Former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder visited a Moscow branch of German supermarket chain Globus on Wednesday, days after joining the supervisory board of the company's Russian operations.
Schröder gave a speech to employees before talks continued behind closed doors, Russian business newspaper RBK reported. He then toured the store.
According to RBK, shareholders appointed Schröder on September 30 to the supervisory board of Hyperglobus LLC, which operates the Globus supermarket chain in Russia.
He is expected to take part in the company's overall management and oversee its "strategic development" in Russia, the newspaper reported.
Schröder, 82, a centre-left politician who served as German chancellor between 1998 and 2005, has been a controversial figure for years because of his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his role in Russian energy concerns, including the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project controlled by Russia's Gazprom.
Schröder has also met Putin on several occasions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Putin has even suggested that Schröder could act as a mediator in the war.
