Conservatives who are attacking Justin Trudeau for admitting that the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Commission was correct to accuse Canada of genocide in its treatment of Indigenous women are pretending that this is the first time that a Canadian prime minister made such an admission.
That's false. Paul Martin was first. He was no longer prime minister at the time that he spoke out on the matter. But the fact remains that he had served as our prime minister and after assessing the evidence before the Truth and Reconciliaton Commission, concluded that the intention of the residential school system was "cultural genocide."
