The European Investment Bank agreed more than PLN1.12bn (€260mn) in financing for Tauron’s 190MW Miejska Górka wind farm in western Poland, which is set to become the country’s second-largest onshore facility, the EU lender said on July 29.
Construction is advanced and Tauron plans to commission the project in 2027. More than 50 turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6MW and a height exceeding 130 metres, will generate enough electricity to supply nearly 200,000 households.
The EIB loan will cover more than half of the project’s total cost and has an 18-year maturity. Miejska Górka will be Tauron’s largest onshore wind farm and forms part of the utility’s plan to reach climate neutrality by 2040.
“Favourable parameters, including attractive interest rates and an 18-year-long tenure, are particularly important to us,” Tauron deputy chief executive for finance Krzysztof Surma said in a statement.
The agreement is the ninth financing deal between the EIB and Tauron and the second-largest loan signed by the two institutions, after a PLN2.8bn agreement in 2021. Earlier financing covered projects including power grids and hybrid bonds.
Tauron, Poland’s second-largest energy group, serves 6mn customers and operates across around 18% of the country’s territory. Its renewable portfolio has reached 1,000MW of installed capacity, including 16 onshore wind farms and six solar plants.
The project will use mainly European subcontractors and is expected to support employment and regional development while increasing renewable generation in Poland’s electricity mix, the EIB said.
