Who is more likely to get long COVID?

New study uncovers the genetic drivers behind the disease

University of South Australia

Australian scientists have identified the key genetic drivers behind long COVID, revealing why some people continue to experience debilitating symptoms long after their initial infection.

The breakthrough, made using large scale biological datasets, could pave the way for targeted treatments and personalised diagnostics.

The team, led by University of South Australia scientists, integrated genetic and molecular data from more than 100 different international studies, identifying 32 causal genes that increase the likelihood of a person developing long COVID, including 13 new genes not previous associated with the disease.

Their findings have been reported in two new scientific papers published in PLOS Computational Biology and Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

An estimated 400 million people have been affected by long COVID since 2020, imposing a $1 trillion annual cost to the global economy.

Characterised by symptoms like prolonged fatigue, breathlessness, cardiovascular complications and cognitive impairment beyond four weeks, the condition has proved stubbornly difficult to diagnose and treat. Many people have experienced symptoms for weeks, months, and sometimes years after contracting the virus.

Lead author UniSA PhD candidate in Bioinformatics, Sindy Pinero, says large-scale datasets and advanced computational methods can more quickly identify the causes, risk factors, and potential treatment options for long COVID.

The methods combine advanced bioinformatics and artificial intelligence to interpret massive biological datasets known as “omics” data – encompassing genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and epigenomics.

“These findings mark a major step towards a more precise way of diagnosing and treating the condition,” Pinero says.

“Long COVID is incredibly complex. It affects multiple organs, shows highly variable symptoms, and has no single final diagnostic marker.

“However, by using computational models to integrate data from across the world, we can begin to uncover consistent molecular signatures of disease and identify biomarkers that point to new treatment targets.”

The review identifies dozens of genetic, epigenetic, and protein-level biomarkers linked to immune dysfunction, persistent inflammation, and mitochondrial and metabolic abnormalities.

Among the key discoveries is a genetic variant in the FOX P4 gene, associated with immune regulation and lung function, that appears to increase people’s susceptibility to long COVID.

Researchers also found 71 molecular switches that can turn genes on or off, persisting a year after infection, and more than 1500 altered gene expression profiles tied to immune and neurological disruption.

By integrating these findings using machine learning, the study demonstrates how different layers of biological data can be combined to predict which patients are at risk of long-term complications and how their symptoms may evolve.

“This computational framework not only improves our understanding of long COVID but could also accelerate the search for treatments for other post-viral symptoms such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia,” according to Assoc Prof Le.

Co-author, UniSA Associate Professor Thuc Le, says that computational science is essential to solving the long COVID puzzle.

“Traditional biomedical research can’t keep pace with the complexity of this condition,” Assoc Prof Le says.

“By applying artificial intelligence to global datasets, we can identify causal relationships that are invisible in small clinical trials – for example, how specific genes interact with immune pathways to drive persistent inflammation.”

The review also highlights the urgent need for larger, more diverse international datasets and longitudinal studies that follow patients for several years after infection.

“Many existing studies are small and inconsistent, which makes it hard to identify reliable biomarkers.

Global collaboration and data sharing are the key to producing results that can translate into clinical tools.

“This research is not only about long COVID. It represents a blueprint for how global science can use big data, AI and molecular biology to respond to future pandemics and complex chronic diseases.”

Community swimming program for Black youth boosts skills, sense of belonging, study finds

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago

Black youth in the United States disproportionately experience fatal drowning at rates up to five times higher than their White peers. These statistics relate to historical and structural barriers Black youth face in learning to swim. In efforts to overcome these inequities, an innovative summer swimming program in Evanston, IL, was offered to Black kids entering third through fifth grades. After the three-week program, participants demonstrated significant improvement in objective and parental-reported swim skills, according to an evaluation study published in the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education.

“Swimming is more than a sport. It is a life skill and a safety skill that every person deserves to learn,” said senior author Michelle Macy, MD, MS, Scientific Director, Community, Population Health, and Outcomes, Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and Professor of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

“This local program showed acquisition of swim skills in an environment that fostered inclusion and empowerment for Black youth, a group that suffers some of the highest rates of fatal drowning nationally,” she added. “By focusing on 8-to-10-year-olds, the program filled a critical gap for these kids who didn’t have opportunities to learn to swim at younger ages.”

This study was conducted in partnership with Kuumba Evanston, a community-based organization whose mission is to serve families of color that have been marginalized by systemic racism.

The swimming program consisted of eight 60-minute sessions over three weeks. The study evaluated outcomes over two summers. A total of 64 youth participated – 38 completed all three weeks in 2023 and 36 completed all three weeks in 2024.

Instructors and parents shared common views of the program, citing the greatest success stemming from the sense of belonging in the swimming world, which was created by being surrounded by other Black youth who were also building confidence in the water and gaining swimming skills.

“Building trust and confidence with each swimmer and family was crucial,” said Andy Miner, Swimming Program Director and co-author on the study. “Once we created an environment where the kids knew they belonged and felt themselves growing and learning in the water, the results began to compound. The culture shifted from surviving in the water to thriving.”

Another indicator of success for this program was the high retention rate with 10 children returning for a second summer and only one participant dropping out of the program.

“Potential reasons for the high retention rate include supportive instructors and offering instruction in a group setting where all participants were members of the same racial group, a group that has historically been excluded from swimming spaces,” said Dr. Macy.

The study team has shared findings with the Water Safety Task Force of Metro Chicago, which includes Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools, Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, DuPage County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. These results will also be used in the development of the Water Safety Plan for the State of Illinois.

“These groups and other communities can integrate our observations into new approaches to advance equity, increase a sense of belonging in aquatic spaces, and improve access to swim instruction in communities of color,” said Dr. Macy.

Dr. Macy holds the Mary Ann and J. Milburn Smith Research Professorship for the Director of Child Health Research at Lurie Children’s.

The study was funded through a grant from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is a nonprofit organization committed to providing access to exceptional care for every child. A scandal-plagued pro-Trump lawmaker was at a political event in New York City over the weekend that was also attended by a number of prominent white nationalists and Nazi sympathizers, according to Politico.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) was given a prime speaking role at the New York Young Republican Club gala, held on Saturday.

"Inside Cipriani Wall Street, amid the sea of tuxedos and ball gowns, was white nationalist leader Jared Taylor. Across the room sat EmpathChan, an influencer who went viral recently for wearing blackface on Halloween. And appearing on stage was Markus Frohnmaier, a far-right German politician, whose political party the club had cheered with a German-language phrase popularized by the Nazis," reported Jason Beeferman and Caroline McCarthy. "Also spotted at the New York Young Republican Club gala: Vish Burra, a club member who lost his job at the conservative One America News Network last month for posting a video depicting Jews as cockroaches."

Ogles himself pushed extreme anti-immigrant fervor when it was time for him to speak, reiterating his call to deport New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

“If dubiously elected or rather naturalized illegal immigrants are polluting our politics, the new right must have courage to deport them,” Ogles said.

The New York Young Republican Club was sent reeling by scandal earlier this year after an explosive report showing a trove of racist, misogynistic, and hate-filled text communications by members of the group. Some people in the chats praised Hitler, called Black Americans "watermelon people," and fantasized about raping political opponents.

The reporting triggered the resignation of a number of GOP staffers, as well as one state senator in Vermont, who were involved with the chats.

Ogles, who represents a heavily gerrymandered district including portions of Nashville, has frequently been mired in his own controversies, including financial discrepancies with his campaign and an allegation that he pocketed $25,000 in crowdfunding to build a memorial for his stillborn son. He also drew outrage for suggesting the right way to handle Palestinians in Gaza would be to "kill 'em all."

‘A Monstrosity’: Trump Blames Killing of Rob Reiner and Wife on Director’s Anti-Trump Views

One critic called Trump’s social media post following the murders “the most disturbing, deranged, and demented post you’ll ever see from a US president.”

Fucking grotesque.” “A monstrosity.” “A real post by the president of the United States, who has the nuclear codes.” “DESPICABLE.”

This is but a sampling of the reaction to President Donald Trump’s Monday morning response to the apparent double murder of iconic film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner—who were among Hollywood’s most vocal critics of the president and the threat he posed to US democracy.

Calls Grow to Release Transcript of ‘Highly Disturbing’ Trump-MBS Call After Khashoggi Murder

Trump took to his Truth Social network to make the deaths about himself:
A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!

“Nobody celebrates the murder of perceived enemies quite like Trump—whose celebration of the murder of Rob Reiner is the most disturbing, deranged, and demented post you’ll ever see from a US president,” singer-songwriter and activist Bill Madden said on social media.

Even Trump’s supporters could not believe the president actually posted the message, with some seeking confirmation from Grok, the generative artificial intelligence chatbot on Elon Musk’s social media site X, that the post was “fake.” Grok obliged, replying falsely that “the statement attributed to Trump is not real” and “appears fabricated.”

Invoking the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk—the far-right firebrand known for purveying racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and misogynistic rhetoric from behind a shield of “free speech”—Democratic strategist Max Burns said, “I don’t want to hear another sanctimonious word from the Republicans who accused Democrats of not showing enough sadness when Charlie Kirk died.”

“Trump is dancing on Reiner’s body and blaming Reiner for his own murder—but remember, they demanded people be FIRED for not dropping down in tears to praise Charlie Kirk after his death,” Burns added. “It’s all an act. These people only have compassion for their own.”

Some also pointed out that in contrast to Trump’s comments, after Kirk’s killing, Reiner called the assassination an “absolute horror” and condemned political violence.

'Badly broken' Trump triggers swift outrage with double-down on Rob Reiner attack

President Donald Trump sent the internet into a frenzy on Monday afternoon after he doubled down on his comments about slain director Rob Reiner from earlier in the day.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday morning that Reiner suffered from "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and said the director died "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction." The comments sparked bipartisan outrage.

Reiner and his wife, Michelle, were found dead in their Hollywood home on Saturday night. Authorities have identified the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, as the primary suspect in the case after he and Rob had an argument at a holiday party hosted by talk show host Conan O'Brien, according to CNN.

Trump doubled down on those comments when CNN's Kristen Holmes asked Trump about the criticism he received from Republicans during a press conference on Monday afternoon.

"I wasn't a fan of his at all," Trump said. "He was a deranged person."

Political analysts and observers condemned Trump's comments on social media.

"FFS," conservative columnist Charlie Sykes posted on X.

"I know his staff is beyond shame, but each and every one of them should feel utterly embarrassed to work for a human this badly broken," political speechwriter Zev Karlin Neumann posted on X.

"Just disgusting," writer Olivia Juliana posted on X.

"What are the deletists going to say now?" entertainment entrepreneur Ian Schaefer posted on X.

"Hey, Erika Kirk! Are you going to tell F---face over here to tone down the hateful rhetoric?" writer Polly Singh asked on X.

"This is why we all can’t wait for the day," Democratic digital strategist Ally Sammarco posted on X.

Trump induces nausea with 'ghoulish' rant against Rob Reiner: 'Fundamentally evil'

President Donald Trump suggested Rob Reiner had it coming after the Hollywood legend was found dead with his wife in their home — and onlookers were sickened.

Los Angeles police are investigating the deaths of the 78-year-old Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, as an apparent homicide, but the president lashed out the "Princess Bride" and "A Few Good Men" director — and suggested that the star's vocal criticism could be linked to his killing.

"A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood," Trump posted Monday morning. "Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS."

"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before," Trump added. "May Rob and Michele rest in peace!"

Other social users were appalled by the post and seemed to agree that it might be the president's worst ever.

"This is one of the most psychotic things Trump has ever posted," declared journalist Aaron Rupar.

"Christ. Trump says Rob Reiner and his wife were murdered 'due to the anger he caused others' through his 'TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME,'" posted Vanity Fair's Aidan McLaughlin.

"Because you know it's ALWAYS about Trump," said architect and blogger Gerald Weinand.

"Holy ..., Trump is saying Rob Reiner had it coming," gasped Bluesky user Brosemite Sam.

"If you read this properly, he’s saying that Reiner was killed bc he made a Trump supporter too angry, and this is a good thing," added Bluesky user No True Bill. "(Note this is not what happened in objective reality)."

"So Trump’s saying his supporters are going around killing his critics now?" agreed Bluesky user Molotov Cats.

"Utterly incapable of grace," sighed journalist Philip Bump.

"Trump is just a fundamentally evil person," stated Gizmodo's Matt Novak.

"The ghoulish, disgusting, unhinged, horrible Donald Trump makes the tragic murder of Rob Reiner about himself. Anyone surprised?" posted Mike Sington, a senior executive at NBC Universal.

"How this vile, disgusting, and immoral behavior has become normalized in the United States is something our descendants will study in school, to the shame of our generation," wrote author and podcast host Russell Moore.

"Reiner’s body isn’t cold yet but here’s the American president pissing on it," seethed political analyst John Stoeher. "Trump has brought misery and hardship to millions but no matter how bad it is, it won’t ever match the joy and laughter that Rob Reiner brought to the world. Americans will be quoting The Princess Bride etc long after they have forgotten Trump."

"Here's Trump saying Rob Reiner is dead because he made people mad with his 'Trump Derangement Syndrome,'" posted journalist Mark Jacob. "Absolutely insane. It's a real post by the president of the United States, who has the nuclear codes."

"I had to check this was real, because when I saw it originally it looked so disgusting that I thought no-one would actually go that low, even Trump," said Daniel Sugarman, deputy editor of Jewish News. "But no, it's real, of course. Sickening."

"My God. F--- this despicable waste of space," added Bluesky user Rachel Sexton. "I will never forgive the people who voted for him. What an inhuman monster. Live your life so you can be remembered like Rob Reiner. He is being sincerely mourned and Trump never will be."

Piers Morgan leads charge as massive right-wing backlash hits Trump over Rob Reiner

A number of influential right-wing figures are outraged after President Donald Trump issued a “disgusting” attack on Hollywood icon Rob Reiner just hours after the discovery of the director's and his wife’s deaths, which law enforcement is investigating as a homicide.

“Disgusting statement,” wrote Robby Soave, a conservative libertarian journalist with The Hill who’s previously lavished praise on Trump and advocated for him to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in a social media post on X.

Both Reiner and his wife were found dead Sunday in their California home with apparent stab wounds. Their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was arrested Monday and held on a $4 million bail. He has reportedly been charge with murder.

For Trump, however, news of Reiner’s death was an opportunity to attack the filmmaker – long a vocal critic of the president. In a Truth Social post, he suggested that Reiner’s death was caused by “the anger he caused” over his “mind crippling disease known as Trump derangement syndrome.”

The blowback from Trump’s attack was so immense that even some of his most diehard supporters came out against him.

“What happened last night to Rob Reiner and his wife was a savage butchering of 2 human lives,” wrote right-wing influencer Robby Starbuck, who’s amassed more than 850,000 followers on X and has become an influential figure in the MAGA movement.

“I don’t care what their politics were or how they felt about Trump, no law abiding human deserves this. We should pray for + send condolences to his loved ones and NOT make it political.”

British journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan, who’s also lavished praise on Trump in the past, outright called for the president to “delete” his social media post.

“This is a dreadful thing to say about a man who just got murdered by his troubled son,” Morgan wrote in a social media post on X, though the son has not been found guilty of the crime. “Delete it, Mr President.”

Even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who had been arguably Trump’s most-loyal ally in Congress for years before their public spat last month, responded to Trump’s attack with disdain.

“Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak,” Greene wrote in a social media post on X.

“This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, those not associated with the MAGA movement or Trump were more blunt with their condemnations.

“This is a sick man,” wrote California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

And actor, singer and comedian Josh Gad, in a social media post on Threads, took Trump’s attack to heart and delivered a brutal check on the president’s moral character.

“There is no low that is too low for this psychopath,” Gad wrote. “Rob Reiner was 1000 times the man you are and unlike you, he actually cared about the American people. Go paint your hand on your gold toilet and destroy things like the White House. That’s what you do best.”

Trump's own fans left repulsed by 'heartless' Rob Reiner comments: 'Please stop!'

Donald Trump’s Monday morning post on Truth Social about the shocking death of Hollywood star Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer started out calling it, “A very sad thing.”

But it quickly took an ugly turn in an attack that left onlookers sickened — including many of the president's own fans.

Just hours after the two were found in their Brentwood, California home, the president wrote, “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood.

"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

That did not sit well with some of the president’s fans who urged him to delete the post, with one calling the president “heartless.”

Charlie Kirk supporter Ant fired back, “Didn’t agree with Rob’s views or what he said but no one deserves to go out like that”

“Very tacky Mr. President,” wrote Lighthouser, whose Truth Social account is littered with attacks on Muslim immigrants.

“Terrible post and I am a big Trump supporter. Take it down!!” commented @Laurengerbino.

Gracelover wrote, “I respect you so much, but this was heartless and uncalled for,” which led Medgirl to add, “You could have just said RIP. Love you Mr. President, but none of the other stuff was needed. It’s very sad that we are living in the world we live in right now.

MAGAHarleyChick offered, “Please stop President Trump. You’re my president and I will vote for you always but this is not a good idea or a very smart comment. I don’t know who’s advising you but they are not very smart.”

Mike D who had previously reposted Trump writing, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” snapped, “This is absolutely insane to write.”

“There are no words for this post, no good words anyway,” offered Iworkforangels.

WMMark suggested, “Dear President Trump. Sometimes saying nothing is better. Don't let your ego get the best of you. You are just giving the enemy more ammunition and you will alienate fringe supporters. Come on, you are smarter than this.”

Economic Self-Interest Will Draw Millions To Solar Energy

A good investment never did so much good. Eventually, more and more people will realize it.

Many Americans who don’t believe in global warming will opt to invest in solar energy simply because it will save them lots of money.

Unfortunately, not everyone can install solar panels on their roofs. People in apartments or renting will not have that opportunity, though some might cash in through community solar organizations or plug-in solar --- portable panels that can be placed on balconies or in yards.

‘Victory for Everyone Who Pays an Electricity Bill’: Judge Tosses Trump Ban on New Wind Energy Projects

Even some single-family homes may have roofs aimed the wrong direction or too shaded. But for those with suitable houses, solar panels are increasingly a no-brainer.

In 2019 we installed 32 panels on our home roof at a cost of about $18,000--- about $22,000 in 2025 dollars. However a 30% federal tax credit reduced our out of pocket cost to about $12,600.

Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” repeals the federal tax credit starting in January, but solar panels remain an excellent investment.

In seven years, our panels have generated more than 72,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity. This would have cost us more than $7,250 at the local price of ten cents per kilowatt-hour. Thus, in less than seven years our panels have saved us more than half of what we paid for them. And they should be good for 25 years, or more.

They have generated more than half of the electricity we have used in our all-electric household, including charging up the battery in our electric car, a Chevrolet Bolt EV. To indicate how much energy 72,500 kilowatt-hours represents, that would be enough to drive our electric car about 280,000 miles!

The cost of installing solar panels may come down further. The panels themselves are getting cheaper. And for various reasons, including local building regulations, installation costs in the U.S. are much higher than in some other countries. Many cities are exploring how to make local laws more receptive to solar.

Maximum benefit from solar panels will come if you pay cash for them rather than borrowing the money and paying interest on it. Assuming you have money that you might otherwise invest in a CD, bonds, or stocks, just compare what such investments would earn compared to what the solar panels would save you.

Assuming panels would cost you $20,000, investing that amount instead in a 3% CD would bring in $600 a year in taxable income, so maybe you would have $450 after taxes. In 7 years, after tax interest would come to $3150, less than half of what we have saved during that same period with our solar panels. Of course, with stocks and bonds you very likely have something left at the end of solar panels’ lives.

Bond funds currently earn about the same 3% interest, and of course with stocks you never know what they will earn and also face the danger that they will suffer from a Wall Street crash.

And taking taxes into consideration, the money solar panels save you provides the equivalent of tax-free income, so a $7,250 saving over 7 years would leave as much in your pocket as $9600 in taxable income would have, assuming you are in a 25% marginal tax bracket.

Furthermore, remember that the price of electricity will undoubtedly go up. The savings from having solar panels will therefore also increase, making them an even better investment.

I don’t recommend borrowing to pay for solar panels. But if you are considering this, be sure to subtract the interest you would be paying on the loan from the benefits the panels will produce before you sign anything. It may not pencil out.

Check out your solar installer – most are reputable, but perhaps not all. The installer can tell you how well your local utility treats customers with solar panels, which can vary greatly.

And be ultra cautious about anybody offering to install solar panels for “free.” They will retain a property right in the panels until you pay them off, which could scare off buyers if you need to sell the property.

There truly is no free lunch! But solar panels can be the next best thing.

While UAE Backs Sudan Genocide, NBA Cup Should Drop Emirates Sponsorship

The NBA’s credibility as a league that stands for justice and fairness is at risk. Will they take actions to break off their connection to a government that is funding and arming some of the worst atrocities in the world?

The National Basketball Association, a league renowned for its support of civil rights going back to the Bill Russell era, is now connected to the former member of Sudan’s Parliament Siham Hassan Hasaballah, who organized soup kitchens out of her home after the country’s most recent war began in 2023. Just weeks ago, she was executed in Darfur by a genocidal militia called the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF.

The NBA, a league that actively promoted racial justice in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, is now connected to the Saudi Maternity Hospital in Darfur, where RSF soldiers murdered hundreds of patients and health workers last month. One video shot by RSF soldiers themselves reveals a dozen victims lying on the floor, while an RSF soldier kills an elderly survivor. Tedros Ghebreyesus, the Director of the World Health Organization, was “appalled and deeply shocked by reports of the tragic killing of more than 460 patients and companions” at the hospital.

The NBA, a league undertaking major investments in youth programs in Africa and around the world, is now connected to the world’s fastest displacement crisis taking place now in Sudan, which is the “largest humanitarian crisis ever recorded,” according to the International Rescue Committee.

What’s the connection? The NBA has developed a deep and evolving commercial partnership with the United Arab Emirates, which is providing weapons and support to the RSF, that genocidal Sudanese militia. The most visible and public manifestation of the relationship is the Emirates NBA Cup, the increasingly popular in-season tournament sponsored by the UAE’s flagship airline. The tournament’s final round will take place this coming Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Global business dealings are complex, but surely genocide should be a red line for the NBA.

The NBA also has a deepening partnership with Rwanda, which over the last two years has sent thousands of troops into neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, sponsored one of the deadliest militias in all of Africa—the M23—in support of its Congo intervention, and looted Congo’s valuable natural resources.

The league is now one degree of separation away from the two worst abusers of human rights in all of Africa: the RSF and M23.

“Sportswashing” has a long history. The Roman Empire had its bread and circuses. Hitler hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics, Mussolini hosted the 1934 World Cup, and Putin hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. Saudi Arabia owns the LIV golf league. They all recognized that attention from their own misdeeds could easily be diverted by investing in sporting events that entertain the masses.

To that end, the NBA relationship isn’t the only sportswashing the UAE is engaged in, as the Emirati government and its subsidiary companies are also sponsors of Formula One racing, US Open tennis, Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts events, European soccer teams, and National Football League teams, among others.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s deputy, Mark Tatum, has argued that the NBA follows “directives and guidance” from the US government, and he has told private audiences that if American policy changed, the NBA’s action would change accordingly.

That change is underway. On November 12, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stopped just short of saying the quiet part out loud: “”We know who the parties are that are involved [in arming the RSF]... I can just tell you at the highest levels of our government that case is being made and that pressure is being applied to the relevant parties… This needs to stop.“

At the moment, it remains unlikely that a US official would publicly name the UAE as the largest supplier of weapons to the RSF. But it is clear US policy toward the UAE’s arming of the RSF is shifting. NBA Commissioner Silver has a duty to recognize that change, as his deputy said, and “change accordingly.”

With the crisis in Sudan only getting worse, now is the time to act. The activist campaign Speak Out On Sudan, coordinated by a number of humanitarian and human rights organizations including Refugees International and The Sentry, is calling on the NBA to make it clear to its Emirati partners that as long as the UAE continues to fund and arm the RSF, this will be the last Emirates NBA Cup. The NBA is one of the most powerful sports leagues in the world—surely it can find another sponsor.

There is precedent for this. Recently, partly in response to growing activist pressure, the English Premier soccer club Arsenal announced the end of its commercial partnership with Rwanda, which has invaded neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo and is looting the Congo’s mineral wealth. The German club Bayern Munich did the same earlier this year. These teams have shown brand sensitivity and willingness to change when called out for commercial arrangements that connect them to horrific human rights abuses. The UAE’s support for a genocidal Sudanese militia is no different.

The NBA’s credibility as a league that stands for justice and fairness is at risk. Will they take actions to break off their connection to a government that is funding and arming some of the worst atrocities in the world? Or is “shut up and dribble,” the infamous line used by Fox News host Laura Ingraham to LeBron James, going to be the way forward for the NBA on this issue?

Global business dealings are complex, but surely genocide should be a red line for the NBA. As this year’s Emirates NBA Cup concludes this week, let’s hope it’s the last.
