MedAxiom releases 2026 Cardiovascular Provider Compensation & Production Survey Report, revealing record compensation, rising productivity and growing workforce demands

National benchmarking report includes data from 205 cardiovascular programs and 6,476 physicians and advanced practice providers

American College of Cardiology

MedAxiom today announced the release of its 2026 Cardiovascular Provider Compensation & Production Survey Report, providing one of the most comprehensive cardiovascular-specific benchmarking resources available to healthcare leaders. Powered by MedAxcess, MedAxiom's proprietary cardiovascular business intelligence platform, the report includes data from 205 cardiovascular programs and 6,476 physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) nationwide.

As cardiovascular organizations face rising patient demand, workforce shortages and increasing financial pressures, the report delivers compensation and productivity benchmarks designed to help leaders evaluate provider performance, optimize staffing models, and make informed strategic decisions. Unlike broad healthcare compensation surveys, the report focuses exclusively on cardiovascular care and the unique operational challenges facing cardiovascular programs today.

"What we're seeing in this year's data is a clear picture of a cardiovascular workforce under increasing pressure to meet growing patient demand," said Jerry Blackwell, MD, MBA, FACC, president and CEO of MedAxiom. "Programs are responding through higher productivity, expanded APP utilization and evolving compensation models. These trends offer important insight into how leading organizations are adapting to today's challenges while preparing for future growth."

The report reveals continued growth in compensation and productivity across cardiovascular specialties, while highlighting the increasing role of APPs in helping programs meet expanding patient demand.

Key Findings From the 2026 Cardiovascular Provider Compensation & Production Survey Report

  • For the first time in report history, academic medical center compensation and production data are reported separately in the cardiology and APP sections.
  • Every cardiology subspecialty reported its highest median total compensation in the MedAxiom survey history, with overall median cardiology compensation increasing nearly 5% to $727,712.
  • Cardiology productivity also increased broadly, with all subspecialties reporting higher median work relative value unit (wRVU) production in 2025; advanced heart failure posted the largest year-over-year gain at nearly 11%.
  • Median new patient volumes and median patient panel reached record highs in 2025, with patient panel and total new patient visits each increasing 18% over the past five years. Median patient panel per cardiologist is now over 2,000 patients.
  • In response to growing demand and physician scarcity, programs utilized additional APP support. Cardiology APP productivity reached a new benchmark, exceeding 2,000 median annual wRVUs for the first time and increasing approximately 30% since 2021.
  • Cardiac surgery had a standout year, with median total compensation exceeding $1 million – the first time any cardiovascular specialty reached this threshold in the history of the report.
  • Advanced imaging continues to expand rapidly, with median advanced imaging volumes per patient panel increasing 36% from 2024 to 2025 and the ratio of advanced imaging studies to cardiac catheterizations exceeding 50%.
  • Electrophysiology volumes are accelerating, with median ablations per EP physician increasing more than 140% over five years.

These findings point to a cardiovascular industry adapting to sustained growth in patient demand through increasing productivity, expanding APP utilization, and evolving compensation strategies.
