The do-gooder dilemma: to disclose or not to disclose

ITHACA, N.Y. — Jerry Richardson, a doctoral candidate in psychology, was dashing into a grocery store on his way to a dinner party when a man outside the store asked him for some food. Richardson obliged, and gave him $7 of groceries. The recipient was so grateful, and Richardson felt so good about his gift, he thought he’d tell his dinner partners about the experience.

But an icky feeling soon took over. Richardson decided not to tell his friends. And then he refrained from posting about his good deed on social media.

The experience prompted Richardson and his colleagues to investigate how people perceive the emotional cost of reporting one’s own good deeds – and how they think others will feel if they do too.

Richardson is the lead author of the paper, “The Do-gooder Dilemma,” published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology’s November issue. His co-authors are Paul Bloom of the University of Toronto; and Shaun Nichols, Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences in Philosophy, and David Pizarro, professor of psychology, both in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Across five studies, the researchers demonstrated that people believe that they would feel worse telling others about their good deeds, such as giving to those in need, than if they kept the news to themselves, or told others about their personal achievements, like getting a job promotion. 

“It was a bit of a surprise, to know that people actually are pretty intuitive about themselves – that they think they will feel bad afterward,” Pizarro said.

In the studies, the researchers asked several hundred people to recall a good deed and a personal achievement they’d performed in the past, and how happy, proud, ashamed and embarrassed they feel about both of those acts.

Then the study participants were asked to imagine how they’d feel if they told a friend about these acts, and how they’d feel if they posted about them on social media.

The participants said they’d feel more ashamed and embarrassed telling friends about their good deed and posting about it on social media. But they’d feel more proud and happy about sharing a personal achievement.

“Our suspicion is that people are just aware of the fact that, if they talk about these good deeds that they’ve committed, people might think that they were motivated by the social credit, the reputational boost, that they would get,” Richardson said.

This explanation is consistent with the more extreme emotional penalty predicted when posting a good deed on social media compared to telling a friend, the team wrote in the paper. “This could result in a dose of embarrassment and/or shame that washes away the warm glow of the altruistic act because actors are aware of the reputational cost that may ensue,” they wrote.

The researchers also found a surprising outcome: The study participants believed that while they would feel bad when sharing their good deeds, others would feel a lot better than the study participants would. 

That could be because it’s hard to really imagine other people’s experiences, Richardson said.

“We think that’s because we just don’t have access to the inner states of others in that way,” he said. “Our simulations of their minds tend to be a bit shallower than our own.”

An additional takeaway from the work is that sharing stories of one’s own good deeds may be an unwise way to show others our moral character, Richardson said, and telling everyone about our good deeds might make us feel worse.

“Oscar Wilde might be right. He said the nicest feeling in the world is to do a good deed anonymously – and have somebody find out.”

Could psychotherapy work by changing how we navigate our own minds?

The stereotypical image of psychotherapy shows a patient lying on a couch, exploring their deepest traumas. This leads to awareness of unconscious habits, thoughts, and drives and has long been a cornerstone of psychotherapy. However, the cognitive processes underlying the new awareness that emerges—what’s actually happening in the patient’s brain on that couch—remain a mystery. 

“Part of the problem with psychotherapy is that we haven’t had good insights into the mechanistic problems,” said Jaan Aru, an associate professor at the University of Tartu, in an interview with the Observer. “So, it’s very hard to design a therapy.” 

In a 2025 paper in Perspectives on Psychological Science, Aru and Nick Kabrel, Aru’s graduate student at the University of Zurich, wrote that becoming aware of unrecognized psychological and behavioral challenges is the most crucial mechanism in conversation-based psychotherapy. Furthermore, they argue that becoming aware can be best framed as a process that expands one’s cognitive map and changes the way one navigates through the mind. This framework also provides a testable theory about the neural correlates behind successful psychotherapy.  

Kabrel came to this theory through personal experience. He noticed how a therapist’s questions could prompt him to search through his memories and beliefs, and the introspection was surprisingly powerful. He wondered what was happening in his brain in those moments and noticed something that sparked his interest. 

“When I search through memory or search in my mind, it always feels as if I am navigating in some kind of environment,” he said.  

As he looked into this idea of mental navigation, he realized he was not alone. In a 2024 paper, he and Aru showed that patients and therapists used more spatial language—such as “this is unexplored territory” or “I’m going in circles”—during psychotherapy sessions than during everyday conversation. 

In the new paper, Aru and Kabrel proposed a framework based on how individuals construct their internal worlds in the form of cognitive maps: structured representations of phenomena like objects, concepts, people, and memories, and the relationships among them. Research revealing how the brain represents three-dimensional space helped inspire how this navigation may occur in the brain (O’Keefe and Dostrovsky, 1971; Hafting, 2005). In the hippocampus, place cells fire when animals are in a specific location, while the entorhinal cortex’s grid cells act like a coordinate map. More recent research revealed these cells also encode abstract concepts, such as time, sound, social hierarchies, and word meanings (MacDonald, 2011; Aronov, 2017; Park, 2021; Solomon, 2019; Viganò, 2021). 

“The brain is highly likely to make use of this mapping system in these other domains, too,” Aru said. “This idea of mental navigation could be a very general framework to understand thinking and abstract cognition.” 

Framing introspection in this way may help people realize that changing the way they navigate through their thoughts could help them out of a pathological way of thinking.  

For example, someone suffering from depression might think they are flawed, and any interaction with someone else that ends negatively will be interpreted as their fault because of these perceived flaws. As they continue to view the world through this same negative lens, this thought pattern gets reinforced. It’s analogous to hiking through a forest: The more a path is used, the wider it gets and the more likely it is to be used again.  

But a therapist helping them see a different interpretation—a different navigational route—may allow them to reframe their thoughts and not see everything as their fault. Kabrel recommends a psychotherapist say something like, “This is the place where we are stuck. We come back here every time, but we need to expand this.” 

Aru thinks this idea is not just for people with mental illness, but for everyone.  

“Often the problem is that people have very narrow maps, very narrow ways of thinking. And it’s a very general problem,” he said. “Our goal as a society could be to expand the way people actually think.” 

On a smaller scale, the goal of the paper is to encourage psychological scientists and neuroscientists to design experiments to test this new framework and the possible neural correlates involved. In the meantime, Aru knows that some scientists may be doubtful. 

“It’s completely understandable if there are scientists who would say, ‘Oh, you’re stretching it too far. How do you know that it’s really related to grid cells?’” he explained. “For me, this is the fun thing about science. You can try to make these links, and sometimes these links are actually there. Then suddenly we might be understanding something that we previously didn’t, and we might be expanding our own mental maps with that.”

Gerrymandering in North Carolina limited residents’ access to healthcare centers

A University of Massachusetts Amherst study has found that gerrymandering in North Carolina resulted in reduced access to healthcare services. As states across the country grapple with politically charged redistricting efforts, the finding could ultimately offer a new strategy to fight gerrymandering in the courts, the researchers say.

“Access to healthcare should not be dependent on which party is in power,” says Auden Cote-L’Heureux, lead author of the paper published Nov. 13 in the American Journal of Public Health, which also issued an editorial piece on the research. “Healthcare should be protected from political whims.” 

Cote-L’Heureux, a recent UMass Amherst graduate now studying for a master’s degree at the University of Bonn in Germany, carried out the research with senior author David Chin, assistant professor of health policy and management in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences

They analyzed electoral, demographic and health center data to examine how gerrymandering may affect access to a federally qualified health center (FQHC), which provides primary and preventive healthcare services regardless of the ability to pay.

Redistricting is the constitutionally mandated practice of redrawing electoral districts as populations shift to ensure equal representation in the federal House of Representatives and state legislative bodies. Gerrymandering, on the other hand, is the redrawing of electoral districts to benefit a political party or candidate; the current Supreme Court has made gerrymandering difficult to litigate successfully, except in particular cases where it violates the Voting Rights Act.

“This is perhaps not the first, but I think the most rigorous assessment of this simple question – does this representation [created by gerrymandering] translate into either good or harm?” says Chin. “You can use publicly available data to infer political determinants of health.”

The researchers examined ZIP codes as a proxy for communities. A ZIP code split between two or more legislative districts was considered highly gerrymandered, whereas a ZIP code that lies entirely or mostly within a single district is generally less gerrymandered. The researchers also used recently developed techniques that allowed them to determine the degree to which each individual voter is artificially “dislocated” from like-minded voters, another way of measuring gerrymandering.

“We find that ZIP codes that were more gerrymandered between 2004 and 2022 had fewer federally qualified health centers in 2022 and were less likely to gain health centers between 2004 and 2022,” Cote-L’Heureux says. “In addition, those communities had fewer patients visiting those health centers in 2022.”

The researchers noted that residents in communities split evenly between two state senate districts during the 18-year period had to travel about 30% farther to their nearest FQHC in 2022 than individuals in communities lying entirely within a single district. Greater gerrymandering severity of state senate districts was linked with up to a 29% reduction in the number of FQHCs. 

“These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that gerrymandering weakens local political representation and can lead to reduced access to vital healthcare services — a structural issue with far-reaching implications for health equity and national policy reform,” the researchers wrote. 

Cote-L’Heureux notes that the Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that partisan gerrymandering —  gerrymandering to favor a party — cannot be contested in the federal courts because it constitutes a “non-justiciable political question.” 

Chin and Cote-L’Heureux say their findings could offer a potentially legally sound way to contest gerrymandering. “There hasn’t been a compelling argument in our current Supreme Court’s opinion as to how to measure gerrymandering’s harm, and our research provides a way of measuring its harm,” Cote-L’Heureux says.

Chin agrees. “This is a pretty clear illustration of the relationship between political representation as it translates to individuals receiving healthcare at FQHCs,” Chin says. “We have laid the groundwork, the empirical pieces, for people who are interested in this.”
