German pharmaceutical and agrochemical company Bayer on Friday said it plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new production site in the United States.

The new facility in New Albany in the US state of Ohio will combine the manufacture of pharmaceutical active ingredients and finished medicines on a single site and is set to create about 600 highly skilled jobs.

"Bayer has long seen the United States as a key manufacturing base and innovation hub," chief executive Bill Anderson said.

"The new site will be home to manufacturing expertise and a skilled workforce that will strengthen our ability to deliver innovative, high-quality medicines to patients both in the United States and abroad."

Bayer has invested more than $7 billion in pharmaceutical research and development as well as production in the US over the past five years.
