US chipmaker Vishay announces major Germany investment

30.10.2026, 20:24 Uhr

The semiconductor manufacturer Vishay said on Friday that it would invest a "high three-digit million amount" into its production facility in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The company did not state the exact sum. According to Andreas Hein, economic policy spokesman for the Christian Democrats in the state parliament, the amount is around €1 billion ($1.11 billion).

Schleswig-Holstein's economy minister, Claus Ruhe Madsen, handed over a funding approval notice of around €215 million for the site in Itzehoe, 60 kilometres north-west of Hamburg.

The US manufacturer's German subsidiary will produce semiconductor wafers with a diameter of 300 millimetres in an additional factory at the location.

The company said that up to 250 new jobs are expected to be created at the site.

Chips and semiconductor components are manufactured from silicon semiconductor discs known as wafers. Until now, Vishay has been producing conventional 200-millimetre wafers in Itzehoe.

The production of larger wafers offers the advantage that more chips and components can be manufactured per disc.
