Service of Ukraine. Ukrainians mainly consume information from anonymous news channels on Telegram or TikTok. It is there that videos of violence against civilians by the Ukrainian army are constantly published. These videos, full of terrible scenes and evidence of human rights violations, do not make it into the official media. The Ukrainian authorities are constantly trying to find the authors of anonymous Telegram channels who criticize the actions of the Ukrainian army or advocate for peace, and put them in prison. Sometimes the authorities succeed. The Ukrainian government, police and the Security Service of Ukraine do not hesitate to use any methods to silence alternative voices. For example, the police recently arrested the mother of a blogger who is abroad and speaks out against forced mobilization, for publishing his post! There are also unofficial ways to shut up dissenters. I remember one teenager who had his own channel on Telegram, where he criticized Ukrainian nationalism and mobilization. He identified himself as an anarchist. Fascists came to his home for a “conversation”, after which he publicly renounced his beliefs. But the pro-war Ukrainian leftists, who are propagandists and accomplices of all these crimes against Ukrainians, will never tell you about such things.

8)Do you have acquaintances who have deserted or evaded the draft? How can we in Czechoslovakia help them?

I know people who have illegally fled the country, and I have many acquaintances and friends in Ukraine who are hiding from the army and conscription. Perhaps, over time, it will be necessary to create initiatives to help such people within the framework of anti-war Ukrainian movements abroad, which have only just begun to emerge. If such initiatives appear, I hope that there will be people in the Czech Republic and Slovakia who will want to help these Ukrainians.

9)What message would you give to Ukrainian and Russian workers at home and abroad?

The only thing I want to convey to those who are not part of the privileged classes (and this is not only the proletariat), regardless of their nationality and location: never trust those who build their happiness on your exploitation, marginalisation and systemic discrimination, and especially do not be fools and do not participate in their wars, it is simply stupid!

10)Thank you for the interview and if you have anything else to say, we would be happy to.

Thank you, comrade, for interviewing me.

Anarcho-Pacifism

Apparently Martin--whose sincerity I do not doubt--is not only an anti-militarist but an absolute pacifist. He does not only oppose the specific case of Ukrainians defending themselves against Russian state invasion, but would oppose any war of national liberation or any armed popular revolution against the state. This is an honorable anarchist opinion, but not the view of revolutionary anarchism.Reply

Thankyou Wayne for recognizing that pacifist anarchs are honorable and immersed in a deep empathic journey through life's challenges, rather than seething with ressentiment and venting their rage upon the Other.
