A child has died of measles in the US state of New York, marking the state's first death from the highly contagious disease in 30 years, Governor Kathy Hochul said.

The child died in Lewis County after contracting measles, Hochul said in a statement on Monday. She described the death as heartbreaking and criticized the US government's approach to vaccination, saying decades of progress in preventing infectious diseases were at risk.

New York health officials urged residents to check their vaccination status, saying the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine offered the best protection.

Hochul declared a state of emergency in early October amid a measles outbreak, particularly in rural areas, to expand the number of health-care professionals authorized to administer vaccines.

The United States had recorded 4,852 confirmed measles cases by the end of October, more than twice the total for all of 2025, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Three deaths had been reported by that date.

US Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, appointed by President Donald Trump, has faced criticism over his repeated questioning of the benefits of vaccination amid the rising number of infections.
