The Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) election victory has cleared the way for a new government to take office on February 17, 2026, marking a significant political shift in Dhaka and prompting renewed regional engagement.

The transition follows a closely watched vote that reshapes Bangladesh’s domestic landscape and its external partnerships. More than 12 heads of government from countries across Asia have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony, according to a report by The Daily Star, citing officials associated with Bangladesh’s interim administration and the BNP.

According to the report, invitations have been extended to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as well as to China and other capitals.

Humayun Kabir, a senior BNP figure overseeing international outreach, as interviewed by WION, indicated that the incoming administration intends to strengthen bilateral ties with India and other countries based on mutual interest and respect.

Recent diplomatic gestures between New Delhi and BNP leaders were characterised as constructive signals for improving relations. However, Modi is unlikely to attend in person due to prior commitments as the oath taking ceremony in Bangladesh coincides with a highly anticipated India-France bilateral summit, which will include bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and an artificial intelligence summit.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not formally confirmed attendance, though alternative high-level representation remains under consideration.

While relations with Bangladesh are a top priority for India and Modi’s administration, the summit with France is a highly anticipated culmination point where major defence deals including a large order for 114 Rafale jets is likely to be announced.

Investors and policymakers will assess the composition of foreign delegations and early policy signals from Dhaka for indications on trade continuity, connectivity initiatives and cross-border investment flows in a strategically important South Asian market.
