The Press Office of the People's Defence Forces (HPG) reported that the Turkish army is intensifying its attacks with banned weapons in the guerrilla-held Medya Defence Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).
In a statement published on Friday on the current state of the war in the Medya Defence Zones, HPG reported 30 Turkish attacks with banned explosives against tunnels in Zap and Metîna between 2 and 5 December. In three other cases, chemicals containing phosphorus were used against the tunnels under the Sere Metina massif. ‘This is another war crime,’ the HPG emphasised.
The HPG also reported 47 air strikes carried out by Turkish fighter jets and helicopters during the same period. According to the statement, these strikes targeted areas in the Gare, Metîna, Xakurke and Zap regions. The guerrilla forces responded to the military violence of the Turkish occupation troops with various actions, primarily on the western front of the Zap region. Among other things, the construction of a new military road to Girê Bahar was interrupted by heavy weapons. In Girê Amêdîyê, snipers from the Free Women's Troops (YJA Star) destroyed both a radar system and a surveillance camera.
In addition, YJA Star guerrillas in Girê Cûdî targeted moving military forces. According to the HPG, guerrillas carried out three consecutive actions the day before against a troop of occupiers approaching the tunnel systems. The attempted advance was stopped by the successful intervention of the YJA Star guerrillas. In Serê Metîna, YJA Star guerrillas destroyed a surveillance camera and damaged a military position that had been set up in the region.
